P3 Kentucky to help leaders with public-private partnerships, infrastructure

New law paves way for water/sewer, economic development and other investments

LOUISVILLE (May 15, 2017) – P3 Kentucky, a new communications hub, will help inform and connect Kentucky’s local and state leaders who are considering public-private partnerships to solve pressing needs for water and sewer improvements, economic development projects and other public infrastructure investments.
To mark the start of National Infrastructure Week, P3 Kentucky on Monday launched its new website, P3KY.com, and is distributing e-newsletters to more than 4,000 local, state, economic development and business leaders.
Thanks to Gov. Matt Bevin and the Kentucky General Assembly, Kentucky now has one of the nation’s most expansive laws to encourage the use of public-private partnerships for public infrastructure needs. P3 isn’t a funding source, it’s a financing tool that can provide both upfront capital and private-sector expertise to move projects to construction.
While some Kentucky cities and state cabinets have successfully used P3, the financing tool is still unfamiliar to many local and state leaders who have relied on traditional bonding or annual budgets to pay for public infrastructure.
“Our mission is to educate and connect the thousands of leaders across the Commonwealth who have the power to combine business-minded innovation and public-minded investments,” said Ed Green, editor of P3 Kentucky. “Experience tells us big things can happen when the public and private sectors work together to find solutions.”
P3 Kentucky is a venture of C2 Strategic Communications, a Louisville-based communications firm that focuses on transportation, economic development and community improvement projects.
Leading statewide groups supporting P3 Kentucky
The statewide groups that pushed for the changes in Kentucky’s P3 law are supporting the communications venture by serving on the P3 Kentucky Roundtable, a group of thought leaders and experts who provide advice on public infrastructure projects.
The roundtable includes representatives of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Kentucky League of Cities, Kentucky Association of Counties, Kentucky Magistrates and Commissioners Association, Kentuckians for Better Transportation, Associated General Contractors of Kentucky, the American Council of Engineering Companies, Kentucky Chapter and the Kentucky Association for Economic Development.
“Public Private Partnerships will move the Commonwealth forward on important investments thereby creating jobs, completing necessary infrastructure projects and efficiently serving the public,” said Ashli Watts, vice president, public affairs for the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. “ The use of P3’s will help Kentucky’s business community, local governments, contractors and workforce forge ahead with needed infrastructure and services in an innovative fashion.” Read more: Lane Report

Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce: Landscaping Camp May 26-28

Landscaping Camp, May 26-28th, Inn at Ole Miss on the University of Mississippi Campus in Oxford: "We'll be rolling out the Green Carpet, to 45 participants coming from all over MS, TN, GA and MD as they enjoy the seminars and visits to the magnificent landscaped campus and private homes. With April Showers giving way to May flowers, our thoughts turn to getting our lawns and landscaping ready for summer. Memorial Day weekend is regarded as the best time to plant annuals, as there is no longer any risk of frost. MS. The Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Foundation Retirement Attraction program are hosting the Landscaping Camp. An outstanding line-up of professionals will be presenting talks, tours, and visits to two beautiful homes. Flint & Genesee Chamber eTEAM Recognizes Rising Star, Spark Award Recipients

On May 11, the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce’s eTEAM named the 2017 recipients of the Rising Star and Spark Awards during the 10th Annual Jumpstart Entrepreneurs’ Conference.
“Small businesses are vitally important to the economic well-being of Flint & Genesee,” said Tim Herman, CEO of the Flint & Genesee Chamber. “The Spark and Rising Star awards highlight success stories and provide inspiration for others to follow in their footsteps.”
The Spark Award honors start-up businesses that have been operating for less than two years. It recognizes their “entrepreneurial spark,” as demonstrated by their determination, vision, market, growth potential, and setting and achieving business goals. This year’s Spark Award winners are:

  • AJP Commercial Shredding, Flint. Provides onsite mobile document destruction services. In 2016, owner April Paylor jumped at an opportunity to buy an existing shredding business. She had a solid business plan and secured financing through Metro Community Development, an eTEAM agency. AJP is the only mobile shredding company in Genesee County.
  • Curly Girl Lemonade, Flint. Not your traditional lemonade stand, Curly Girl is a beverage vending service for special events, weddings and festivals. Youth entrepreneurs Madison Smith and Alexandria Gibson — both 9-years-old — offer a fresh recipe with unique specialty flavors, such as fresh mint, cucumber and Arnold Palmer.
  • Spectacular Spudz, Flint. Owner Keysa Smith began catering in 2014 and soon opened Spectacular Spudz at the Flint Farmers’ Market, serving her premium signature baked potatoes loaded with steak, chicken and various veggies.
  • Spectrum Billing Technologies, Flint. Owner Jackie Scotten began her firm just over a year ago, providing medical business office technologies and financial services for physician practices. Since then, Spectrum has become a standout in medical billing with a 98 percent claim acceptance rate and has clients across the country. The company has 11 full-time and two part-time employees.
The Rising Star Award was presented to two businesses: The Professional Painter’s Guild, of Davison; and Knob Hill Bed and Breakfast, of Flint. The award, which honors a growing business beyond the startup phase, recognizes strengths related to growth, leadership, operations, innovation, and/or special work in the community.

