Chamber event: Taste of Ocean
Springs tickets on sale now, will go fast
The event is under the oaks at the L&N Depot at the entrance
to downtown — the Taste of Ocean Springs Food & Wine Festival.
More than 20 restaurants bring their creations for sampling.
People get dressed up for this, even though it’s outdoors.
Tickets just went on sale and are going fast, as always — $50 at
the Chamber of Commerce office, 1000 Washington Avenue (in the Depot) or with Chamber board
members, while supplies last.
Only 500 will be sold. The festival will be 6 to 8:30 p.m. May 11.
What you get is a chance to try it all: The best of what Ocean
Springs restaurants — the Coast’s dining Mecca — have to offer.
Mayor Connie Moran said she went back to the
Vestige table seven times last year for the shrimp in
butter sauce. It won the People’s Choice Award.
Attire ranges from business casual to dressy.
“It’s not formal,” said Chamber Executive Director Cynthia Dobbs
Sutton, but it’s dressy for Ocean Springs. “We partner with our local retail
shops and ask them to decorate their windows with clothing in black, white and
red so as people buy their tickets, they see the options of where they can buy
their outfit for the event.”
Black, white and red are the colors the Chamber came up with when
it started the festival nine years ago. Read more: Sun Herald
Downtown Brookhaven
in the running for “America’s Main Street”
Brookhaven
pride is special. And could be prize-winning.
The
city is one of 25 quarterfinalists nationwide vying for the title of America’s
best Main Street. It’s an online poll and Brookhaven needs votes to win the
contest.
“I
think Brookhaven made it to the top 25 because we have a community that is so
proud of itself and its accomplishments — proud of its downtown, proud of its
retail corridor and its quality of life — that they want to show it off to the
rest of the country and the rest of the world,” said Garrick Combs, executive
director of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce. “There’s a pride
that’s special.
That
mindset may have been a key factor in Brookhaven making it this far in the
“America’s Main Streets” contest, sponsored by Independent We Stand, a national
small business movement.
The
contest invites the public to vote online for their favorite main street area.
Visit mainstreetcontest.com and click on Brookhaven’s profile to vote. Votes
are allowed once every 24 hours.
Brookhaven
is the only Mississippi city in the contest and one of only a few from southern
states.
The
Home Seekers Paradise has seen growth in its historic downtown area, with new
businesses setting up shop and more buildings being restored. Lots of downtown
events also bring new awareness and economic impact to the area.
“There
has been an incredible outpouring of love for hundreds of main streets and main
street organizations across the country in this year’s ‘America’s Main Streets’
contest and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Independent We Stand co-founder
Bill Brunelle. “We are in our second year of the contest and are so happy to
see the passion and pride these nominees have for their main streets and the
local businesses that keep them alive.”
More
than 156,000 votes were cast for 242 nationwide nominees during the nominations
phase of the contest, and the field has been narrowed to 25
quarterfinalists. Daily Leader
Oxford-Lafayette
County Chamber Local Landscaping Camp to feature butterfly gardening

