Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber to host Community Leadership Breakfast

Matt Wollack knows all about second chances.

His father, Robert E. Wollack, is founder of Wolverine Human Services, one of Michigan’s largest nonprofits in providing care and guidance for delinquent youths. The organization has helped hundreds of children and their families over the past 30 years.

That’s his present life, but there’s also his past. Robert Wollack once served with the New York Police Department, where he fell into a life of snorting cocaine, shaking down drug dealers and rubbing elbows with the mafia. He was eventually convicted on drug trafficking charges and, in 1963, was sentenced to serve 10 years at a federal prison in Milan.

“He rehabilitated himself in prison,” Wollack said of his dad. “He ended up serving three years and, when he got out, he was committed to making a better life for himself.”

Wollack, who serves as vice president of strategic development for Wolverine Human Services, plans to share his father’s story at the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber’s Community Leadership Breakfast, 8-10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the Village Club, 190 E. Long Lake Road, in Bloomfield Hills.

C.J. Felton, director of development for the Community Housing Network, and Kimberly Wyman, founder and executive director of Adopt More, are the two other featured speakers at the breakfast. Tickets for the breakfast are still available and can be purchased at the door at www.bbcc.com.
“Each of these speakers has an inspiring story to share,” chamber president Joe Bauman said. “We’re hoping our audience members will listen to these stories and perhaps find new ways to contribute to their communities and help make a positive difference.”

Robert Wollack went on to earn a master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan and even wrote a book about his experiences, “They Will Be Victors: The Remarkable Story of One Man’s Passion for Second Chances.” His son could not be prouder.

“We now have eight social workers in our family,” Wollack said. “Helping others is the greatest feeling in the world.” Read more: Hometown Life

Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce: GovCon Series: Open Source Intelligence in an Information-Saturated World

Thursday, November 16
8:00 - 10:00 am

Open source information, especially social media, has exploded in scale in the last ten years, overwhelming the ability of governments and companies to collect, process, and most importantly, derive meaning and value from the data. We have assembled a panel of government, private sector, and intelligence contractor experts to discuss the legal, political, and economic dilemmas to these geometric increases in the availability of this information.

About our Panelists

James Mulvenon, General Manager, Special Programs Division, SOS International

James Mulvenon is General Manager of SOS International’s Special Programs Division, where he has recruited and trained a team of nearly forty Chinese, Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Pashto, Urdu, Russian, and Korean linguist-analysts performing research and analysis for the US Government. A Chinese linguist by training, he is a leading international expert on Chinese cyber, technology transfer, espionage, and military issues. Dr. Mulvenon received his B.A. in China Studies from the University of Michigan, studied Communist Party History at Fudan University in Shanghai, and received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles. His dissertation, published by ME Sharpe in 2001 under the title Soldiers of Fortune, details the rise and fall of the Chinese military’s international business empire. In 2013 he co-authored Chinese Industrial Espionage, which is the first full account of the complete range of China’s efforts to illicitly acquire foreign technology. Dr. Mulvenon is regularly invited to address senior government and commercial audiences on China and cyber topics, and his comments have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and other international media outlets.

Adam Meyers, Vice-President, Intelligence, Crowdstrike

Adam Meyers is a recognized expert in the security and intelligence communities. With more than 15 years of experience in the security space, Adam has extensive experience building and leading intelligence practices in both the public and private sector. Adam is a founding employee and VP of Intelligence at CrowdStrike Inc., a global provider of security technology and services focused on identifying advanced threats and targeted attacks. A sought-after thought-leader, Adam conducts speaking engagements and training classes around the world on the topics of threat intelligence, reverse engineering, and data breach investigations. Adam earned a Bachelors of Arts degree from the George Washington University where he studied Political Science, and Computer Science.

Paul Triolo, Practice Head, Geotechnology, Eurasia Group

Paul S. Triolo leads the firm's newest practice, focusing on global technology policy issues, cyber-security, internet governance, ICT regulatory issues, and emerging areas such as automation, AI/Big Data, ambient intelligence, and fintech. He is building a cross-issue and cross-regional team that helps clients understand and assess the risk generated by the complex intersection of politics, technology innovation, security threats, and the changing global regulatory environment. Prior to joining Eurasia Group, Paul served in senior positions within the US government for more than 25 years, focusing primarily on China's rise as a science and technology (S&T) and cyber power. He provided analytic support to the president and senior policymakers, and was the lead drafter for a number of widely acclaimed national estimates on China S&T innovation and industrial policies, as well as cyber-space issues. Paul's technical background, including a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Penn State University and work experience in Silicon Valley, along with his extensive work on internet governance and policy issues in government, have prepared him to tackle the substantial challenges companies will face in cyber-space.

William Hannas, Senior Executive, US Government

William C. Hannas has an MA from the University of Chicago in Chinese and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in Asian languages. He served with the US Navy and Joint Special Operations Command, taught at Georgetown University, and holds a senior executive position in a component of the US federal government. Paducah playing host to young professionals

Paducah is hosting young professionals from several states in the YP Unite Summit today at the Julian Carroll Convention Center.

This is the first time the multi-state, annual event is being held in Paducah, according to Sandra Wilson, Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce president.

"This is the first time it's been held outside of Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati," Wilson said. "We've got about 150 people registered."

Today's schedule includes addresses from Paducah entrepreneurs Ed and Meagan Musselman; Allison Ball, Kentucky treasurer; Asa James Swan, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet chief of staff; Steve Powless, chief executive officer of Computer Services, Inc.; and George Wilson, Paducah native and former professional football player.

The YP Unite Summit is an annual gathering of young professional groups and individuals from Kentucky and five surrounding states with the goal of sharing best practices and leadership development. It began in 2013 in Frankfort.

The summit kicked off Thursday night with a reception at The 1857 Hotel, followed by a trolley tour of points of interest around Paducah.

In addition to being of interest to the Paducah chamber's young professional group, hosting the summit is also an opportunity to attract other millennials to the area, Sandra Wilson said.

"We're really excited to have the opportunity to host and for our group to showcase themselves ... and their community," she said.

Mayor Brandi Harless was not able to attend but recorded a message to summit participants, Wilson said.

"Her message included talking to them about our community and that she hopes they find Paducah to be a creative city, very inviting, and a place they will want to visit or consider moving to." Read more: Paducah Sun

Taste of Tupelo getting ready for 11th annual show

Every available space has been reserved for next week’s 11th annual Taste of Tupelo, and another record crowd is expected to fill the BancorpSouth Arena.

Presented by Barnes Crossing Auto Group, this year’s Taste of Tupelo business expo will be held Nov. 16 and will feature 108 businesses providing demonstrations, complimentary samples and information about themselves.

In addition to dozens of local restaurants, caterers, and bakeries, the Taste of Tupelo will feature exhibitors from various industries including healthcare, banking, manufacturing, retail, educational institutions and more.

“We have more food booths than ever,” said Mallory Lawson of the Community Development Foundation, which helps sponsor the event.
Taste of Tupelo is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is open to the public for those 21 and older.

Cost is $10 for CDF members and $20 for non-members. Tickets for the event can be bought at the CDF office or at the door.

Elizabeth Gable, co-owner of Endville Bakery and Catering, has participated for several years at the Taste of Tupelo. She and her husband, David, opened Endville in 2011.

She said the event is a great time to expand her network, not only seeing other business owners, but spreading the word about her business to potential customers.

“We get to visit with our current customers, we get a chance to meet new customers, and we just get to see a lot of people and have a fun night out,” she said.