The Professional Painter’s Guild is a painting contractor founded by Josh and Jessia Alexander. It provides a variety of services, including residential and commercial painting, remodeling and deck refinishing. In just 18 months, the company has grown from a sole proprietorship to a limited-liability-company (LLC) with five employees and annual revenues of nearly $300,000.

Knob Hill B&B owners Allan Griggs and Diana Phillips believe in the spirit of Flint and its cultural and recreational assets, so they decided to buy and rehab a classic home to create an elegant bed-and-breakfast. Knob Hill opened in 2016 and is on a strong growth curve in a risky segment of the hospitality industry.

The Chamber’s eTEAM is a regional collaboration of more than a dozen entrepreneurial service providers working to connect local entrepreneurs and small businesses with resources to promote growth and success. For more information, visit www.flintandgenesee.org.

Chamber’s Leadership Fredericksburg Graduates Tenth Class

FREDERICKSBURG – The Chamber’s Leadership Fredericksburg program graduated its tenth class of “Fellows” during a May 19 ceremony at the Jepson Alumni Center.

Leadership Fredericksburg 2017 class president, Jeremy Pickwell, recounted his experiences in the program and encouraged others to apply for the 2018 class. Jeremy is the Executive Director of Operations for Lifepoint Church where he oversees the expansion efforts of the church, financial operations, and leadership of the campus pastors.

Michelle Caldwell Thompson was the keynote speaker. She is the owner of CTI Real Estate, the largest African American-owned residential real estate firm in Planning District 16. She has been the Principal Broker of CTI Real Estate since 2004 and is responsible for corporate strategic initiatives, ensuring regulatory compliance, and managing its team of over fifty real estate professionals in three regional offices. She is also a 2013 Leadership Fredericksburg graduate.

The 30 Fellows in the 2017 class began their Leadership Fredericksburg journey in September with a personality profile assessment. Each month, community, business, nonprofit, political, and educational leaders offered the Fellows insights about their personal leadership journeys. Also, each Fellow was paired with a trained mentor from the business community who supported their progress throughout the program.

The Fellows divided into four teams, each of which partnered with an area non-profit on a service project. Each team presented “deliverables” – concrete results – to its partner. This year participating non-profits were Loisann’s Hope House, Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity, Dahlgren Heritage Foundation and Rappahannock Goodwill Industries.

Leadership Fredericksburg is now accepting applications for its 2018 class. A selection committee will screen the applications in July and announce the new class in August.
An application can be obtained online at www.fredericksburgchamber.org or by calling the Chamber office at (540) 373-9400. The cost is $1,900 for businesses, $1,550 for nonprofits and $2,600 for non-Chamber members. There is a $25 application fee. Virginia Peninsula Chamber interest: 2017 Kellam, Weaver, Fagan & Mary Jane Hastee Internships

Overview
Over the course of the spring/summer of 2017, the Peninsula Community Foundation will be working with employers in the city of Hampton to secure summer internships with local businesses for college juniors and seniors who were the recipients of the Kellam, Weaver, Fagan and Mary Jane Hastee Scholarships in 2014 & 2015.

The internship would match highly qualified students who feel a desire to return to Hampton after they graduate and apply their skills and talents in this community. The scholars were selected based on their outstanding achievements in Hampton’s high schools and their continued success in college.  These well-rounded students not only excelled academically, but also are very involved with extracurricular and community activities.

We would ask that you submit a paragraph detailing what skill sets you desire, so that we might best match a student whose talents and interest will bring value to your organization. ADP UNVEILS NEW LOGO!