Spring
fever is definitely contagious this time of year as one yearns to plant flowers
and add color to their landscape. Even more comforting is watching butterflies
dance around your flowers adding a sense of ease and comfort to a hectic day.
Carson
Ellis, horticulturist for the Memphis Botanic Garden will be sharing her
knowledge, tips and ideas on how to make your garden enjoyable for you and
butterflies at the upcoming Landscaping Camp to be held on May
26-28 at The Inn at Ole Miss hosted by the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber
of Commerce and Economic Development Foundation Retirement Attraction Program.
Ellis,
who manages two gardens at the Memphis Botanic Garden, the Anne Heard Stokes
Butterfly Garden and Delta Heritage Garden, is passionate about environmental
sustainability and the conservation and promotion of native plant species and
communities, and practices these values in her gardens. She is currently
serving on the steering committee for the newly-formed Tennessee Plant
Conservation Alliance and is hoping to develop the Delta Heritage Garden into a
demonstration site for small-scale sustainable agriculture while continuing the
expansion and development of naturalized plantings for the Anne Heard Stokes
Butterfly Garden.
Before
moving to Memphis in 2015, she interned at both the Asheville Arboretum and
Highlands Biological Research Station in North Carolina and has an associate’s
degree in Horticulture Technology from Haywood Community College, as well as a
bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Mount Holyoke College.
“I
enjoy working in the butterfly garden because I have a lot of creative freedom,
independence to research and design the plantings, and a strong sense of
connection to the space,” she said. “The work as a horticulturist is not always
glamorous, but having the support to bring my ideas and vision to fruition has made
it a rewarding venture. I am also excited to announce that, in 2016, we were
officially certified as a Monarch Waystation.”
Among
other speakers planned during the camp will be Jeff McManus, whose expertise in
landscaping has gained the University of Mississippi accolades of being named
“The Most Beautiful Campus” by a number of national publications as well in
Newsweek 2011 and just recently in USA Today’s Readers Choice competition. A
personal tour is scheduled on the first day of the camp with McManus as he
shares his knowledge and secrets, followed by an Opening Dinner/Book Signing
where each participant will receive two books he has written.
Educational
seminars that will also take place include, “How to Prune Your Shrubs,” with
Jeff McManus; “Creating a Bird-Friendly Landscape,” with Mitch Robinson from
the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center; and “Talking Turf” with David Jumper with
the UM Golf Course as well as receive time-saving tips for a low maintenance
yard. In addition, Donna Yowell, executive director, Mississippi Urban Forest
Council will speak on “Cut Flower” gardening so one can snip to their heart’s
content. Read more: Oxford Eagle
ADP news: Regions Bank Announces
Major Plans for Hattiesburg Operations
REGIONS BANK today announced plans to build a 75,000
square-foot operations facility near the intersection of Lamar Boulevard and
Lincoln Road in Hattiesburg.
The high-tech facility will be designed to accommodate Regions
associates who currently work across various business groups at Regions’ Kress,
Front Street and Forrest Tower facilities in downtown Hattiesburg. Further,
Regions plans to create approximately 90 additional jobs to support company
operations.
Regions currently employs more than 320 people in the Hattiesburg
area. With the addition of new jobs, the company’s operations facility is
expected to house approximately 420 associates after completion. The facility
represents an expected capital investment of $23 million by Regions. The design
of the operations center will also allow for potential expansion in the future.
“Hattiesburg and the Pine Belt Region have celebrated significant
economic development wins in recent years. Regions’ investment in this new
facility and commitment to adding 90 new jobs, bringing the company’s total
employment in the city to more than 400, will benefit the local community for
many years to come,” Gov. Phil Bryant said.
“It is no surprise that Regions has chosen the City of Hattiesburg
as the location of its new mortgage operations facility,” added U.S. Rep.
Steven Palazzo of South Mississippi’s 4th Congressional District. “I commend
the Area Development Partnership (ADP), Regions and the City of Hattiesburg for
the hard work they have put forth to ensure this expansion. I look forward to
the continued success of Regions in the Pine Belt and the company’s ongoing
commitment to Lamar County, Forrest County and the City of Hattiesburg.”
Construction of the operations facility is expected to begin as
soon as the fourth quarter of 2017.
“Regions Bank is committed to Hattiesburg, the Pine Belt and the
state of Mississippi,” added Greg Garraway, South Mississippi President for
Regions Bank. “People who work for Regions in Hattiesburg are dedicated to
serving customers here at home and across the country. When it came time to
grow and expand our operations, we knew we wanted to do so here in this community.”
“We are extremely pleased that Regions has such confidence in our
community and in the quality of our workforce,” said Evan Dillard, Chairman of
the Area Development Partnership. “The company’s selection of Hattiesburg is a
testament to the pro-business operating environment found here.”

Columbus-Lowndes
Chamber hosts education awards
Cheyanne
Allred was shocked to hear her name called.
Allred, a
senior at New Hope High School, was named the overall outstanding senior and
recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Golden Triangle Development LINK at
the Columbus-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce's Education Awards Program. The
program, held Thursday afternoon at the Lion Hills Center, recognized students
and teachers from public and private schools throughout Lowndes County.
Thirty
students representing eight high schools in the county, including Allred as the
12th grade representative for New Hope High School, received recognition for
high GPAs. Fifteen students each received $500 scholarships from corporate
sponsors, and the Chamber recognized one outstanding senior from each
school.
Allred,
speaking to The Dispatch, said she was surprised to receive the award, given
the caliber of students represented at Thursday's program.
"It's
really such an honor because so many of these kids that were selected as
outstanding seniors from other schools are so prestigious and they've done so
much," she said.
Allred, who is
planning to attend Mississippi State University, is active in and out of school
in everything from the rocketry club and cheerleading to teaching Sunday school
at Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
She said she's
always tried to be involved in her school and community, though it can be
tough. The most important part, Allred said, is finding a way to stay balanced.

