Muskegon-area employers say
workforce shortage is No. 1 challenge
After a full year of low unemployment rates in Muskegon County
during 2017, local businesses say their top concern is finding qualified
workers.
At the end of 2017, 68 percent of businesses surveyed by
the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce said that an
apparent workforce shortage was their No. 1 concern going
into 2018, according to a news release.
"It is great to have a strong economy, yet now we must work to
develop local talent and recruit new talent to the community,"
said Cindy Larsen, Chamber president.
Unemployment rates in the county during 2017 ranged from a low of 3.9
percent in April to a high of 6.2 percent in July.
Economists consider 2-7 percent unemployment to be full employment,
meaning that there will always be some people unemployed as they move to new
places or switch jobs or their skill set doesn't match up with open
positions.
The Chamber will make an effort to support workforce training
programs during 2018, Larsen said. Activities that
support partnerships between businesses and
education also will be a high priority.
One way that businesses along the lakeshore are combating the shortage
is with skilled trades training. The Skilled
Trades Training Fund, administered by the Michigan Talent
Investment Agency, recently awarded grants to more than 40
Muskegon-area companies for a combined $1.5 million, which is enough
to train about 1,500 employees. Read more: M

Southwest Indiana Chamber names new CEO
The
Southwest Indiana Chamber Board of Directors Thursday announced the hiring of
Tara Barney as president & CEO.
Barney

The Quad Cities metropolitan area consists of a region comprised of Clinton,

Barney

In
Evansville, she replaces Christy Gillenwater, who left to lead the chamber in
Chattanooga, Tennessee.
“I
am excited to move to Evansville and begin this next phase of my career in
serving such a well-established Chamber and a vibrant community that is
southwest Indiana,” Barney said in a news release issued by the local
chamber.
“The
Southwest Indiana Chamber is clearly an extremely well-run organization,
having recently won Chamber of the Year nationally in 2016, and I’m proud to
join the talented and capable staff. I look forward to getting to know all of
our members to best serve their business needs and continue to build upon the
prosperity and vision of this local economy.”
In
Quad Cities, Barney led a chamber with a $6 million budget that worked
effectively with more than 30,000 local businesses. Read more: Courier-Press

I-69 Thumb Region Issues RFP for Connecting Workers to Jobs
The
I-69 Thumb Region is seeking proposals for ways to improve the regional
workforce supply in 2018 and beyond.
Specifically,
the Request for Proposal (RFP) should address one of two key areas:
A
$38,000 grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corp. will be used by
the partnership to fund the winning proposals.
The RFP
builds on the momentum of the recent I-69 Thumb Region Talent Forum, which
was held Jan. 24 to address workforce supply issues, as many employers in the
I-69 Thumb Region are in a hiring mode.
“We
want to connect more workers to good paying jobs that are available in our
region,” said Janice Karcher, Senior Vice President of Economic Development
at the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce. “Openings are occurring in
the skilled trades, supervisory, and technician levels in various industries
as older employees near retirement.
“The
Thumb Region partners are seeking the best thinking and strategies on how we
can close this gap for the benefit of our local employers and workers.”
Proposals
are due Feb. 13 by 12 p.m. (noon).
A
conference call for those with questions on the RFP and/or potential projects
will be held Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. Complete details about the RFP and conference
call are available online at I-69ThumbRegion.org/talent-rfp.
The
I-69 Thumb Region is a partnership of the Flint & Genesee Chamber of
Commerce, Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership, Lapeer Development
Corporation, Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County, Sanilac &
Huron County Economic Development Corporation and Tuscola County Economic
Development Corporation.

Wisconsin Assembly Republicans move
bill to allow business associations to self-insure
A
proposal that could shake up Wisconsin’s health care market is up for a vote in
the Assembly Tuesday less than two weeks after being introduced.
The bill
would allow businesses in the same chamber of commerce or industry association
to join together and pay directly for their employee health care costs, similar
to how many large employers self-insure as a way to manage costs.
Currently,
businesses can band together to buy health insurance, but bill author Rep.
Shannon Zimmerman, R-River Falls, said skyrocketing health care costs for
families and businesses necessitates a new way for employers to find cost
savings through what are known as association health plans.
Small
businesses pay 8 percent to 18 percent more than large companies for the same
coverage, Zimmerman said, citing a report from the National Conference of State
Legislatures.
“Health
care is one of the most important issues facing Americans today,” Zimmerman
said in testimony before the Assembly Committee on Health last week. “If the
law is working for big businesses and their employees, then I believe the same
advantage should be given to smaller businesses.” Read more: Madison

Pat Convery
Named Howell Chamber's 2017 Citizen Of The Year
Pat Convery, a longtime member of the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce, has been named the organization’s 2017 Citizen of the Year.
2016’s recipient,
Patti Griffith, presented the award to Convery at the Chamber’s 61st annual
Citizen of the Year dinner on Thursday. The event was held at Cleary University
in Genoa Township. Cleary’s Johnson Center was full of community members and
leaders, many of whom have met, interacted, or worked with Convery through her
numerous roles.
Convery has been
with the chamber for 28 years and has held leadership positions in a number of
local organizations. The Hartland resident is the only chamber professional to
receive the Michigan Chamber Professional Award twice since its inception. Still,
she remains humble, saying it is a tremendous honor to serve with people of
such a high caliber.
Convery says she
was shocked when she realized she had been chosen as Citizen of the Year,
adding that she attended a “sham meeting” held by past recipients who fooled
her into thinking someone else had been chosen. Griffith began the presentation
with a slideshow of clues as to who the 2017 winner might be. Convery says she
noticed she had a lot in common with the recipient based on those clues. Once she
figured it out, she started to cry. Convery feels Livingston County is a
passionate community filled with people who work hard to make it so and says
it’s an honor to even be considered as Citizen of the Year.
A number of
awards were also handed out prior to the citizen announcement, including
investment and prosperity awards to Adam Merkel Restaurants, Chem-Trend Limited
Partnership, Thai Summit America Corporation, and TG Fluid Systems.
Rick Resinger and
Brandi Tambasco were recognized for their leadership and professionalism.
The Howell Police
Department, Livingston Educational Service Agency, and the Howell Area Parks
and Recreation Authority were also awarded for their community impact. Read

