Chicago Fed: Index Points to Steady Midwest Economic Growth in September
The Midwest Economy Index (MEI) was unchanged at +0.37 in September. Contributions to the September MEI from one of the four broad sectors of nonfarm business activity and one of the five Seventh Federal Reserve District states increased from August. The relative MEI fell to –0.06 in September from +0.35 in August. Contributions to the September relative MEI from all four sectors and four of the five states decreased from August. Read more
Workforce Training Solution Wisconsin DWD Fast Forward
Employers across Wisconsin are having difficulties finding and retaining skilled workers to fill their open positions to be competitive in their industries. Wisconsin Fast Forward (WFF) grants offer employers a solution to these workforce demands.
WFF grants reimburse the cost of development and implementation of training that prepares workers to do specific jobs that are available now. An employer, or consortium of employers, designs and leads the training with the commitment, from one or more employers, to hire or retain the trainees at the end of a successful completion of training. Additional grant partners can include technical colleges, private training providers, community-based organizations and others.
Ideally, this training puts the trainees on a career pathway to success. The focus is on improving their employment potential and their skills, while training them to meet the specific needs of the employer, making the employer more competitive. Applying is easy, grants are awarded quarterly, and staff are available to provide one-on-one support and technical assistance.
To date, more than 20,000 trainees have been trained through Wisconsin Fast Forward. Training covered a wide range of skills, including lean training for production workers increasing productivity, software training for designers, medical assistant training, industrial maintenance training, CDL training, and many more.

• Applications accepted year-round with grants awarded quarterly
• Quick turnaround time between the application deadline and grant award
• Grants for All Sectors:
o Award amount: $5,000 to $400,000
o Match: $1:$1
• Grants for Small Businesses (50 full time employees or less)

o Match: $.50:$1
Recent changes to WFF:
• New "Wisconsin Fast Forward Jump Start" grants will be awarded to provide entry-level worker training. Entry-level workers are people with little to no work experience in a given discipline. These grants include funding for soft skills training and support services, with award amounts up to $200,000.
• Allows for tuition reimbursement as part of a larger training program when it is more economical than other options such as on-site training.
• Allows for reimbursement of training that has not been previously offered by the employer.

Keynoting the morning will be Thomas D. Kuczmarski, president and founder of the global consulting firm Kuczmarski Innovation and an internationally recognized expert on innovation. During the course of his career, he has helped hundreds of clients, ranging from small businesses to Fortune 100 corporations, learn to systematically unlock the value of innovation. Attendees to the summit will receive a copy of his latest book, Lifting People Up: the Power of Recognition (Book Ends Publishing, 2018).

Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry Welcomes Mastromauro as Director of Member Services
Mariella Mastromauro has been hired as the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s new Director of Member Services, effective October 16, ECCI President and CEO John R. Quigley announced.
Mastromauro succeeds Tessa Zemgulys, who served as Director of Member Services from October of 2016 until her July 2018 resignation to start her own business.
Zemgulys started working at the Chamber in January of 2011 as a non-traditional Elmhurst College JOBPATH Program student intern and then served as Executive Assistant to the President and CEO from June of 2011 to October of 2016.
“While Tessa’s departure left an unanticipated hole in our staffing,” Quigley stated, “we feel fortunate to have found someone with Mariella’s overall business experience and first-hand understanding of customer service to join our family.”
Prior to joining our Chamber, Mastromauro worked at Automatic Data Processing (ADP) in Elk Grove Village since 1989 as a Client Services Representative first and then as a Project Service Specialist. Her job background includes work as a Bookkeeper at American National Bank (1987-89).

APPLETON, Wis. (November 2, 2018) - The Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce and presenting sponsor, Bank First, will honor the 2018 Pinnacle Award recipients at the Pinnacle Awards Gala on Thursday, November 15 at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. The annual awards recognize individuals who embrace principled leadership, strategic thinking, balanced workplace values and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence. These individuals have a unique blend of vision, energy, perseverance and skill and have demonstrated outstanding achievements in operating businesses as well as leadership in the community.
This year’s event will feature time for registration and socializing prior to the awards ceremony in the Thrivent Financial Hall at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. A reception will follow the awards ceremony in the Main Lobby with entertainment by The Jazz Orgy. The raffle drawings will occur at 7:30 PM in the Main Lobby. 2 SW Virginia congressmen honored by chamber of commerce groups
The Roanoke Regional Chamber, Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce and U.S. Chamber of Commerce gave two Southwest Virginia congressmen an award for their support for pro-growth policies in the first session of the 115th Congress.
Congressman Bob Goodlatte and Congressman Morgan Griffith were given the Spirit of Enterprise Award Friday.
The U.S. Chamber’s Spirit of Enterprise Award is given annually to members of Congress based on their votes on critical business legislation as outlined in the Chamber’s How They Voted scorecard.
Members who supported the Chamber’s position on at least 70 percent of those votes qualify to get the award.
The U.S. Chamber recognized 249 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and 48 members of the U.S. Senate in March with the Spirit of Enterprise Award.
