Virginia Peninsula Chamber interest: 2017 Kellam, Weaver, Fagan & Mary Jane Hastee Internships

Overview
Over the course of the spring/summer of 2017, the Peninsula Community Foundation will be working with employers in the city of Hampton to secure summer internships with local businesses for college juniors and seniors who were the recipients of the Kellam, Weaver, Fagan and Mary Jane Hastee Scholarships in 2014 & 2015.

The internship would match highly qualified students who feel a desire to return to Hampton after they graduate and apply their skills and talents in this community. The scholars were selected based on their outstanding achievements in Hampton’s high schools and their continued success in college.  These well-rounded students not only excelled academically, but also are very involved with extracurricular and community activities.

PCF Contribution
The foundation will match student’s skills and interests with community businesses for an internship in the spring/summer of 2017.  Our goal is to provide you with qualified students whose interest and education will be an asset to your business this summer and possibly upon their graduation.

Community Partner Contribution
As a partner with the foundation, you would be responsible for the supervision and training of the student. We would ask that you submit a paragraph detailing what skill sets you desire, so that we might best match a student whose talents and interest will bring value to your organization. Please include the number of hours you anticipate needing an intern’s service, with a minimum number of 15 hours per week.

Finances
The foundation, through the Kellam, Weaver Fagan and Mary Jane Hastee Scholarship Fund will contribute $5.00 per hour for each student up to a maximum of 120 hours.   Community Partners are asked to contribute an additional $5.00 per hour for each intern.  Details regarding the distribution of their salary will be formalized between the Community Partners and the Foundation at a later date.

We look forward to partnering with local business to provide internships for these exceptional students. If you are interested in this program, please contact us at: lward@pcfvirginia.org or call us at 327-0862.

Sincerely,

Michael Monteith
Chief Executive Officer

This is the second year the committee has hosted the event, which carries the theme “Powered by Purpose” for 2017. The day-long conference will allow attendees to discover the steps they can take to uncover their purpose, reconnect to their organization’s “why,” attract and engage the right people for their efforts and thrive as a team.

ADP UNVEILS NEW LOGO!

For 25 years, The Area Development Partnership (ADP) has represented the region’s businesses and their employees. That history of service and growth is blended with an eye toward the economic future for Greater Hattiesburg. The organization unveiled a new logo at its First Friday Breakfast event.
The updated look is modern, crisp, and in-sync with the ADP’s newly renovated website. While elements from the organization’s mission to enhance quality of life through economic progress are at the forefront, and further emphasize its role to build on the region’s continuous growth, the colors were derived from feedback the membership provided when asked via survey to give one-word quotes that best describe the ADP. Blue, the principle color, signifies the organization’s longstanding reputation as professional and stable, while Green represents growth and communication with stakeholders. Orange stands for positivity and enthusiasm. “We are pleased to unveil the ADP’s new logo to our members and community. The previous logo served us very well, almost 25 years to be exact. The new logo tells a story about who we are as an organization, and our vision for the future,” said Chad Newell, President of the ADP. “The colors are blended to show upward momentum as we continue to move the economic needle forward, and highlights positivity and enthusiasm which are at our core. There are also traces of a star interwoven into the design, as we certainly intend to continue our bold leadership here in the Gulf South.”
The Area Development Partnership (ADP) represents the voice of business and serves as the Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development organization representing Forrest, Lamar and Perry Counties. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life in Greater Hattiesburg through economic progress. The Christian County Chamber of Commerce is hosting its Third Annual Total Resource Campaign and membership drive through March 31.
The four-week revenue-generating effort kicked off March 3 to reach a goal of $275,000.
The Total Resource Campaign has three teams of 20 volunteers under the leadership of Co-Chairs DeeAnna Sova of Jennie Stuart Medical Center and Traci Mason of WHOP Radio.
The chairs recruit volunteers to market sponsorships of Chamber events and publications, while also seeking new members for the Chamber. A Chamber Superstar you should know: Tim Hyma, Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce

CEO of the Sparta Area Chamber Of Commerce Selected for Tourism Award

Tim Hyma of Sparta wins the 2016 Rising Star Award for State Tourism

Sparta, WI – The Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that Tim Hyma, CEO for the Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce, was selected for the Rising Star Award at the Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Tourism last Tuesday, March 15, 2016. There were 23 nominations for tourism awards with five going toward the Rising Star Award.

The Governor’s Tourism Rising Star Award is awarded to an individual who is new to the tourism industry – within the last five years – and has shown leadership, commitment and a passion for Wisconsin’s tourism industry. The other nominations hailed from Lancaster, La Crosse, Boscobel and Marshfield.

Since becoming CEO three years ago, tourism in Sparta has increased 19%. Tim has served at the ground floor level on revitalizing the Sparta Community Holiday Lights program, which just obtained their own non-profit status. His involvement in the community brought in Theisen’s, an Iowa based retail business into Wisconsin. He also was instrumental in developing a tourism campaign for motorcycles (Driftlessdestinations.net) that had a $1,800,000 economic impact for a five county area in 2015. More recently, he partnered with Port Byron, IL to create a 6-day bicycle tour through Southwest Wisconsin. Most recently, Tim has been instrumental in the Downtown Cooperatives efforts to start a Kriskindlmarkt, a traditional German Christmas market, and to continue to make it an annual event in December, drawing many people from the tristate area.

Tim has demonstrated a commitment to the tourism industry by embracing a regional approach to include neighboring cities and counties in an effort to raise awareness about the area. He has brought back Sparta’s presence at tradeshows and shares the Sparta story with the media.

Tim is involved at the state level for advocating for funding tourism projects locally. Tim is currently working with the Department of Transportation and the City of Sparta to develop a park n’ ride and an park to honor all WI Astronauts along Interstate 90. Locally, Tim has advocated for single track bicycle trails, creating a $160,000 trail system along the La Crosse River. This is in the initial stages of being built and is estimated to be completed in 2017.

Indiana Chamber: Action needed on townships

A recent story about charges being filed against a township trustee in Henry County for allegedly stealing taxpayer funds between 2013 and 2015 is unfortunately not surprising. It is yet another arrest in a long series of incidents involving township employees that have occurred around the state.

The Indiana Chamber first communicated on the topic of local government reform and ongoing abuses by township officials nearly 20 years ago. The fact that we still must do so today is depressing and unforgivable.

State legislators were provided a playbook in 2007 when the Kernan-Shepard Commission called for the elimination of this unnecessary level of government. In a statewide survey, two-thirds of Hoosiers acknowledged they had never used township services.

State lawmakers have repeatedly failed to act upon that recommendation; that’s simply inexcusable. With more than 1,200 bills filed in this session, the number that take on the outdated – and as we continue to see, criminal – practices of townships is a big fat zero.

How many more township officials have to go to jail and how many more thousands of taxpayer dollars have to be stolen before the General Assembly takes action? Legislators, who is willing to step up to the job?
