2016 ACCE Chamber of the Year Winners are announced

The Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives is pleased to announce this year’s Chamber of the Year winners.

Winners were announced on August 10, 2016 at ACCE’s Annual Convention in Savannah. The 2016 Chamber of the Year Award is sponsored by WebLink International.

Chamber of the Year is the nation’s only award recognizing the dual role chambers have in leading businesses and communities. Chambers honored with the Chamber of the Year designation have not only demonstrated organizational strength, but also have made an impact on key community priorities, such as education, transportation, business development and quality of life.

Qualifying for Chamber of the Year is a rigorous process. Chambers compete based on meeting key performance criteria on the ACCE Annual Operations Survey. Qualifying chambers enter the competition with a written application addressing all aspects of organizational operation and programmatic work. Applications are scored by peer chamber executives to determine finalists. Winners are selected from among finalists based on an in-person interview before a panel of experienced chamber professionals

This year's competition drew entries from chambers throughout the U.S. and Canada. To ensure the fairest competition, applicants are grouped into five categories based on: annual revenue, membership, area population, and several other factors.

For more information about the award, including a list of past winners, visit the Chamber of the Year webpage. The winners are:

State/Province Category: Association of Washington Business
Olympia, Washington

Category 4: Commerce Lexington Inc.
Lexington, Kentucky

Category 3: Southwest Indiana Chamber

Category 2: Vail Valley Partnership
Avon, Colorado

Category 1: Catawba County Chamber of Commerce
Hickory, North Carolina

Commerce Lexington named ‘Chamber of the Year’ by Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives

Bob Quick
Commerce Lexington Inc. was named “Chamber of the Year” in the large chamber category (Category 4) during the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives’ (ACCE) annual convention in Savannah, Ga. on Wednesday night. The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce was a finalist in Category 3. A total of 16 organizations were named finalists.
The award recognizes the dual role chambers have in leading businesses and communities, honoring excellence in operations, member services, and community leadership. The comprehensive awards program includes an operations survey where chambers must meet key performance areas, an application that details two programs or initiatives, and finally in-person interviews with leaders from each finalist chamber conducted by a judging committee.
“This is the pinnacle for our organization, as well as our entire membership, the board of directors and volunteers, and the many partners with whom we work on a daily basis,” said Commerce Lexington Inc. President and CEO Bob Quick. “The award not only affirms that we are doing quality work in events and programs across our organization, but also recognizes the efforts of many great people throughout the region working day-in and day-out to strengthen Central Kentucky.” Read more: Lane Report

#BestChamber practices: Jasper Chamber - Patoka 2000 – Bridge Planters

The flowers on the Patoka River Bridge for Spring and Summer 2016 are beginning to fade and will soon be removed. Thanks to the many generous donors who have made donations in memory of or in honor of loved ones.

It is soon time to adorn the bridge with beautiful fall mums that will take us through the end of October/early November. In order to defray the costs of this beautification project, Patoka 2000 seeks donations from individuals, families or businesses throughout the community. You may make a donation in any amount and specify that the donation is in honor of someone, in memory of someone, or as a tribute to a favorite cause. By doing this, you are able to remember that person or cause, while admiring the beautiful bridge area every time that you drive across. Family members and friends are encouraged to chip in together for this great beautification project.

By working together we can continue to make Jasper a clean, bright community for those that live here and those that are just traveling through.

The flowers on the bridge are watered this year by the following volunteers: Judi Brown, Drew Englert, Kimball International Research & Development team, Debbie Allen State Farm Insurance staff, Jasper Jaycees (Ana Meneilly) and Gil & Nancy Eckerle.

A classified ad will be placed in The Herald (around October 18) stating all of those that donated funds and the people or cause they would like to have remembered or honored. Deadline for accepting donations for the Fall Project is September 30.

For more information on how to make a donation toward the flowers on the bridge or to assist with watering the bridge flowers, contact the Jasper Chamber of Commerce at 482-6866.

Chamber assist: Are you looking to start a business or expand an existing one?

