Good morning Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!
Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce gets AT&T grant
Ron Bunch |
Creating a robust pipeline of well-trained talent to support our businesses and grow our economy is top priority at the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce. In that pursuit, the Chamber has been the driving force in convening partners to offer educational programs and services in Warren County that directly benefit our businesses and job seekers alike.
Building on the momentum achieved through implementation of the principles of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in elementary and middle schools, the AT&T Aspire grant will allow the Chamber to begin to map out a path toward continuing that leadership training through the lens of career immersion in all area high schools. The Chamber will collaborate with schools as they work to integrate a career academy model with Covey leadership principles to create a curriculum that prepares students for both career and college. The final goal is for every high school graduate to have learned and applied leadership skills such as being proactive, accountable, resourceful, and professional to the hard skills associated with earning a nationally portable industry certification.
According to Chamber CEO Ron Bunch, "Talent is the Chamber's top priority. We work every day to ensure that our companies have the highly skilled talent pipeline they need to succeed. I would like to thank AT&T for their commitment to this community. The Aspire grant will allow us to create a national model of leadership infused career training that will produce highly skilled, well-trained talent that is career and college ready on the day they graduate. This is a monumental day for South Central Kentucky."
The Chamber has been a leader in developing talent initiatives that extend from the earliest opportunity in elementary school to postsecondary education to initiatives for incumbent workers. In 2011, the Chamber organized a group of private investors to implement Franklin Covey's The Leader In Me (TLIM) leadership training in all schools, K-12 in Warren County - the first initiative of its kind in the nation. In middle school, students continue with leadership training and begin exploring their future interests. On November 9 and 10, Bowling Green and Warren County 8th and 9th grade students will participate in SCK LAUNCH Experience, a hands on career expo centered on six key regional business sectors that will have the highest demand for talent over the next decade. Once to the high school level, thanks in large part to AT&T, students will continue learning leadership skills while they focus more directly on career interests. With these initiatives, Bowling Green and Warren County students will graduate with a strong career focus and the leadership skills to support a long and successful career. WBKO TV

MMAC: Most area economic indicators posted gains in June
Strong job growth helped drive improvement in June to most of the economic indicators tracked monthly by the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, but the number of positive indicators dipped a tad from May.
“Broad-based employment gains across a number of major industry sectors drove a strong metro area increase in overall job levels in June,” said Bret Mayborne, economic research director for the MMAC.
Of the 23 indicators tracked each month by the MMAC, 16 posted year-over-year gains in June, down from 17 in May, while data for one indicator (traffic at Mitchell International Airport) was not available for June.
Nonfarm employment averaged 872,300 in June, a 1.1 percent increase over year-ago levels. That pace of job growth is up from the 0.6 year-over-year average posted in the previous four months.
“June’s job increase marks a significant upgrade from that posted throughout most of 2016’s first half,” Mayborne said.
Seven of 10 major industry sectors posted year-over-year job increases in June in the area. The construction, mining and natural resources sector posted the largest employment gain in the region in June, up 6.2 percent.
The number of unemployed fell 3,500 in June compared to a year ago. The region’s seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate is now 4.9 percent (down from 5.4 percent a year ago), lower than the national 5.1 percent rate, but higher than the state’s 4.4 percent rate.
Unemployment compensation claims in the metro area fell 18.1 percent in June. Biz Times
Brookhaven-Lincoln County Start-up: Merchants come together for lighting project
It started with a few sparkles on top of one building, but now much of downtown Brookhaven is aglow at night with lights lining rooftops and sides of buildings. The lighting project, which started with the Brookhaven — Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce rooftop in June, was organized by the Brookhaven Trust, but that group was not alone in the endeavor.
Brookhaven Trust President Jason Snider said it has taken a lot of work and a lot of cooperation from various groups and business owners to make this project a reality. “There has been a lot of volunteer efforts provided into getting this completed,” Snider said.
“We wanted to ensure that the lights are classy and will last for years to come.” The project has taken cooperation from individuals, organizations and business owners throughout downtown Brookhaven. “It’s unreal how much communication is required to get something like this completed,” Snider said. “We’ve been working on this since the day after Christmas.” Troy Jordan of Brookhaven Electric and Owen Junkin of Junkin Enterprises are implementing the project, and funding is coming from the Brookhaven Trust and Brookhaven Tourism Council along with business owners.
“The Brookhaven Trust, we wanted to install LED lights because it’s high efficiency and low maintenance,” Snider said. “But the downfall is they cost a lot on the front end. It’s $10 a foot to install the lights.”
The Tourism Council created a fund to maintain the lights, and Brookhaven Trust is paying for the lights going down the side of the buildings.
“We wanted to outline the rooftops and also the building itself,” Snider said. Read more: Daily Leader
Chincoteague Chamber excitement: Virginia pony swim: a huge boost for local economy
With thousands spectators for the famous annual pony swim, Chincoteague officials say this week is likely to bring a big boost for area businesses.
According to the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce, tourism remains at the largest economic driver on Virginia's Eastern Shore.
Chamber executive director Evelyn Shotwell says there are roughly 20 hotels in the Chincoteague area.
With so many people traveling across state lines for the swim, Shotwell explains some hotels and restaurants are certainly reaping the benefits.
"Some folks say that they make more money this week than the entire first quarter of the year just because of the sheer number of people that are here," she explains. "It's like Christmas to a lot of people. It's homecoming to a lot of people that moved away and have come back here." Read more: WMDT TV
