Encouraging Message from NYC Doctor (via the Oshkosh Chamber)

Encouraging message from NYC Doctor - 10 minute video. Frontline physician gives us sound advice, makes the disease a little less scary, and gives us hope. Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce - Apr 2nd, 2020

The following video link was provided by US Senator Ron Johnson - link to video. The video was made by a New York City doctor, David Price. From his front-line experience in the nation’s coronavirus hot spot, Dr. Price gives us sound advice, makes the disease a little less scary, and gives us hope by empowering us. He helps put things into perspective as we weigh the human costs of the disease and our response. What makes the video so powerful is that Dr. Price is one of the heroes treating COVID-19 patients almost exclusively, and he’s not scared. Instead, he’s confident he will not catch the disease because he knows how to prevent it. Price’s advice: COVID-19 is transmitted primarily from the hands to the face. So be aware of your hands at all times. Keep them clean by washing often and using hand sanitizer. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE. If you’re sick or vulnerable, isolate yourself. In order to prevent overwhelming our health care system, go to the hospital only if you’re short of breath. Maintain social distancing. Feel free to use a face mask, primarily to train yourself NOT TO TOUCH YOUR FACE. But aerosolized transmission is far less common, so you don’t need an N95 face mask. Reserve those for front-line health care workers.

ADP: Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) update

Yesterday, the U.S. Treasury Department released new information on the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) which prioritizes millions of Americans employed by small businesses and non-profits, as well as the self-employed and independent contractors. Nearly $350 billion has been authorized for 100% federally guaranteed loans toward job retention and certain other expenses amid the pandemic and economic downturn. Importantly, borrowers are eligible for loan forgiveness on certain operating costs covered in this program. Generally speaking, as long as employers continue paying employees at normal levels during the eight weeks following the origination of the loan, then the amount they spent on payroll costs (excluding costs for any compensation above $100,000 annually), mortgage interest, rent payments, and utility payments can be combined and that portion of the loan will be forgiven. Due to likely high subscription, it is anticipated that not more than 25% of the forgiven amount may be for non-payroll costs.

The application process opens on this Friday, April 3, 2020 (for small businesses, non-profits, and sole proprietorships) and on Friday April 10, 2020 (for independent contractors and the self-employed).

Information for borrowers and lenders is listed below.

#Lookforthehelpers: Notre Dame Prep (Pontiac) Responds To Need For PPE (from the Auburn Hills Chamber)

Update: Currently, there are more than 10 members of the greater Notre Dame family working on 3D-printing components for face shields. The team plans to have at least 1,500 face shields completed soon with ongoing deliveries to the Waterford Fire Department. Fire Chief Matt Covey offered to distribute them to local EMS, fire, police and hospital facilities. Chief Covey noted that they also are in need of bottled water and healthy snacks.
Anyone interested in helping out can drop off water and snacks to the Waterford Township Fire Department at 495 Crescent Lake Rd. Waterford, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., M-F.
When Notre Dame parent Mike Deck reached out to the Notre Dame community with a plea to help create components for face shields used by medical personnel working with COVID-19 patients in hospitals and other medical facilities, Louise Palardy, an NDPMA science teacher, leapt into action.
"Mike's wife, who works in health care, said they had a great need for face shields," said Palardy, who also works as Notre Dame's STEM specialist and robotics teams coordinator. "He was able to take care of the needs at his wife's facility with his own 3D printer, but he wondered if we could help others in the area with the same type of 3D-printed visor frames."
It turns out that Fabian Fregoli, M.D., a school parent and board member who is chief medical officer at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital in Pontiac, also said his hospital was in need of help with face masks.
"Fabian said they were critically short of supplies, so I forwarded the .STL (stereolithography) file that Mr. Deck sent me to Fabian's son Giuseppe as a test and he printed one on their home 3D printer," Palardy said. "He checked it out and said it was really comfortable. So now we're discussing what kind of plastic shields will be most effective for the visor frames we print."
Palardy's home 3D printer, which is the same model as the one in Notre Dame's robotics center, is now up and running in high production. She had access to about seven spools of the filament used in the printer and figures she will be able to print about 250 visors with supplies on hand.
"Now I am hoping there are a number of people in our community who have 3D printers and filament on hand and could help support this project. I'm very happy to share the .STL file with them," Palardy said. "The print requires at least a 6" X 6" 3D printer bed."
Palardy told Fregoli that she could supply 500 of the visor components, so she's looking to the NDPMA community for any help with the 3D printing of the visors as well as with the procurement and attachment of the clear shields.
If you can help Palardy with this 3D project, please contact her at lpalardy@ndpma.org. Read more: Notre Dame Preparatory School

Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a GREAT day!

A Letter from Kim Urbanowski, Executive Director, Orion Area Chamber

I'm writing today to let you know that I am resigning my position as Executive Director of the Orion Area Chamber of Commerce.

The last three and a half years at the OACC have been an exciting time of growth, not only in building business but in building the community as a whole.  I am proud to have played a role in helping make Orion one of the most treasured places to live, work and play in Oakland County.

It has been deeply gratifying to work collaboratively with chamber members, community leaders and volunteers while representing the OACC.  Even though I will be leaving this position, I will not be leaving the community that I have grown to love, merely participating in a different capacity.

I want to thank the Board of Directors, past and present, for your leadership and dedication. Jillian and Noelle, I couldn't ask for a better team of stellar human beings to work with on a daily basis!

More information about the position will be made available soon.

Thank you for the opportunity, the experience and most of all the friendships.  It has been a pleasure working with you all.

Most Sincerely,
Kim Urbanowski

New Richmond Chamber Event: 2019 Hometown Holiday

Greetings Chamber Members!
We are excited to be knee deep in the 2019 Hometown Holiday preparations and looking forward to another fantastic celebration. In its first two years, New Richmond’s Hometown Holiday Celebration was a HUGE success with an estimated attendance of over 3000 people each year. With the support of our membership, we think year three will be even better! December 5th might seem far away, but some planning needs to happen now. Here’s what you need to know…
This event is a great opportunity to promote our Chamber members and bring the community together during the holiday season. The highlight of this event will once again be the Holiday Lights Parade, a Tree Lighting Ceremony in Glover Park with live music followed by Fireworks over the Mill Pond.
There are opportunities to sponsor this event if you are looking to gain some visibility and help ensure a successful event! Sponsors allow this event to be completely FREE for attendees and provide great, family-friendly activities. The list of ways to support is attached. This is truly a marketing opportunity that also improves our community - what a win!
All Chamber businesses can once again participate in our “Countdown to Christmas” flyer. We will begin distributing those on Halloween, so please submit special events and promotions that you will be having to celebrate the holiday season for inclusion in that flyer by October 15th.
Back in 2019 is a Hometown Holiday Map – let us know what your business or organization is doing on December 5th and we will add you to the map. Need ideas of what to offer? Give us a call, we are full of ideas!
We have invited Santa Claus to our Hometown Holidays Celebration and he has once again agreed to visit! We ask that he be the ONLY Santa in town that evening as to not confuse kids attending the festivities. Thank you in advance for celebrating the Holiday Season with us!