For 25 years, The Area Development Partnership (ADP) has represented the region’s businesses and their employees. That history of service and growth is blended with an eye toward the economic future for Greater Hattiesburg. The organization unveiled a new logo at its First Friday Breakfast event.
The updated look is modern, crisp, and in-sync with the ADP’s newly renovated website. While elements from the organization’s mission to enhance quality of life through economic progress are at the forefront, and further emphasize its role to build on the region’s continuous growth, the colors were derived from feedback the membership provided when asked via survey to give one-word quotes that best describe the ADP. Blue, the principle color, signifies the organization’s longstanding reputation as professional and stable, while Green represents growth and communication with stakeholders. Orange stands for positivity and enthusiasm. “We are pleased to unveil the ADP’s new logo to our members and community. The previous logo served us very well, almost 25 years to be exact. The new logo tells a story about who we are as an organization, and our vision for the future,” said Chad Newell, President of the ADP. “The colors are blended to show upward momentum as we continue to move the economic needle forward, and highlights positivity and enthusiasm which are at our core. There are also traces of a star interwoven into the design, as we certainly intend to continue our bold leadership here in the Gulf South.”
The Area Development Partnership (ADP) represents the voice of business and serves as the Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development organization representing Forrest, Lamar and Perry Counties. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life in Greater Hattiesburg through economic progress. For more information, you may contact the chamber at: 601.296.7500; 1 Convention Center Plaza, Hattiesburg, MS. or WWW.THEADP.COM.

A Chamber Superstar you should know: Tim Hyma, Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce

CEO of the Sparta Area Chamber Of Commerce Selected for Tourism Award

Tim Hyma of Sparta wins the 2016 Rising Star Award for State Tourism

Sparta, WI – The Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that Tim Hyma, CEO for the Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce, was selected for the Rising Star Award at the Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Tourism last Tuesday, March 15, 2016. There were 23 nominations for tourism awards with five going toward the Rising Star Award.

The Governor’s Tourism Rising Star Award is awarded to an individual who is new to the tourism industry – within the last five years – and has shown leadership, commitment and a passion for Wisconsin’s tourism industry. The other nominations hailed from Lancaster, La Crosse, Boscobel and Marshfield.

Since becoming CEO three years ago, tourism in Sparta has increased 19%. Tim has served at the ground floor level on revitalizing the Sparta Community Holiday Lights program, which just obtained their own non-profit status. His involvement in the community brought in Theisen’s, an Iowa based retail business into Wisconsin. He also was instrumental in developing a tourism campaign for motorcycles (Driftlessdestinations.net) that had a $1,800,000 economic impact for a five county area in 2015. More recently, he partnered with Port Byron, IL to create a 6-day bicycle tour through Southwest Wisconsin. Most recently, Tim has been instrumental in the Downtown Cooperatives efforts to start a Kriskindlmarkt, a traditional German Christmas market, and to continue to make it an annual event in December, drawing many people from the tristate area.

Tim has demonstrated a commitment to the tourism industry by embracing a regional approach to include neighboring cities and counties in an effort to raise awareness about the area. He has brought back Sparta’s presence at tradeshows and shares the Sparta story with the media.

Tim is involved at the state level for advocating for funding tourism projects locally. Tim is currently working with the Department of Transportation and the City of Sparta to develop a park n’ ride and an park to honor all WI Astronauts along Interstate 90. Locally, Tim has advocated for single track bicycle trails, creating a $160,000 trail system along the La Crosse River. This is in the initial stages of being built and is estimated to be completed in 2017.

Indiana Chamber: Action needed on townships

A recent story about charges being filed against a township trustee in Henry County for allegedly stealing taxpayer funds between 2013 and 2015 is unfortunately not surprising. It is yet another arrest in a long series of incidents involving township employees that have occurred around the state.

The Indiana Chamber first communicated on the topic of local government reform and ongoing abuses by township officials nearly 20 years ago. The fact that we still must do so today is depressing and unforgivable.

State legislators were provided a playbook in 2007 when the Kernan-Shepard Commission called for the elimination of this unnecessary level of government. In a statewide survey, two-thirds of Hoosiers acknowledged they had never used township services.

State lawmakers have repeatedly failed to act upon that recommendation; that’s simply inexcusable. With more than 1,200 bills filed in this session, the number that take on the outdated – and as we continue to see, criminal – practices of townships is a big fat zero.

How many more township officials have to go to jail and how many more thousands of taxpayer dollars have to be stolen before the General Assembly takes action? Legislators, who is willing to step up to the job?

Saginaw County Chamber: Common Sense Regulation for Ridesharing Companies Provides Safety and Allows Growth

Saginaw, Mich – Ridesharing (services like Lyft and Uber) is changing the way we think about transportation here in Michigan and across the country.  Transportation Network Companies (TNC’s) are providing our state with increased access and options for transportation while spurring entrepreneurial pathways for many of our residents. Ridesharing can do this by utilizing an innovative technological platform that makes getting a ride in your neighborhood possible in minutes with just the click of a phone application.

