Chamber Names New Executive Director
The Traverse City Area Chamber of
Commerce named its new executive director Tuesday.
Whitney Waara - a Traverse City resident
the Chamber says has an "extensive background in operational management,
business consulting, and public broadcasting" - was introduced to the
organization's board of directors Tuesday morning. She will join the staff full-time
in early September.
“This is a dream opportunity for me to
be able to work in my own backyard and help our region thrive,” Waara says.
“Our region has so many incredible assets and great supporters, and I’m looking
forward to collaborating with our business community to help make this place
even better for all of us.”
Waara's appointment was made by outgoing
CEO Doug Luciani of TraverseCONNECT, the parent organization of the Chamber.
She was one of two finalists who was interviewed and made it through a search
process that began in June. Waara earned an MBA in marketing from the Kent
State University School of Management, and holds an undergraduate degree from
Kalamazoo College, where she studied business and economics. She launched her
professional career in Washington, D.C., where she worked as a consultant for
Arthur Anderson, LLP, Sprint and the US Postal Service. She also owned and
operated a USDA-certified organic produce farm.
From 2004-14, Waara worked for the
Corporation for Public Broadcasting in various management roles. After
relocating to northern Michigan in 2014, she spent more than a year as
Executive Director of the Land Information Access Association (LIAA). Most
recently, she was the senior director of operations for Ask Big Questions based
in Evanston, Ill.
“Whitney brings a wealth of relevant
experience to the Chamber executive director position and a passion for the
community that will help her hit the ground running and be successful,"
Luciani says. “Her extensive background in communications, planning and
organizational development will be a tremendous asset both to the Chamber and
its diverse and dynamic members.”
Locally, Waara has served on the Grand
Traverse County Parks and Recreation Commission and as a volunteer at Interlochen
Public Radio and the Glenn Loomis Montessori school. She and husband Sam
Augusta have three young sons. Read more: The

Vacant for a decade, Owosso Armory
has been revamped into work space #redesign
A little more than a century after it was built, the Owosso Armory
is serving a new purpose.
Meetings take place on the stage where Alice Cooper and Jerry Lee
Lewis once performed. People work on gym floors where soldiers used to work
out.
For decades, the space acted as a training center for the National
Guard and a venue for sporting events, concerts and community gatherings. After
sitting unused for about a decade, the building is back in operation as the
home for local businesses.
The building is a mix of old and new. There's new carpeting
abutting century-old door frames. Original banisters on the staircases mirror
new ones on the adjacent walls. The gymnasium's stage is now a conference room
with glass windows.
“We tried to save as much of the character of the original
building as we could,” said Jeff Deason, the president and CEO for the
Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber spearheaded the $5.5 million redevelopment project and
agreed to buy the building from the Michigan Department of Military &
Veteran Affairs in 2013.
The project was paid for through a combination of tax credits,
grants and loans, Deason said. Construction on the 36,000-square-foot building
started in spring 2017.
"I don't think people really believed it until they saw the
construction going on," Deason said. "People got really interested at
that point." said.
Today, colorful paintings of rams from Michigan ArtShare hang on
the walls in the entry of the building. A balcony in the back of the building
overlooks the Shiawassee River. Read more: Lansing

Brooks Patterson says regional CEO group has
Detroit agenda, is poaching county business
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson is calling out a
regional CEO group following a closed door meeting Thursday with county chamber
directors.
Patterson invited chamber directors from around the county to his
Waterford office to warn them of a regional CEO group, allegedly, attempting to
“snatch up” businesses, and business leads, from the county for the sake of
rebuilding Detroit. He wrote a letter July 26 inviting the chamber directors to
attend.
In that letter, Patterson described the group as “self-appointed
saviors” working to direct business investments to the City of Detroit and one
that will “have no hesitation about coming into your community” to steal
business leads.
DTE Energy CEO Gerry Anderson, who leads the 23-member regional
CEO group, said a search is underway for a CEO to lead a nonprofit that will
focus on the marketing and economic development of as well as business
attraction for the 11-county region.
The CEO group was formed at the request of Detroit Regional
Chamber CEO Sandy Baruah two years ago. Earlier this year, the idea to create
this business attraction nonprofit was brought up by group, and chamber, members.
This is the same group that wrote a letter back in April
supporting the bid to place a regional transit proposal on November’s ballot,
an effort that ultimately fell through.
Anderson said he understands Patterson’s passion for his work, but
added that the nonprofit will never engage in assisting a company to relocate
from one part of the region to another.
“Its ethic will be that when one part of the region wins, all in
the region win,” said Anderson and Baruah in a joint statement Thursday
afternoon. “This new entity will be exclusively focused on driving new
businesses from outside the region to locate new jobs within the region.”
They added that the non-profit would follow a “by the region and
for the region” approach that is consistent with best-in class models across
the country.
Joe Bauman, president of the Birmingham-Bloomfield Chamber of
Commerce, attended the Thursday meeting. He supports regionalism and said
chamber members routinely do business across city and county lines to build
successful enterprises.
“While the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber represents members in six
communities in Oakland County including Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills,
Bloomfield Township, Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms and Franklin, we strongly
support economic development throughout Southeast Michigan,” said Bauman. “A
regional approach to business attraction and retention remains the best way to
benefit all of our 700-plus members.”
Representatives from chambers in Auburn Hills, Berkley, Clarkston,
Clawson, Ferndale, West Bloomfield, Holly, Madison Heights, Orion Township,
Rochester, Royal Oak, Southfield, Troy and Waterford also attended.
Anderson said Thursday morning that “we are all after the same
goal” and that the entire region benefits when investment and jobs come from
outside Michigan and the country to southeast Michigan.
“The Detroit Regional Chamber, the Regional CEO Group and all the
county leadership in Southeast Michigan can make a positive difference when we
align and create incremental, good paying jobs for the 11 County region,” he
said. The