Harrisonburg Van Pool Fills Void for Employees Needing a Ride to Work

Gubsa Tomelso drove old, 25-person buses back in his native Ethiopia for years.
So he had no qualms when he began driving his George's Inc. coworkers to the plant for their second shift in a 14-person 2019 Ford Transit van.
"It's easy — no problem," said Tomelso , 41, of Harrisonburg.
Six months ago, George's Inc., which has a poultry plant in Harrisonburg, leased five vans for workers to form car pools.
"We started right off with five vans, and every one of them was pretty vacant for the first four weeks," said Quentin Custer, the human resources manager of George's Inc. in Harrisonburg. "We considered them rolling billboards at first."
But ridership began to grow steadily, and now roughly 60 to 70 workers use the vans every day, Custer said.
Now, Tomelso said he usually picks up about 10 passengers on the way to work, and he takes 13 of his fellow workers back to their respective homes.
Riders in the van said they found the service helpful for getting to work.
Brian Lopez, a George's worker, used to walk 35 minutes to the plant before the van pool was introduced.
Lopez said he signed up for the van pool as soon as he found out about it.
Frank Tamberrino, the president and CEO of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, said transportation is regularly cited as an issue employers face in finding workers.
"People are trying to get a bit more creative than maybe they were five to 10 years ago in trying to expand the labor pool and making it easier for employees to have access to jobs," he said.
Labor was not the sole driver for the program, though it did play a role in setting it up, Custer said.
George's doesn't have a high turnover rate, he said, adding that the plant celebrated both a 30-year and 40-year anniversary of workers in the last two weeks.
The average turnover in the poultry industry is 65%, according to a 2018 survey of 40 poultry plants around the country conducted by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association.
"People think there's not enough workers, but the truth is you treat people well enough, there are," Custer said. Read more: U.S. News and World Report

Latest Leadership Daviess County class now forming

Just over a year ago, members of the fourth class of Leadership Daviess County graduated from the nine-month long program that focuses on fostering a sense of community while identifying the needs of the county as a whole. Under the direction of Cindy Barber, Purdue Extension Daviess County’s community development educator, over 60 individuals have dedicated time to the program over the course of the last few years.
Now, after taking a year off, the program is looking for its next generation of leaders.
“This is a passion of mine,” said Barber who said there are four goals of the leadership program. “Our goals were to expand the leadership base of people who will assume active roles in the community; establish strong community networks among participants and community leaders; encourage community volunteerism and service and create a network of people to share creative ideas and promote community action.”
Barber said the program, which officially begins with a mandatory overnight retreat Oct. 24 and 25 at Camp Illiana, will meet on the third Thursday of each month through June of 2020.
“The monthly sessions last all day, from 8 a.m. until around 4 p.m.,” said Barber. “And participants are only allowed to miss one session. Each session focuses on a different topic. Those sessions take place around the county and we bring in a variety of guest speakers as well.”
Topics covered during the classes include getting to know Daviess County, identifying leadership style, leading through interpersonal communication, exploring diversity in Daviess County, managing conflict, getting involved in the county, serving on non-profit boards, exploring economic development in Daviess County, exploring education in the county, learning how local government works, building a healthy community and more. A visit to the Indiana Statehouse is also in the works.
Daviess County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau Executive Director and Leadership Daviess County graduate Samantha Bobbitt said the programs will open the eyes of even lifelong residents.
“I feel like we have created a family of leaders in the community that have a common goal,” said Bobbitt. “I’ve learned so much about this that I’ve grown up in and now I have a team of people that I know I can count on. It’s been one of the most exciting opportunities of my life.”
Tim Emmons, who works for the city of Washington, said the program not only opened his eyes to needs of the community but also gave him a boost of confidence.
“I’ve met many great people through Leadership Daviess County and thank all involved for the work they are doing through the program to make Daviess County an awesome place to call home,” said Emmons.
Like Bobbitt, Sara Norfolk from Perdue Farms is a Daviess County native. It was the networking that Norfolk said she enjoyed most about the leadership program. Read more: Washington Times Herald

First lady Deborah Bryant makes farewell tour stop in Gulfport

Deborah Bryant is making her farewell tour as her reign as first lady of Mississippi is coming to a close.
On Friday, she was the guest speaker at the Women Educating Enriching & Engaging event at the Knight Nonprofit Center in Gulfport.
Everywhere she goes, Bryant seems at home, and there’s always a hug for someone.
This kind of public exposure isn’t a natural fit.
“It was very intimidating,” she said. “I’m not an out-there kind of person. I love people, though, and that works really well. You know, when you love people, that makes life a whole lot better. I don’t like spotlight, and I think that was the hardest thing for me. I hate it."
Friday’s event organized by the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce attracted about 75 people to network.
“We thought that she’d just be somebody that the community really wanted to talk to,” said Katie Weldon with the chamber. “Because, you know, it’s her last year. We really wanted to understand what she’s been through the past eight years and what she’s looking forward to.” Read more: WLOX

