R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Find out what it means to Muskegon chamber's new chair

The theme at the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce for next two years is RESPECT.
The acronym stands for "Relationships. Education. Service. Play. Environment. Commerce. Tradition." It's the brainchild of Lee Coggin, new chamber board chair and president of Baker College of Muskegon.
"I wanted to dovetail on the Watch Muskegon campaign, and make sure we understand the diversity of businesses and people in the area," he said. "The RESPECT campaign reflected that perfectly."
The theme also will encourage members and the community to engage in tough conversations without being adversarial, Coggin said. The chamber will encourage people to come together and find common ground.
"It reflects concern about not our community, but about some of the activities we've witnessed on a national level," said Cindy Larsen, chamber president. "Every time you see a protest that involves a fight, that means people are not being respectful of other's opinions."
The hope is that in the small community of Muskegon and surrounding areas, people are able to disagree respectfully, she added.  Read more: M LIVE

Chamber Executive Ongoing Education: If you read one book this spring, make it this: Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less

Have you ever found yourself stretched too thin?
Do you sometimes feel overworked and underutilized?
Do you feel motion sickness instead of momentum?
Does your day sometimes get hijacked by someone else’s agenda?
Have you ever said “yes” simply to please and then resented it?
If you answered yes to any of these, the way out is the Way of the Essentialist.
The Way of the Essentialist involves doing less, but better, so you can make the highest possible contribution.
The Way of the Essentialist isn’t about getting more done in less time. It’s not about getting less done. It’s about getting only the right things done. It’s about challenging the core assumption of ‘we can have it all’ and ‘I have to do everything’ and replacing it with the pursuit of ‘the right thing, in the right way, at the right time’. It’s about regaining control of our own choices about where to spend our time and energies instead of giving others implicit permission to choose for us.
In Essentialism, Greg McKeown draws on experience and insight from working with the leaders of the most innovative companies in the world to show how to achieve the disciplined pursuit of less.
By applying a more selective criteria for what is essential, the pursuit of less allows us to regain control of our own choices so we can channel our time, energy and effort into making the highest possible contribution toward the goals and activities that matter.
Essentialism isn’t one more thing; it is a different way of doing everything. It is a discipline you apply constantly, effortlessly. Essentialism is a mindset; a way of life. It is an idea whose time has come. More information: Your local bookseller.

Tim Daman: Continued strength of Greater Lansing’s business climate a priority

Our region has made great progress in becoming a competitive and attractive place for businesses to invest and grow jobs. Even more, our region has succeeded in diversifying its economic foundation.

The region’s transformation, while still evolving, has been no accident.

It was carefully planned by thoughtful business, community and elected leaders throughout who have worked closely to energize the local economy and set its future course.

This year’s City of Lansing elections matter because maintaining and building on this energy will require electing leaders who not only recognize the importance of Lansing’s financial health, but share the vision of the city as an anchor for the entire region’s economic strength.

The city of Lansing faces serious threats to its fiscal future as the result of retiree pension and health care obligations. This $600 million liability will be a top priority facing the new administration and council. It is one that the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce is watching closely.

Mayor Hollister and the Lansing Board of Water of Light many years ago had the foresight to address lead service lines to residents and businesses throughout the city. Mayor Bernero saw this visionary effort through to completion, making Lansing one of two cities in the country to have a lead-free water infrastructure. The leaders we elect this fall should follow this lead, and turn their attention to other infrastructure needs with a visionary approach to roads, sidewalks and additional assets that will serve residents and enhance business investment, growth and talent attraction for many years to come. Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its fifth-annual “State of the Area Address” Thursday morning at Three Rivers Community Center.

Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its fifth-annual “State of the Area Address” Thursday morning at Three Rivers Community Center.
Among presenters were Three Rivers city manager Joe Bippus, St. Joseph County H.R. director Teresa Doehring, Constantine village manager Mark Honeysett and Mendon village manager John Hyden.
Bippus spoke about the times leading up to the present in Three Rivers. He spoke of the late 1990s, when a new Three Rivers High School was built.
“It was really a sense of pride for our community,” he said. “It really gave us a sense of excellence.“
Projects and improvements followed in the early-to mid-2000s, including revamping the petting zoo, installing new playground equipment, construction of the east city parking lot, river walk trails and a new farmer’s market.
“We were on a roll,” Bippus said. “Then the recession hit and everything kind of came to a grinding halt ... I don’t think we’ve totally recovered from that, by any stretch.“
But, Bippus said, in the past couple of years, people in the community have started having some big ideas. The city had been saving money and had gotten some grants. The county had a delinquent tax fund.
“The board at that time was looking to try to make some improvements to the area,” he said. “In my mind, it was trying to draw the area back up to when we had that excellence.“
Bippus spoke of “big ideas” including the sports complex, trails to Meyer Broadway Park and elsewhere, the possibility of moving the library, and maintaining the housing stock.
“We want to be a community of choice,” he said.
Doehring highlighted a few St. Joseph County projects. A big one, she said, is parks.
“The last few years, we’ve seen significant activity within the parks department,” she said. “They’ve expanded and developed our park system into a showplace really for the entire state. It rivals the best in Michigan.“ Read more: Sturgis Journal

CEO Blog: Building the Future: Flint & Genesee Chamber: Tim Herman

I want to thank the nearly 400 business and community leaders who attended our recent Annual Meeting and helped celebrate the progress made in 2016 by the region and the Flint & Genesee Chamber.
Our theme for the meeting was “2020: Building the Future”. It reflects a clear vision of what can be accomplished leading up to the year 2020. And, that the region is comprised of forward thinkers and doers who are working to make our vision a reality.
During the meeting, I shared some of the improvements the region made last year on key economic indicators, such as improved earnings, employment, unemployment rate and housing. I also shared that despite the challenges we faced last year – and still face – the private sector continued to invest and create jobs – yielding over $503 million in business investment and government contract value. And tourism activity generated over $131 million in economic impact. This is evidence that we have great momentum, and we have every intention of keeping it going.
I also shared other progress that we envision will occur between now and the year 2020. First, let’s imagine a convergence of advanced manufacturing with health care, technology, life sciences and higher education, along with improved quality of life. With this type of collaboration in place, now envision:
  • 5,000 underemployed workers moving up the earnings ladder.
  • More and better jobs through the growth of export products and services.
  • 1,000 teens being hired by private sector and nonprofit employers.
  • Becoming ground zero for autonomous vehicle production through Kettering’s GM Mobility Research Center – putting Flint at the forefront of the development of next generation technology.
  • More craft businesses, such as welding, woodworkers, makers, organic foods and breweries.
  • The Flint water infrastructure has been addressed.
  • Two new, full-service grocery stores in north Flint.
  • New, mixed income modern housing.
  • Increased bike rental locations throughout local parks.
  • Additional hotels to provide more space for meetings and events, and enrich visitors’ experiences.
  • The Flint River sheds its notoriety and becomes a community asset again — increasing the quality of life for residents and non-residents alike.
  • The University Avenue Corridor plan is fully realized, anchored by two universities and new businesses.  Read more: Building the Future
