Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago: Chicago Fed Letter - The Illinois Budget Crisis in Context: A History of Poor Fiscal Performance

Thomas Walstrum

The author looks back at Illinois’s expenditure and revenue performance since the late 1980s to understand the sources of its current fiscal crisis. The article shows that compared with the national average, Illinois used to be a relatively low-expenditure, low-revenue state. This changed in the mid-1990s, when, unlike the typical U.S. state, Illinois began consistently spending more than it brought in. A major contributor to this budgetary imbalance was the accumulation of pension liabilities. Read more: Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago

Joey Bragg no longer Columbus-Lowndes Chamber president

Joey Bragg is no longer the president of the Columbus-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce, according to a press release the Golden Triangle Development LINK issued Wednesday.

Bragg, who was hired in November 2014, served his last day Tuesday.

Former Director of Programs and Events Lisa James will serve as interim president until the CLCC board makes a new hire, said Macaulay Whitaker, vice president of internal and external affairs at the LINK. James was first hired by the CLCC in December 2015 and has worked there since January, Whitaker said.

Bragg declined to comment on whether he resigned from the Chamber or was fired. Whitaker also declined to comment on the reason for Bragg leaving because it was a personnel matter.

However, Bragg did confirm he had not secured another job.

"I'm just actively seeking employment, and we'll go from there," Bragg told The Dispatch in a phone interview Wednesday. "I'm just going to let you guys have the release that was sent today because right now I don't want to comment on the situation."

The CLCC and LINK will begin looking to hire a new staffer after the fiscal year closes Sept. 30, Whitaker said. She added the board has not determined which position the new hire will fill.

James was hired as director of programs and events at the CLCC in December 2015 and officially began working in January. She has a bachelor of arts in communication from Mississippi State University and has worked for the CLCC organizing programs focused on youth and adult leadership, education and community development.  Read more: Columbus Dispatch

Business Leaders Support School Readiness as Job One for Future Workforce Development

Smart Beginnings Greater Prince William & Prince William Chamber of Commerce host executive briefing on quality early learning

In Virginia, 1 in 8 children enter kindergarten without the basic skills needed to succeed in school.  In Greater Prince William, that number is nearly 1 in 7, with over 1,100 children beginning kindergarten already behind.

Smart Beginnings Greater Prince William and the Prince William Chamber of Commerce have partnered to bring Smart Beginnings: Job One, a briefing for business leaders that provides information on the role of quality early learning as the foundation for workforce success. The Luncheon is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in the Gregory Family Theatre, 10960 George Mason Circle, Manassas, VA 20109.

Education and Economic Development are areas that both the Prince William Chamber of Commerce and Smart Beginnings Greater Prince William agree on in terms of importance.  Job One is a program of the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation (VECF) that sheds light on the direct link between a strong start in the early years and a vibrant and productive workforce.
The keynote speaker for the event will be Paul D. Koonce, Executive Vice President of Dominion Resources, parent company of Dominion Virginia Power, and CEO of Dominion Generation. Koonce chaired the Virginia Chamber of CommerceBlueprint Virginia process, which identified quality early childhood education as a key driver for workforce success.

Every company is seeking smart, skilled employees who are well-qualified for 21st century jobs,” said Debbie Jones, President and CEO of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce. “Virginias business community has long recognized that the talent pool for the future workforce begins with young children who start school healthy and ready to learn.” For more information, visit our website at www.pwchamber.org or call the Prince William Chamber at 703-368-6600.