Ridesharing allows for quick access, easy cashless payments and the ability for drivers to work on their own schedule.  The technology is new, however, that should not spur the government to overregulate TNC’s.   Instead, common sense legislation such as the Transportation Network Company Act, currently being reviewed by the Senate Regulatory Committee, should be passed as the framework for how ridesharing is regulated in our state.

This legislation offers simple, but effective oversight.  Specifically, the Act stipulates that any TNC wishing to operate in our state must first register and obtain a permit from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).  Very similar to what’s already taken place in over 36 states across the country, permits will only be given to TNC’s that conduct extensive background checks on drivers and must adopt a zero-tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol.  Also, TNC’s must secure insurance coverage for all those participating in the transportation experience, including for passengers, drivers and fellow motorists on the road.  The Act would keep Michigan rider’s safe, while at the same time allowing for growth and expansion of the TNC services across our state.

The Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce supports growth and business expansion.  We support and promote business to better spur our local economy.  We advocate for policy that allows businesses to thrive and provide ways for people to earn needed income, rather than to be hindered by overregulation. The Transportation Network Company Act is an effective package of bills that would regulate TNC’s for the purpose of safety, accessibility and accountability while at the same time allowing them to operate efficiently in our state.  Our state must welcome and adopt business that will only add to our thriving communities.  Learn More about us here: Saginaw County Chamber

Greensburg-Decatur County chamber: Shopping for a better local economy

Several dozen local ladies spent the day Wednesday shopping Tree City small businesses as they worked toward building a better economy during the tenth annual Shopping Scramble hosted by the Greensburg-Decatur County Chamber of Commerce.
The annual event lasts six hours, though its impact lingers far longer. Because $0.68 of every dollar spent at a locally-owned business is recirculated in the community, the scramble benefits not only the store owners, but the Greensburg economy as a whole, according to Chamber Executive Director Jeff Emsweller.
In addition to supporting Greensburg merchants, the program also yields financial support for a Decatur County non-profit and the Chamber’s small business grant program. Sixty-eight shoppers hit the streets to support small businesses.
“There’s no reason you can’t buy locally,” Emsweller said. “It keeps the economy going and makes us a great community.”
Local food pantry Greensburg Bread of Life was the recipient of a $500 check at the Shopping Scramble’s kick-off ceremony hosted at Arbor Grove Village Wednesday morning.
After being unleashed to flex their pocketbooks in both the downtown shopping district and elsewhere in the city, shoppers gathered at Aspen Place Health Campus to end the day with gourmet desserts and prizes.
Emsweller also thanked the event’s sponsors. “We can’t thank our sponsors enough. All that money is going to good use and we hope they receive benefits as well. We’ve had merchants ask to do this more than once a year.”
The funds from the Shopping Scramble will help fund the Chamber’s annual $1,000 small business grant.
The youngest shopper clocked in at age 21 and the oldest at over 80. Though the group of 68 is small compared to Greensburg’s population of over 20,000, these ladies likely spent several thousand dollars in just six hours. More than one woman spent more than $300 at a single place and the shopper that spent the most shelled out over $500.
While Emsweller said the totals have not been calculated yet, “I’m going to estimate shoppers spent about $5,000.” Emsweller added that there was only about 4.5 hours of shopping time, making the total that much more impressive. Read more: Greensburg Daily News

Chamber contribution: Sparta to open at-risk youth program

The Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce has more than just the business community on its mind.
Over the last year, the organization has been working to start The Transition Program. It's a collaborative effort between the Wisconsin Challenge Academy, The Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations.
The program is offering recently graduated cadets from the Wisconsin National Guard Challenge Academy an opportunity to transition out of the academy and into the workforce.
The goal is to help at-risk youth who typically attend the the Challenge Academy because of bad habits and tough life experiences. Program leaders say transitioning out of the program, often times leaves the youth fearful of what's next. But that will soon change.
"So essentially offering them an opportunity to rather than going back to environments that they view as unfavorable, the opportunity to stay closer, to continue to stay connected with the Challenge Academy and in a community that they've been serving for the last five and a half months," said Kristi Paulsen, a member of The Transition Program committee.

Director of the Wisconsin Challenge Academy says The Transition Program is the right next step for cadets who have already been preparing for life after the academy.

"The cadets have a responsibility to put a five step plan together that talks about what their initial, their intermediate and their long term goals are, and then put an action plan together of how they're gonna get there," said Kevin Greenwood.

Greenwood said those goals will be easier to meet, when the opportunity is already there.

"Part of The Transition Program is to offer our cadets the opportunity or an option for when they graduate from the program," he said.
The Transition Program will officially begin June of 2017 and plans to start with six graduated cadets.

The Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce invested 2,000 dollars to help start the program. Read more:  News 8000
