Good morning #Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!

Chamber Executive Ongoing Education Weekly New Idea: Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams - by Matthew Walker

The first sleep book by a leading scientific expert—Professor Matthew Walker, Director of UC Berkeley’s Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab—reveals his groundbreaking exploration of sleep, explaining how we can harness its transformative power to change our lives for the better.

Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life—eating, drinking, and reproducing—the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

An explosion of scientific discoveries in the last twenty years has shed new light on this fundamental aspect of our lives. Now, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert Matthew Walker gives us a new understanding of the vital importance of sleep and dreaming. Within the brain, sleep enriches our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions. It recalibrates our emotions, restocks our immune system, fine-tunes our metabolism, and regulates our appetite. Dreaming mollifies painful memories and creates a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge to inspire creativity.

Walker answers important questions about sleep: how do caffeine and alcohol affect sleep? What really happens during REM sleep? Why do our sleep patterns change across a lifetime? How do common sleep aids affect us and can they do long-term damage? Charting cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs, and synthesizing decades of research and clinical practice, Walker explains how we can harness sleep to improve learning, mood, and energy levels; regulate hormones; prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes; slow the effects of aging; increase longevity; enhance the education and lifespan of our children, and boost the efficiency, success, and productivity of our businesses. Clear-eyed, fascinating, and accessible, Why We Sleep is a crucial and illuminating book. More information: Amazon

Peninsula Chamber Welcomes New CEO and Says Good-bye to Retiring CEO

On March 1, 2018, Robert S. McKenna takes the helm as the President/CEO of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. He was selected from over 185 applicants from across the country. A Newport News resident, Bob is a retired U.S. Navy Captain and graduate of the Unites States Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point, NY. He served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years as a Surface Warfare Officer with many deployments and senior command positions.
Dan Chenoweth, Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors said, “Bob’s extensive leadership experience, at the highest level, is what separated him from all the other applicants. We wanted someone who can continue our focus on regional collaborative leadership and who has a proven record of team building”.

Since his retirement from the U.S. Navy, Bob he has worked as a government contractor supporting the US Navy, and as a U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs community liaison on the Peninsula, working to enhance educational and employment opportunities for transitioning service members and their families. He has served on the Secretary of Veteran and Defense Affairs’ Peninsula Local Planning Group for Transitioning Services members, coordinated by the Peninsula Chamber for then-Secretary John Harvey.

Bob is married, and he and his family reside in Newport News where he is active in coaching youth athletic programs.

Retiring Chamber CEO Mike Kuhns, who departs on March 31st, said, “Bob will be able to hit the ground running and lead the Chamber to the next level. He is an engaging leader who understands the impact of collaboration. What more could the Chamber ask for?”.

Kuhns and McKenna will work together for the month of March. Kuhns will remain in Newport News and continue his engagement with the Thomas Nelson Community College Board as Vice Chair; HRIC’s Foundation for Innovation, and supportive organizations for the Newport News Fire Department.More information: Jaime Parrish - Media and Program Coordinator, Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce - Tel. Your Future LIVE! will Provide Students with an Interactive Career Exploration and Hiring Event

Expanded event for area middle and high school students; job fair addition will welcome students, parents and community jobseekers

The Fox Cities Chamber is hosting its annual career expo at the new Fox Cities Exhibition Center in downtown Appleton to provide area students with an interactive program to explore careers available in the Fox Cities and beyond. The 12-year event, traditionally delivered in a one-day format, has been expanded to two full days in March allowing middle school students, high school students, parents and the community to participate in various aspects.

On the first day of the event, Wednesday, March 14, 8th grade students from 21 area middle schools will visit career zones encompassing organizations from similarly grouped career clusters based on knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a particular area. Over 70 businesses will engage in interactive conversations about their careers with local 8th graders helping to prepare the students as they transition into high school and continue their career exploration.

New this year, the second day of Your Future LIVE!, Thursday, March 15, will welcome high school sophomore through senior students from 12 area high schools to experience a conference format that focuses on students making meaningful connections with local employers. Students will learn about career opportunities at area employers such as career exploration (job shadows, informational interviews and business hosted events), career path opportunities (internships and youth apprenticeships) and employment (part-time or direct entry full-time). These opportunities will be posted on the Chamber’s Your Future Fox Cities website, allowing students to identify and apply for career opportunities during and after the event.

Throughout the second day, high schoolers will be able to attend several breakout sessions facilitated by employers, including a financial-focused presentation by Verve Credit Union on the first paycheck or a personal brand presentation by West. These dynamic presentations will provide insight for students as they continue to develop their academic and career plans helping to realize their future career paths to success beyond school.

A public job fair will complete the second day of the event where participating businesses will promote direct entry employment opportunities for all job seekers. The community, including parents and students, are welcome to attend from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. on March 15 at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center.

“We continue to focus on building our long-term workforce while educating our students on the opportunities available in the Fox Cities to prepare them for future jobs. Being involved in K-12 curriculum planning, career exploration and connecting students to opportunities will help us prepare students and fill the jobs of the future,” shared Fox Cities Chamber President/CEO Bob Mundt. “Your Future LIVE! is a great opportunity for our students to connect with area businesses to explore career opportunities in our community. This two-day event provides a platform for our businesses to get in front of their future workforce.”

Lee County supervisors move to issue bond debt for industrial park

Lee County’s Board of Supervisors has given the final green-light to issue $7.3 million in bond debt, with an eye toward using about half that amount within a few months time to purchase land intended for use as an industrial park.
In early February, supervisors approved a plan to buy about 500 acres of land located in west Tupelo, just north of state Mississippi Highway 6/U.S. Highway 278. That purchase will cost the county a little more than $3 million.
Those 500 acres are part of a larger site of approximately 1,000 acres, and Lee County holds a five-year purchase option on the remaining property.
The Community Development Foundation has for years worked on plans to develop that property into an industrial park that could potentially attract technology firms, automobile parts suppliers or other heavy industry.
Chancery Clerk Bill Benson said the bond authorization unanimously approved Monday morning will remain good for two years. Since county authorities only plan to issue about half the authorized bond debt, the remaining bonds that legally could be issued under Monday’s action may be needed later if the county moves to exercise its purchase option.