EMBDC Home and garden show connects community, services
A constant flow of
home and garden enthusiasts filled Tommy Dulaney Building Thursday for the
premiere EMBDC Home & Garden Show.
“We are very pleased
with the turnout, which we estimate to be about 1,500 attendees,” said Debbie
Delshad, membership director of the East Mississippi Business Development
Corporation.
The event provided a
showcase of what’s available locally to help residents with their home
improvement projects, as well as opportunities for them to purchase products to
complete them.
Representatives of
several local businesses were on hand at booths set up throughout the building
to share information about their services, as well as provide sample items.
“The vendors really
went all out in decorating their booths, which really showed their enthusiasm
for this event,” Delshad said.
And while the home and
garden show was to benefit attendees, vendors also were rewarded from the day’s
activities.
“Our store was closed
for five years before we reopened a year ago, so this was the perfect way to
let the community know we’re back in business,” said B.J. Hatten, a sales
representative for The Hutlett in downtown Meridian. “This is also an
opportunity to show our support for the community through our participation in
this event.”
Anna Grace Tanner,
communications manager for Mitchell Companies, said the Home & Garden Show
was not only an opportunity to meet the public, but also to provide them
another perspective of their company. Besides being a beverage distributor, it
also provides several other services. Read more: Meridian Star

Double Decker Arts Festival in
Oxford – Big time fun for everyone
Under a
large oak tree on the south side of the Lafayette County Courthouse Saturday
morning, Oxford resident David “Bodie” Bodenheimer beat the crowds found the
perfect spot to set up chairs for him, his family and friends to enjoy the
Double Decker Arts Festival.
“I got
here about 8:45 a.m.,” he said. “We’ve been doing this for 20 years. This is a
great spot. The ladies can shop and us men can eat and people watch.”
The
festival kicked off with the annual Double Decker Spring Run where more than
1,500 participants ran in a 5K, 10K and Kid’s Fun Run under partly sunny skies
and hefty breezes.
Daniel
Caddigan, 23, of Columbus won first place for the overall best time in the 10K
race, finishing in 35:40 minutes. Meggan Franks, 33, of Starkville took the
first place award for females in the 10K race with a time of 38:27. A complete
list of winners can be found at www.racesonline.com.
“We were
so thrilled to have such a great turnout for the races,” said race chairwoman
Pam Swain, with the Oxford & Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce. “The
weather was perfect and our runners we’re ready to run.”
Swain
said the new course this year — due to construction on the University of
Mississippi campus — was a challenge for some of the runners.
“Our
local community always shows such wonderful support by cheering one another on
and supporting the race,” she said. “It’s great to see families come together
to run and start their Double Decker weekend off in such a fun, healthy way.”

MEC bids farewell to Wilson,
welcomes Yates
Mississippi business leaders on Thursday bid farewell to longtime
Mississippi Economic Council President Blake Wilson, welcomed William Yates III
as incoming MEC chairman and were entertained by acclaimed singer-songwriter
Mac McAnally who grew up in Belmont.
MEC's 68th annual meeting at the Jackson Convention Complex drew
about 2,000 business leaders from across the state. In conjunction with the
annual meeting, MEC honored more than 280 Student Teacher Achievement
Recognition scholarship winners.
The event included a special program and video thanking Wilson for
his 19 years of service with the state's chamber of commerce, and as
Mississippi's "head cheerleader." Under Wilson's watch, MEC has
nearly tripled its company membership to 1,100 and the number of people has grown
nearly ten-fold to 10,000, making MEC a more powerful voice in state policy and
economic development. Wilson helped usher in Mississippi's automotive
manufacturing industry and a sea change as Mississippi industry has shifted
from old-line manufacturing to more advanced and high tech.
Wilson in February announced his retirement in February and
Thursday's annual meeting was his last big MEC event. MEC Vice President and
COO Scott Waller has been named interim president effective May 1.
Wilson, a Delaware native, repeated an oft-told joke on Thursday:
"I'm not originally from Mississippi but I got here as fast as I
could" and said he plans to stay after retirement. Read more: The Clarion-Ledger
Wesson Chamber celebrates history on Founders’ Day
The Wesson Chamber of
Commerce is combining its Founders’ Day celebration on April 28-29 with
Mississippi’s Bicentennial party.
The theme is, “Wesson Founders’
Day — A Celebration of State, County and Town History.” Wesson residents will
celebrate Mississippi’s history through a variety of events catered to young
children, farmers and producers.
“Growing up in Wesson, I
thought I pretty much knew a lot of its history. I have learned new
things and I hope those who attend the celebration will take away some new
knowledge of Mississippi and Wesson,” said Chamber board member Deemie
Letchworth. “Putting together a weekend to celebrate the state’s 200th birthday
along with celebrating Wesson’s history has been a huge learning experience for
me.”
Starting Monday, store
windows in downtown Wesson will host various historical items to showcase
Mississippi and its local artists. Copiah-Lincoln Community College’s Evelyn W.
Oswalt Library will also host artwork and handmade quilts from local artists.
Students from Wesson
Attendance Center, like Nicky Cone’s fourth grade elementary class, will also
be participating in the celebration. They will be making steamboats to present
to the Chamber. Read more: Daily Leader