Health Insurance for Hundreds of Thousands of Americans is at Risk Because of a Disappointing Court Decision

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is disappointed by the recent decision from the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia which found two core provisions of the Department of Labor’s (DOL) Association Health Plan (AHP) Final Rule unlawful. Dozens of chambers of commerce across the country have launched, or are in the process of launching new Association Health Plans as permitted by the final rule, with over 20,000 individuals currently covered by robust and affordable plans. In addition to the individuals currently covered, dozens of other state and local chambers are in the process of launching a new AHP, and estimate that over 300,000 individuals will obtain coverage through this opportunity in the coming year.
These new AHPs provide robust coverage with a myriad of consumer protections including a ban on excluding individuals based on pre-existing conditions. The U.S. Chamber will continue to work to support this policy in the courts and believe that the decision should be stayed pending the completion of the litigation.

Association Health plans are helping small businesses

In alignment with the Trump administration’s goal to provide new pathways for affordable and comprehensive health coverage, the Department of Labor’s June 2018 final rule on AHPs has been a welcome first step for millions of small businesses and self-employed individuals across the country. This regulation will allow thousands of small businesses the opportunity to purchase and enroll in robust and affordable health care coverage.

Addressing the concerns of small businesses in rural and urban communities

Small businesses and entrepreneurs operating in rural communities across America create an estimated two-thirds of all new jobs annually, however they are more likely than their urban counterparts to experience higher out of pocket costs for health care due to lack of competition within the marketplace.
In addition, a February 2019 study conducted by Small Business Majority found that rising health care costs were among the top three concerns for rural small business owners. By leveraging this new AHP opportunity, chambers of commerce across the country have begun to shift power back to consumers and provide another choice to individuals who would otherwise struggle to afford coverage.
In urban metropolitan areas, the rising cost of health care further compounds the problem as small businesses are simply not able to keep pace when it comes to recruiting and retaining labor when compared to large employers. Unable to absorb the rising costs of providing health coverage to their employees on the small and individual group markets, AHPs have been a welcome opportunity to level the playing field.

Centralized database for businesses and local chambers of commerce

To assist businesses and local/state chambers of commerce, the U.S. Chamber has created an AHP Database that provides a comprehensive directory of available AHPs for businesses who are looking to join one in their area, as well as a centralized database for associations to list an AHP they offer. In addition, if associations are interested in setting up an AHP of their own, the database includes resources and contact information for legal and benefit experts.
There’s no reason that small businesses and their employees should have less access and choices in coverage options. Read more: U.S. Chamber

Federal District Judge Rules Against U.S. Department of Labor AHPs

A Federal District Judge late on March 28 found as unlawful two provisions of United States Department of Labor's June 2018 Association Health Plan rule—putting the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry's recently-announced intentions to participate in an Illinois Chamber of Commerce-sponsored AHP in limbo. The DOL's options are to seek a stay while appealing the decision or revisit their AHP rules.

The ruling by Judge John D. Bates from the United States District Court for the District of Columbia follwed suit by Attorneys General representing 11 states and the District of Columbia stated that the DOL's implementation of President Donald Trump's October 17 Executive Order 13813 (Promoting Healthcare Choice and Competition Across the United States) as "clearly an end run" around the Affordable Care Act's (ACA) "most stringent requirements."

The Judge found that the DOL's expanded definition of an "employer" did not fit within the Employeee Retirement and Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1974, which the President cited in his Executive Order.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which strongly supported the DOL's AHP rule, is considering what actions it can take.

ECCI President and CEO John Quigley will return to Springfield on April 3 to discuss the matter with Illinois Chamber executives as part of a multi-chamber legislative trip that includes Chamber 630, Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce and Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce.

#FamousChamber of Commerce Quotation on Political Action (Justice Powell)

“Business must learn the lesson long ago learned by labor and other self-interest groups. This lesson is that political power is necessary; that such power must be assiduously cultivated and that, when necessary, it must be used aggressively and with determination – without the reluctance which has been so characteristic of American business.”

