Retiring city clerk to lead Geneva's Swedish Days parade

Retiring city clerk Lynn Landberg Monday was named marshal of the Geneva Swedish Days parade.

"I'm really honored to be in the company of so many great Genevans who have served as honorary parade marshals in the past," Landberg said in a news release from the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and the Viking Service Organization.

Landberg, a fourth-generation Genevan, graduated from Geneva High School in 1962. He attended the University of Illinois and returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Vicky.
He retired in 2003 from Reed Business Information where he was editor of Construction Equipment magazine.
"This is home, the only one I've known, and I've always given Geneva my full support, and wanted to do what I could in making it the great community it is," Landberg said.
He was appointed to the city's economic development committee in the 1970s and worked on formation of the city's first tax-increment financing district. He served on the plan commission from 1979 to 1985.
His father, former city clerk Harold Landberg, got him to run for clerk in 1985. He served 1985 to 1993, and from 2005 until now. He decided not to seek re-election and his last day on the job is Monday.
Landberg has volunteered for the Geneva History Museum for 12 years, working the front desk, assisting with mailings, and telling stories of growing up in Geneva. Read more: Daily Herald

Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce announces award winners

Two outstanding people in our area were recognized for their hard work and dedication to their careers by the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce.

Vicki Hawkins Fitch, Executive Director of the Bowling Green Area Convention and Visitors Bureau was named the ATHENA Award Recipient, and David Sears, the President and co-owner of Kentucky Outdoor Advertising was given the honor of being the 2017 Small Business Person of the Year.

"When I look back at the things that he did to keep his family going forward, it was really just being a little, small business person, and so I guess that's something that is sort of in my heart that I won't ever forget," said Sears, who couldn't help but feel that his father deserved a piece of his award.

Hawkins was equally reflective, recalling each of the previous ATHENA Award winners.

"It took my breath away. It's very humbling to be among the past recipients because those are such dynamic women that I have admired for so many years."

Both Fitch and Sears are set to be honored at the Chamber's Excellence Awards Luncheon on May 18. For a complete list of award nominees, see below: Read more: WBKO

The Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes visitors to enjoy a true Wisconsin classic at the 16th annual Cheese Curd Festival

The Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes visitors to enjoy a true Wisconsin classic at the 16th annual Cheese Curd Festival with help from a $25,900 Joint Effort Marketing (JEM) Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism.

Taking place in the "Cheese Curd Capital of Wisconsin," the festival honors the popularity of Wisconsin cheese, with a focus on the cheese curd. Attendees can enjoy deep fried curds and signature dipping sauces, cheese curd-influenced cuisine, a cheese curd eating contest and more. The festival is set to take place June 23-24.

"This project clearly demonstrates that funding tourism marketing initiatives produces a sound return on investment for the local economy," Gov. Scott Walker said. "Tourism is part of Wisconsin's economic foundation and its continued growth is a priority for my administration because of the nearly 191,000 jobs it supports, the tax revenues it generates and the positive image it projects for the State."

In addition to cheese curds, the Cheese Curd Festival will also feature regional craft beer, hard cider, wine and street-food specialties. Over the span of two days, fest-goers will be able to enjoy musical performances, participate in a 5K and 10K run and take part in a classic car cruise-in and show. The Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce aims to double the number of festival attendees from 1,500 to 3,000 with help from JEM grant funds. The event is expected to generate an estimated $134,000 in visitor spending in the area.

"For nearly two decades, the Cheese Curd Festival has celebrated the area's important role in the state's cheesemaking history and built on its brand as 'Cheese Curd Capital of Wisconsin'," said Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett. "This event gives visitors an opportunity to experience Ellsworth and our agricultural heritage while creating a positive economic impact." Read more: Pierce County Herald

MEC bids farewell to Wilson, welcomes Yates

Mississippi business leaders on Thursday bid farewell to longtime Mississippi Economic Council President Blake Wilson, welcomed William Yates III as incoming MEC chairman and were entertained by acclaimed singer-songwriter Mac McAnally who grew up in Belmont.

MEC's 68th annual meeting at the Jackson Convention Complex drew about 2,000 business leaders from across the state. In conjunction with the annual meeting, MEC honored more than 280 Student Teacher Achievement Recognition scholarship winners.

The event included a special program and video thanking Wilson for his 19 years of service with the state's chamber of commerce, and as Mississippi's "head cheerleader." Under Wilson's watch, MEC has nearly tripled its company membership to 1,100 and the number of people has grown nearly ten-fold to 10,000, making MEC a more powerful voice in state policy and economic development. Wilson helped usher in Mississippi's automotive manufacturing industry and a sea change as Mississippi industry has shifted from old-line manufacturing to more advanced and high tech.

Wilson in February announced his retirement in February and Thursday's annual meeting was his last big MEC event. MEC Vice President and COO Scott Waller has been named interim president effective May 1.

Wilson, a Delaware native, repeated an oft-told joke on Thursday: "I'm not originally from Mississippi but I got here as fast as I could" and said he plans to stay after retirement. Read more: The Clarion-Ledger

The 14th Annual Portage Community and Business Night was held at Woodland Park in Portage this Thursday night to bring together organizations, nonprofits, and local businesses for a night of networking, community connections, and prizes.