Valpo Chamber: Envision the Future
2018
Wednesday, March 14, 2018 7:30 AM -
2:30 PM CST
Porter County Expo Center
215 E Division Rd
Valparaiso, IN 46383
The Valpo Chamber Envision the
Future Committee is planning the 2017 event for Porter County
eight-grade students. This
annual program is scheduled for March 14, 2017, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
at the Porter County Expo Center.
Business Volunteers are extremely
important to this program. Volunteers will assist students as they learn
how to live within their means
while enjoying their chosen career. Envision the Future is an opportunity
for students to realize exactly how
much money it will take to pay for housing, utilities, a vehicle, insurance,
food, clothing, and childcare;
while trying to have enough money leftover for the “extras” in life.
Why should you volunteer?
What’s in it for you?
- Area 8th graders are the future
pool of employees and consumers. The better
choices they make for their
education, the better the employment pool becomes
for the local business community.
- Networking opportunities with
several business volunteers in attendance.
- Envision the Future is a great
way to impact over 1,000 students in a short
period of time.
Please register for a station of
your choice.

Christian County Chamber of Commerce Announces Fourth Annual Total Resource Campaign
2018 Total Resource Campaign to Kick-Off Monday, February 19
The Christian
County Chamber of Commerce announces the fourth annual Total Resource
Campaign. This six-week revenue-generating effort kicks off Monday,
February 19, 2018 and concludes Friday, March 30. This year, the Total
Resource Campaign has 10 volunteers from various business professions within
the community.
During the
campaign, volunteers introduce businesses to the value of Chamber membership
and encourage current members to utilize the multiple benefits membership
provides. This annual effort provides leadership and financial support
for new and existing programs. Volunteers make it possible to raise
the funds to sustain programs for business development, community improvement
and member services. The funds raised benefit not only the Chamber, but
truly the entire Christian County region.
"The
TRC campaign is the Chamber's effort to secure sponsorships for our many
programs and initiatives so that we can keep working on behalf of our business
community. We greatly appreciate the volunteers who give their time
to support the chamber's work and the many businesses who participate and
sponsor our efforts," said Kelli Pendleton, Christian County Chamber of
Commerce President & CEO. "Our chamber team works hard in areas of
business advocacy, workforce & education, supporting Fort Campbell and many
more. Thank you to everyone who champions our cause."
The
all-volunteer Campaign consists of more than 500 sponsorships. The TRC
offers excellent exposure for companies both at Chamber events and within our
signature publications.

spotlight: Grand Rapids Area Chamber probes local business
The Grand Rapids Area Chamber recently released the results of its annual government affairs survey of member businesses. The survey results show that workforce and talent issues continue to rank as top priorities for employers, with parking availability also surfacing as an issue of concern.
“We use
this survey as an opportunity each year to see where our members are seeing
some of their biggest obstacles and opportunities,” said Joshua Lunger,
director of government affairs at the Grand Rapids Area Chamber. “It’s an
opportunity for us to investigate further into issues that we might not have
been spending as much time on.”
The survey
revealed business sentiment remains positive, with 96 percent of employers
reporting a favorable or very favorable perception of the business climate in
West Michigan. The biggest challenge, according to respondents, is finding
qualified candidates to hire.
“We’re
growing and creating jobs, but we don’t have enough folks to fill them,” said
Lunger. “80 percent of companies reporting talent shortages say the cause is
due to consistent business growth and job creation, rather than hiring to fill
an existing slot,” he added. “This is actually a good problem to have.”
To address
the talent shortage, Lunger says the chamber is focused on promoting skilled
trades in public schools and through the Skilled Trades Training Fund, a
statewide grant for employers, as well as encouraging greater investment in
early childhood education.
“Talent and
education policy is a very long game,” said Lunger. “You have to look at the
whole picture, from access to high-quality childcare all the way to what’s in
the curriculums of the schools.”
Another
issue that emerged for the second year in a row was access to parking, with 28
percent describing it as a significant challenge. To address these concerns,
Lunger says the chamber is advocating for increased supply.
“We had a
group of members that met for a few months and came up with an eight-point parking
and mobility plan,” he said. “Whether it’s parking a little further out and
using a high-frequency transit service or improving our downtown circular, we
want employers to have a whole list of options for how their employees can get
to work.”
Lunger says
that, while the survey revealed a consistently positive outlook among
employers, the concerns raised regarding talent shows the business community
can’t afford to become complacent.
“We titled
the report: ‘Businesses like what they see, but addressing talent is critical
to continued growth,’ and we think that really sums it up,” he said. “We have a
lot of positives, but we can’t sleep on this talent issue. We need to put it
front-and-center, and I think that’s true for most places in the country right
now that are growing.” Source: ACCE