-- Justice Lewis F. Powell, 1971, in a memo to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, prior to his appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Shenandoah Valley named among top emerging industrial markets in 2019

The Shenandoah Valley was the only Virginia region to be listed in the “10 Emerging U.S. Industrial Markets to Watch in 2019” assessment produced by multibillion-dollar commercial real estate firm Colliers International.

“The fact that our market was the only one in Virginia is certainly a very positive sign for us, and we will certainly market that,” said Brian Shull, the director of economic development for Harrisonburg.

The Valley region is expected to rise from a secondary to a primary logistics market, according to a quote in the list from John Lesinski, the executive vice president of Colliers International’s Northern Virginia office.

Some of the Shenandoah Valley’s strengths listed by Colliers include growth potential, a large labor force and rail access to the Port of Baltimore and Port of Virginia.

The progress of local development is also discussed in Colliers’ assessment. Historically, new construction in the Shenandoah Valley has lingered around 1 million square feet. The area of new development in 2018 almost doubled to 1.8 million square feet.

If all 3.3 million square feet of 2019’s newly planned development is completed, it would be a record year, according to the assessment.

New businesses need a workforce to fill their staffing needs, and the educational institutions of the Valley help to provide a vast and educated pool of workers, Shull said.

“I think the fact that the I-81 corridor is really an education corridor as well plays into that,” he said. “You have an amazing pipeline for a future workforce.”

“When you combine that the great access that Interstate 81 provides, it’s easy to see why we were selected,” Shull added.

The proximity to the markets of the Baltimore, the Washington, D.C., metro area and the Ohio Valley is also highlighted in Colliers’ list.

“We provide quick and easy access to those markets, but the cost out here is significantly lower,” Shull said.

Annual asking rental rates in the Shenandoah Valley are $1 per square foot below the national average, according to Colliers. Although local prices have risen, as Colliers notes, 2018 finished with an average price of $4.27 per square foot per year.

“I have heard that our per square foot price is less than the national average,” said Casey Armstrong, director of community development for Rockingham County.

The costs may be lower because of the local government encouragement of industrial development, he said.

Frank Tamberrino, president and CEO of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, said Colliers International’s expertise and unbiased approach provide more legitimacy to the economic strength and potential of Shenandoah Valley. Read more: The Winchester Star

Accutech Systems Expanding its Headquarters to Downtown Muncie

At a news conference this morning, Accutech Systems, a leading software company for the trust and investment industry, announced plans to invest more than $5.5 million to purchase and redevelop a 40,000 SF building in downtown Muncie. Accutech currently employs 53 people locally and 25 additional remote workers. By 2023, the company intends to grow to at least 100 local employees.

“We were quickly outgrowing our current space and looked hard at multiple different options for our expansion. Ultimately, this is the community that I want to invest in and this project will allow us to continue our expansion in a space three times the size we have today. This project is going to allow us to retain our amazing workforce as well as attract more highly skilled talent to stay in, or relocate to, Muncie. We want to build on the groundwork that has been laid for Muncie’s revitalization and I am proud to have Accutech bring more density and energy in a commitment to being a long-standing anchor for our downtown’s current and future growth,” said Adam Unger, Accutech President.

Accutech’s new headquarters will bring renewed life into a former Sears Department Store building that has been underutilized for decades. The building is located in a premier location in the 100 block of Walnut Street, an area revitalized by a complete streetscape and utility reconstruction in 2017.

Mayor Dennis Tyler noted, “The City of Muncie, local foundations, private business owners, and so many others have demonstrated a long-term commitment to investing in our downtown. Accutech’s decision to choose our central city for their expansion is a testament to the work that has been done to make our city’s core an attractive and vibrant place that is poised for new investment. I am thrilled that we were able to efficiently mobilize and work collaboratively to give this 30-year family business an opportunity to retain and create high-quality job opportunities in our city’s core.”

Founded in 1987, Accutech provides innovative wealth management solutions through market-leading software and operations services, providing clients with operations specialists, software functionality, software support, daily processing, a hosted environment, data backup, disaster recovery, software upgrades, hardware upgrades and access to IT specialists.

