  • Oversees Chamber s operations and programs. Works with the Board, staff, and volunteers to anticipate and address community needs. Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs. Spearheads the development, communication and implementation of effective strategies and processes.
  • The Executive Director directs staff and volunteers to carry out initiatives, assignments and programs under the approved strategic plan and annual budget.

Requirements
  • Bachelor s degree in marketing, planning or business or public administration or related field.
  • 2+ years of business management experience.
  • CAE, CCE, IOM or other management certification desired.

  • Chamber spokesperson able to utilize excellent written and oral communication skills through traditional media and social media.
  • Serve as an effective lobbyist for the business community with the local, regional, state and national elected officials.

Executive Director - Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce - Salem, VA


SUMMARY:
The Executive Director is the Chamber’s operations leader and strategic implementer for the organization, working to create, promote, develop and support quality business opportunities in the Salem-Roanoke County community. This role serves to promote retention and expansion of members by demonstrating membership value. Reporting directly to the President, and more generally to the Executive Board of Directors, the Executive Director manages and directs all operations, programs and activities of the Chamber. Key aspects of the role are as follows:
Membership Sustainment
  • Meet membership retention and growth goals as outlined in the S-RCC budget and strategic plan.
  • Work with the First Vice President, Membership Retention Committee and Ambassador team to implement the Chamber’s strategy for member retention. Monitor objectives and expectations for staff and Ambassadors.
  • Work with the Membership Value Programming Committee to create membership programming that supports and delivers the mission and its value to members. Membership programming includes the Chamber’s annual meeting, business showcase, and networking events.
  • Welcome all new members personally; oversee the onboarding of all members.
Operations/Management
  • Provide regular strategic activity report to Chamber Officers.
  • Support effective governance practices. Prepare and distribute meeting documents (including meeting minutes) for Executive Board and Board of Director meetings.
  • Work with Treasurer and provider of accounting services to deliver accurate timely financial, budget, and strategic information to board and other stakeholders
  • Manage and coach the efforts of a part time administrator. This role manages purchasing, record keeping, and member records.
  • Collaborate with various Chamber committees as required throughout the year.
  • Manage annual funding requests from City of Salem and Roanoke County.
  • Complete and file annual reporting to State Corporation Commission.
  • Serve as S-RCC representative to community organizations such as the Roanoke Regional Partnership, Downtown Salem Advisory Committee, Destination Visioning Committee, Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives, and Roanoke Regional Coalition.


Jim Cleveland
The Envision Greater Fond du Lac Board of Directors have named Jim Cleveland as the organization’s Interim President and CEO, beginning December 5.
Cleveland currently serves as Envision Greater Fond du Lac’s director of outreach and client services and will assume interim duties following the departure of the organization’s current president and CEO, Cecilia Harry. Recruitment efforts are underway for the organization’s next leader.
“This is an important next step in our transition plan,” stated Paul Reetz, board of directors chairman and owner of Integrity Saw and Tool. “We have great confidence in Jim’s ability to serve in this capacity while providing leadership to the staff and our business community during this time.”
Cleveland is a long-time local resident. Having served both the Association of Commerce and the Fond du Lac County Economic Development Corporation over the past decade, Cleveland brings leadership, a steady presence and knowledge of both chamber programming and fundamentals of economic development. He has been involved with the individual and combined organizations for more than 12 years. His earlier work includes 15 years in banking.