The Wytheville-Wythe-Bland Chamber of Commerce can help. After co-sponsoring a entrepreneur business workshop earlier this year with the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity, Virginia Tourism Corporation, Virginia SBDC, and People Inc. the Chamber provided a notebook for the class. Since then, the Chamber has added many features to enhance the “My Entrepreneur Road Map” notebook.

Some of the many things you will find in the Entrepreneur Road Map book include: what is needed in a business plan, a simple business plan worksheet, tips on naming your business, selecting a business entity, financial needs, record keeping, traffic counts, regulations, licenses, economic impacts and many other business resources. One section contains many of the applications, forms or permits you will need to obtain and complete from various entities, such as the IRS, State Corporation Commission, Department of Health and information on local jurisdiction requirements.

Chamber Executive Director Jennifer Atwell said, “It has taken many hours to pull all the information together but has proven to be very beneficial. When I first started, every person I talked to or showed the book to gave me another idea of what should be included.”

While out distributing the notebook, Atwell added, “business leaders express how the notebook will be a great resource to assist those looking to start a business.”

Wendy Musick, owner of Rockstar Gems and the Button Babe in Wytheville, said, “I am so glad that I had the book when first getting started with my business. It was so great to have everything you need in one place and not have to wonder what I needed to do next.” Read more: swvatoday.com

Southaven Chamber has grand opening

With great hoopla and fanfare, the Southaven Chamber of Commerce officially opened the doors of its new Chamber building to the public Thursday with a ribbon cutting and social gathering.
"We're so excited," said Southaven Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Carmen Kyle. "We expected 200 and we have far more than that," added Kyle.
The Chamber features an Entrepreneurial and Business Center and Learning Center designed to help both start-up and existing businesses, according to Kyle.
"We want to give them the many tools they need to succeed," Kyle said as Chamber ambassadors gave tours of the new building, located in a former Trustmark Bank building, which was renovated, expanded and newly furnished.
Mayor Darren Musselwhite touted the building as an example of ongoing renovation efforts in the older section of Mississippi's third-largest city.
"The Chamber of Commerce has never had a free-standing building," Musselwhite said. "They've always leased space. It's a sign of the times that the city is moving forward, that the Chamber is moving forward. I want to congratulate Carmen, the Board, and her staff for a job well done."
Musselwhite called the location of the new Southaven Chamber of Commerce building in the historic, original part of the city as "symbolic."
"When Carmen told me they were considering buying the building, I said, of course," Musselwhite said. "It's perfect."
Musselwhite noted the Southaven Chamber of Commerce was established in 1969 and the Chamber building, formerly a bank, was also constructed that same year.
Musselwhite said he has driven past the building for several years and recalled how the building used to look, especially after it stood vacant.
Since that time, extensive remodeling has taken place and the former drive-through bank lanes were turned into a patio.
"This is where it should be," Musselwhite said. "This is the original part of Southaven. The biggest thing that I'm proud of is that it is symbolic to the revitalization efforts in the original part of Southaven."
Musselwhite said the turnout at the Chamber grand opening showcases the importance of the Chamber of Commerce within the city. Read more: De Soto Times

Madison Black Chamber of Commerce hosts city's first Black Restaurant Week

Several businesses across Madison are serving up diversity for Black Restaurant Week.
"I feel like it highlights what Madison has," Myra McNair, patron of That BBQ Joint, said.
"I'm sure other people don't know what Madison has to offer with all the different black restaurants," McNair continued.
The week of highlighting black owned restaurants is a first for Madison, and several people agreed it's a way to help put these dining establishments on the map.
"[This week creates] awareness... and a sense of
community," McNair said.
Madison's Black Chamber of Commerce helped organize the event, and Clement Henriques, co-owner of That BBQ joint, said he's glad a week like this has finally come.
"There's not a whole lot of highlighting individuals," Henriques said.
"There could be more of it and this is a positive step in the right direction in my opinion," he continued.
Black Restaurant Week in Madison ends Sunday, August 20th. Read more: NBC 15