The company plans to hire approximately 20 new employees this year in a variety of positions including trust operations assistants, IT specialists, software developers and software support. New positions are expected to offer salaries above both the state and Muncie-Delaware County average wage. Interested applicants may apply online at https://www.trustasc.com/forms/careers-at-accutech/.

Local elected officials and representatives of the Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, and Delaware Advancement Corporation joined company president Adam Unger to share the news to a crowd of business and community leaders.

“Accutech is the type of high-value company that every community is seeking to attract. They will create a dynamic workplace that will draw talent from the technology sector to Muncie, thereby advancing our efforts toward talent attraction, increased investment, and population growth,” said Jay Julian, President & CEO, Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Alliance.

“Indiana's tech community is on a roll thanks to the spirit and commitment of Hoosier entrepreneurs and innovators across the state," said Indiana Secretary of Commerce Jim Schellinger. "Companies like Accutech are not only helping advance our economy by developing new solutions with 21st century technology, they're also propelling our communities forward. With this announcement, it is clear that Accutech will be a true partner in enhancing the quality of place in the Muncie area and in supporting the continued momentum of Indiana’s tech industry and workforce."

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Accutech Systems up to $600,000 in conditional tax credits. These tax credits are performance-based, meaning until Hoosiers are hired, the company is not eligible to claim incentives. The city of Muncie is also supporting the project and has executed an economic development agreement with the company. The public approval process for local assistance is underway. Happy 50th NKY Chamber!!!

Today April 1st, 2019 marks the 50th birthday of The NKY Chamber. To commemorate the occasion we have dug up an article from 1969... "At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, the Covington-Kenton-Boone Chamber of Commerce will meet at the Town and Country Restaurant, Park Hills. At the same time the Chamber of Commerce of Campbell County will meet at Glenn Schmidt’s Restaurant in Newport. Mark well that date; it must be a historic one.

On that auspicious evening the 700 members of the two chambers will vote on a plan of consolidation already worked out by a joint committee. If they ratify the merger, the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce will be born on the first day of April, 1969.

For the first time in a century and a half, business and industry in this three-county area will be able to speak with a single strong voice. The old factionalism that has divided the very sources of economic strength in this unique community then will be out of vogue. The Licking River, one a kind of mental hazard barring effective area-wide action, will cease to exist except as a communal waterway.

Already some leaders have hailed the new chamber as the first step toward a drawing together of public services and local governments in the area. There can be little doubt that the NKCC will quickly become a catalyst for further collaboration of groups and interests in such fields as transportation, river development, education, and industrial expansion.

With the separatism that has sapped the region’s strength left far behind, the prospect for all citizens of Northern Kentucky is exciting, inspiring, and challenging. We of The Kentucky Post expect great accomplishments under the new, upgraded leadership of the Northern Chamber.

The whole area owes a substantial debt of gratitude to Robert Shaffer, president of the Campbell Chamber; Gordon Martin, president of the Covington-Kenton-Boone Chamber, and to the joint committee members, Edwin Hengelbrook Jr., Henry Pogue, Howard Wendling, Walter Pieschel, Frank Middleberg, and Robert Tarwin. A hearty “Well done!” to these architects of consolidation."- The Kentucky Post, February 26th, 1969

Association of Chamber of Commerce executives select Gulf Coast Chamber's Hernandez

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce, Inc. has announced Membership Development Coordinator, Mei-Li Hernandez, has been selected to participate in the ACCE Membership Development Division Sales Mentorship Program for 2019.
ACCE and Membership Development Division volunteers match applicants to experienced sales professionals for monthly consultations and training throughout the calendar year. Mentees will benefit from the advice of mentors on best practices and recommended resources for all aspects of the sales process, including goal setting, time management, sales style, and more. Mentors will also serve as sounding boards for typical sales challenges.
Hernandez will provide her mentor with her goals for the year, and a plan will be developed on how to achieve these goals and beyond efficiently and successfully.
