Happy Monday, Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT week!

Hobart Chamber, and Crossroads Chamber Celebrate New Island Renovations

Zao Island has served as the home of fun in Northwest Indiana for years. Whether it’s hosting a company picnic or a birthday party, Zao Island has played an instrumental role in the lives of many citizens in the region. On the evening of Monday, July 26, the staff of Zao Island teamed up with the Crossroads Chamber of Commerce and the Hobart Chamber of Commerce in celebration of their new renovations. A brief networking session was followed by a ribbon cutting.
Debbie Ogden, Director of Sales & Events at Zao Island, said, “Today we are thrilled that the Crossroads Chamber and the Hobart Chamber have come together to celebrate the opening of the new and improved Zao Island! We’ve extended an open invitation to all Chamber members to visit our facility and network with other members, as well.”
Zao Island is celebrating its 27th year in providing fun for family members of all ages. Voted #1 in Northwest Indiana Entertainment and awarded Best Pizza in Porter County by Valparaiso University, Zao Island has become a household name. Its attractions include two mini golf courses, laser tag, Go-Karts, Colada's Restaurant, the game room, live alligators, batting cages, a giant slide, and lastly, a bounce house.
Owner Ryan Wright said, “There have been so many developments with Zao, so Debbie came up with the idea to showcase our new changes! This event is great because it’s wonderful to see everybody get together and gives us a chance to show off the new place to those who hasn’t seen it. We also get the opportunity to work with the chambers more.”Chambers of Commerce throughout the region often partner up in celebration of the success of organizations. After talking to several members, it was evident that their main goal is to make for a stronger Northwest Indiana community. The chambers work both independently and collectively to encourage the business community to work together. Both the Crossroads and Hobart Chambers serve as an inclusive entity in their communities.
Hobart Chamber Executive Director Lisa Winstead said, “The Hobart Chamber takes a regional approach. It’s important from us to support other chambers within Northwest Indiana. It benefits the whole community. The event today celebrates the successes of Zao Island, and we’re proud to be here in support of them.”

Often times, these chambers do not represent one town or area exclusively. A great example of this is the Crossroads Regional Chamber of Commerce. In 2009, the idea of merging the Greater Crown Point Chamber of Commerce and Merrillville Chamber of Commerce arose. In 2010, this idea became a reality. By merging the two chambers together, it became more inclusive and had the ability to connect more people. Not only was this a great asset for networking, but it became a power-house chamber. Seabees help repair century-old Ocean Springs depot

A century old building in Ocean Springs is getting some updates with help from military personnel.
The city’s historic train depot houses the Chamber of Commerce and a gift shop.
But the building has damage from rot and decay. WLOX-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2aelBB2 ) the city is working to fix the building up with the help of Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 27.
The Seabees are building a new wheelchair ramp and replacing rotted boards all around the building.
Lt. Matt Catanese says the volunteer work enhances the relationship between the city and the local Seabee base.
“We’re not just stationed here. Our families live here as well. We’re part of the Harrison, Hancock, or Jackson County areas. So, we like to get out and let them know that we’re not just here because we have to be, because the government says so. It’s because we like to be a part of the Mississippi Gulf Coast as well and do our part,” said Catanese.
Cynthia Sutton, executive director of the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce, said the project is a way to bring the community together while making much needed repairs to an important city fixture.
“We are definitely delighted to have the Seabees here. It just is a great partnership and it shows community involvement. Without them we probably couldn’t do as much as we’d like to do,” said Sutton. Read more: Washington Times

#BestChamber practices: Sheboygan Chamber: Someplace Better Tour returns

The Someplace Better Tour for HR Professionals, Recruiters and Realtors will return Aug. 16-17.

Sponsored by the Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce, the recruiting tool teaches local human resource professionals, recruiters and realtors about Sheboygan County and all it has to offer. It also provides sales and marketing training to help sell it.

Participants engage in networking activities the evening before to establish relationships. The next day, they visit local attractions, meet with community leaders and learn about topics deemed important to newcomers.

Several months in 2015 were spent hosting focus groups and listening to area newcomers of different ages, educational levels and cultural backgrounds to learn their concerns. Armed with this knowledge, the first pilot tour was created in August 2015. It was later renamed the Someplace Better Tour and expanded to include realtors.

Newly relocated employees sometimes struggle with finding their place in the community and the tour - with its focus on community activities, arts, culture, schools and housing options - provides a view of the community.

For more information visit www.sheboygan.org or email carissa@sheboygan.org. The tour is limited to 45 participants and the deadline to sign up is Aug. 10. Read more: Sheboygan Press