MBA: Taking Care of Business!
It’s been a busy and exciting time at the Midland Business Alliance
(MBA). While you’re taking care of your business, we’ve been busy working to
better take care of you! With the Midland Area Chamber of Commerce, Midland
Tomorrow, CBM Services, MITCON and the Innovation Center, the MBA can help
businesses of every size, at every stage. But how do you bring together
organizations?
This has been done through a whole lot of listening. Sarah Opperman was
named the MBA’s Interim CEO earlier this year and immediately dove in to
“listening sessions” with businesses throughout the community. Earlier this
summer, the Boards of Directors from every MBA division met for a half-day
retreat to dive deep into what Midland’s business community needs. This session
yielded a lot of great feedback and direction.
As a result, we have developed a new, expanded Mission, Vision and Value
Proposition for all of us who represent the MBA.
Mission: To support the attraction, development and growth of businesses
throughout Midland County by providing an integrated portfolio of tools and
resources.
Vision: The MBA leads our business community with a unified voice,
creating an environment where business and the community prosper.
Value Proposition: The MBA is Midland’s fully integrated business hub,
serving a vibrant community in which people, industry and businesses prosper.
We are the voice for more than 3,000 businesses, from start-ups to Fortune 500
companies. The MBA is strategically aligned, helping businesses to:
· Boost innovation and entrepreneurship
· Attract business and talent
· Promote retention and expansion
· Advocate for business
· Provide comprehensive business services
· Convene resources to advance business/community priorities
We’re using this inspiring and inclusive foundation to build our plans
and programs for 2019 and beyond. Stay tuned for more information about the
MBA’s new strategic plan and how that will guide our programming. Spoiler
alert: Things are going to be better than ever!

In
its seventh year held in Manistee, hosted by the Manistee Area
Chamber of Commerce and presented by Jeff Reau with Edward

after the races, which were deemed successful last year.

Michigan's Lakeshore Art Festival
ranked No. 11 nationally
Muskegon's Lakeshore Art Festival is on a list of the top
200 craft shows in the United States for the third year in a row, this time
coming in at No. 11.
It is the highest ranking the 6-year-old event has attained on the list compiled by Sunshine Artist Magazine. The list determines the most profitable fine art and craft festivals based on the sales performances of exhibitors who subscribe to the magazine.
The No. 11 rank based on the performance of the 2017 festival was released on Tuesday, Aug. 7.
The festival first appeared on the list in 2015 at No. 83. In 2016, it was ranked No. 27.
The two-day July event fills downtown Muskegon with guests who watch street performers, contribute to community art and browse the craft and fine art booths.
In 2017, the festival had a beer garden for the first time. Engagement efforts that year included professional chalk designs, Community Canvas, a live kayak painting, Student Art Showcase, Chalk the Walk and Color Muskegon.
In 2013, the festival was established when the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce took on the task of reinventing the former Art in the Park event.
"Our goal when reinventing the art festival was to focus on quality exhibitors that appealed to local and regional guests," said Carla Flanders, Lakeshore Art Festival director. "Based on survey results and national recognition, we are doing just that. Being one of Sunshine Artist Magazine's 200 Best signifies that the artists are happy with the event and that guests are buying their unique handmade products. It's the best of both worlds."
This year marked a record number of exhibitor applicants resulting in the extension of the festival footprint by two streets. The 2018 event had three new features: the Kayak Sculpture Project, The Door Project and the Emerging Authors Tent. Read more:M LIVE