The Executive Director will plan, organize and oversee a range of services and events for members, including but not limited to maintaining the chamber website that features local business news and a membership directory that is available to the public and potential new customers and clients. In addition, the Executive Director shall work to create strategic ties within the community that lead to key partnerships between educators and employers so that schools can align their curriculum with the skills needed by the local labor market.
Qualified candidates should possess the following skills:
 Exhibit excellent financial management, government relations, fundraising, relationship management and marketing skills as well as a demonstrated knowledge of the nonprofit sector.
 3 to 5 years’ experience in chamber, association or government affairs work.
 This position requires a hands-on approach and candidates must be willing to assume a wide variety of responsibilities from Chamber management to fund development and marketing to administrative tasks.
 Candidates must be self-starters with a strong work ethic.
 Successful candidates will also demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the Chamber's mission.
 Excellent computer, written and verbal communication skills are critical.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Executive Director, under authority granted by the Board of Directors, is the chief executive of the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce. AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Board of Directors is seeking a dynamic leader for its well-established Chamber of Commerce organization of over three hundred members. The candidate should expect to actively recognize new opportunities, continually improve existing activities, energetically organize and execute new projects, and bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the position, all in service to membership, local businesses, and the community at large.
Marketing & Growth:
  • Maintain a high profile in the business community.
  • Target all non-member businesses for recruitment.
  • Work with Member Services Committee and staff in the creation of innovative marketing and growth programs to expand membership
Program Development and Accomplishment:
  • Work with Board of Directors and members to develop an annual Strategic Plan and project list reflecting the organization’s purpose and membership needs for each fiscal year.
  • Establish, maintain, and evaluate long-range objectives and strategies for meeting said objectives.
  • Develop and coordinate the necessary leadership and volunteers to accomplish the Strategic Plan.
Finance:
  • Evaluate and advise the Board of Directors as to financial needs for each fiscal year and beyond.
  • Prepare an annual budget in conjunction with the Board’s Executive Committee, for submission to the full Board of Directors for approval.
  • Manage the Chamber staff and its efforts within the approved budget and other applicable guidelines.
  • Develop applicable plans for meeting the budget.
  • Provide monthly information and data to the Board regarding expenses and revenues relative to the budget.
Staff:
  • Establish and maintain a staff consistent with program needs and financial guidelines. Responsibilities include recruiting, hiring and dismissal, as well as maintaining accountability among the staff relative to their assignments and applicable policy.
  • Establish basic work functions and standards of performance for each member of the staff.
  • Evaluate staff performance on an annual basis to assure satisfactory accomplishment of Chamber’s objectives.
  • Maintain a working climate that attracts, maintains, and motivates high quality staff.
Relationship with Board of Directors:
  • Attend and provide participative consultation at all Board and Board committee meetings.
  • Prepare agendas for Board meetings, with the assistance of the Board Chair.
  • Provide the Board with adequate information to help it reach sound decisions and establish policies.
  • Initiate and recommend polices to the Board as required for the efficient, effective operation of the organization.
  • Report regularly to the Board concerning progress toward organizational objectives, financial status and other issues of concern to the organization.
  • Provide or facilitate orientation and training for Board members.
Committees:
  • Assist committee chairs in the orderly arrangement of meetings, including preparation of agendas and the dissemination of materials.
  • Maintain contact with all committees and be aware of the current status of all Chamber projects in relation to the original objective, the current position, and the work yet to be done.
Advisory:
  • Stay apprised of governmental initiatives affecting Chamber members and initiatives.
  • Recommend, when necessary or appropriate, changes in policy.
Member and Public Relations:
  • Maintain close contact with city, state and federal officials on those matters associated with organization, community and economic development.
  • Direct, prepare and disseminate all communications to the membership and the general public.
  • Represent the Chamber at various meetings, functions and events, acting as a key representative of the business community.
  • Maintain close liaisons with community, civic, trade associations, and service organizations that may affect or enrich member interests.
  • Make public addresses or secure other appropriate speakers concerning the Chamber and community activities and issues.
  • Promote good public relations in the community and among the membership.
Government Relations:
  • Serve as a key economic development resource for member organizations and prospective businesses in the community, coordinating as necessary with appropriate city staff and other civic organizations.
  • Partner with the City of Ottawa’s Economic Development department and regional Economic Development Corporation, as directed, to bring businesses into the community.
Membership Maintenance:
  • Oversee the direction of all membership efforts and develop retention plan.
  • Coordinate new member development and oversee the orientation program.
  • Direct proper membership record keeping procedures.
  • Recommend necessary changes in the membership dues investment schedule.
  • Develop and maintain relations with major employers/members.
  • Develop new member benefits.
General Administrative:
  • Conduct the official correspondence of the Chamber and maintain records of the same.
  • Preserve all legal and historical documents relating to the Chamber’s activities, programs, property and positions.
  • Meet all necessary legal and financial reporting requirements.
  • Approve and sign checks on all Board approved budget expenditures.
  • Direct office maintenance including replacement of equipment and purchase of additional equipment.
  • Manage the property lease and any applicable administration.
  • Be generally familiar with the community and its activities and develop knowledge of all other organizations in the community, their programs and their leadership.
  • Keep alert for community concerns and opportunities and bring them to the attention of the appropriate agency, group or individual.
  • Serve as chief editor of all organizational publications.
  • Maintain current policy and procedure manual(s).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
Qualifications:
  • Previous association management experience in a closely related field preferred.
  • College degree from an accredited institution, or comparable educational and work experience.
  • Current or planned residence in or near Ottawa is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop mutually productive working relations with other organizations, consumers, public officials, and funding sources.
  • Demonstrated record of success in a leadership capacity, including ability to organize and plan effectively.
  • Physical capability of carrying out the duties of the position, and an automobile available for business use.
