Candlelight Christmas, Creche Lighting Return To Plainfield

The events coincide with Small Business Saturday.

The holiday season will officially arrive in Plainfield with the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Candlelight Christmas event, set for 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25. The event coincides with the Plainfield Lions Club's 66th annual creche lighting at Plymouth Congregational Church, 24022 W. Lockport St.
Participating downtown businesses will offer pictures with Santa, sleigh rides, crafts, dance performances, letters to Santa and more. The event coincides with Small Business Saturday, a movement created to offset the hype of Black Friday by encouraging shoppers to patronize small local businesses.
The creche lighting begins with an indoor Christmas carol sing-a-long at 6:45 p.m., followed by the lighting outside Plymouth Congregational at 8 p.m. According to the church, "the program will include traditional hymns, the Christmas story from the Scriptures, and music from our special guest artists," including the Spectrum Youth Singers, directed by Oksana Rodak, and the Plainfield East High School Madrigal Singers in colorful Renaissance costumes, directed by Alexandria Kordele.

Community members are invited to gather near the life-size Nativity scene, which will be illuminated as as "Silent Night' is sung by all. Read more: Patch

2nd Annual Indiana Technology & Innovation Policy Summit

December 1 - 8:00 am - 1:30 pm

Join the Indiana Technology & Innovation Council to discuss key policy priorities for the upcoming legislative session that impact technology and innovation-driven businesses in Indiana.

Influential business, legislative leaders and members of the governor’s administration will be participating.

Agenda

2nd Annual Indiana Technology & Innovation Policy Summit
December 1, 2017
Conrad Hotel, Indianapolis
8:00 a.m. Registration and Continental Breakfast
8:30 a.m. Welcome and Opening Comments
Mark Lawrance, Vice President, Engagement and Innovation Policy, Indiana Chamber
John McDonald, Chairman, Indiana Technology and Innovation Policy Committee
8:45 a.m. Smart Cities, Smart State
Indiana has been a leader in the development of data analytics and creating data-driven
policy decisions. The state can play a role with the development and adoption of an
executable strategy that encourages increased adoption of the Internet of Things and big data
analytics to improve public safety, transportation, health and the criminal justice system. The
state can enable collaborative innovation by bringing together stakeholders to determine how
its digital assets can best be applied for the public good.
Mayor Scott Fadness, Fishers
9:15 a.m. Software-as-a-Service
Indiana ranks second in software job growth, outpacing the national average by 32%. Efforts
are needed to clarify the law regarding taxation of Software as a Service (SaaS) and other
cloud-based services, and tax treatment that compares favorably to other states is essential.
9:45 a.m. Certified Tech Parks
The Certified Technology Parks (CTP) program was created as a tool to support the attraction
and growth of high-technology business in Indiana and promote technology transfer
opportunities. Designation as a CTP allows for the local recapture of certain state and local
tax revenue that can be invested in the development of the CTP. At their best, technology
parks can serve to aggregate resources and incubate high-tech entrepreneurial enterprises,
fostering start-ups and aiding their growth through support, resources and collaboration. This
helps to create new businesses and new jobs, typically in technology-driven sectors
characterized by high skills and wages, contributing to economic growth and the tax base.
Ted Baker, Executive Director, Muncie Innovation Connector and Karl LaPan, CEO and
Executive Director, Northeast Indiana Innovation Center
10:15 a.m. Expanding Venture Capital and Investment Capital
Indiana needs to encourage development opportunities and additional capital investment in
businesses outside of our traditional industrial base. Providing a targeted tax credit against
losses encourages investors to assume a higher risk factor for emerging businesses. Invested
well, the rewards should pay off in the long term for new businesses, small business growth
and Indiana’s economic future.
Larry Gigerich, Executive Managing Director, Ginovus
10:45 a.m. Autonomous Vehicles
Autonomous vehicles will soon be a part of our daily lives and how we move people and
goods. Autonomous vehicles are being actively tested and used daily in other parts of the
county and world. Just as digital communication, speech-to-text software and other
technological marvels have become part of our daily lives, so will autonomous vehicles. Some
major companies are targeting production as early as 2020.
Rep. Ed Soliday, Indiana House of Representatives
11:15 a.m. Data Center Strategy
In the technology world, data centers are critical components of and are today’s factories of
technology infrastructure for businesses. For Indiana to be well positioned for technologybased
economic development opportunities, the state needs to make fundamental changes to
support the attraction of data center facilities.
Rich Carlton, President and COO, Data Realty
11:45 a.m. Call to Action
Indiana Business for Responsive Government (IBRG) is the Indiana Chamber's non-partisan
political action committee. IBRG is the state’s largest, most sophisticated and most successful
political action committee for electing pro-business legislators to the Indiana General
Assembly. Members and coalition partners can use our grassroots network to get involved in
key legislative efforts and to effectively contact state legislators, becoming advocates for
economic growth and prosperity issues.
Jeff Brantley, Vice President, Political Affairs and PAC, Indiana Chamber
12:15 p.m. Policy Summit Luncheon
Keynote presentation by Micah Vincent, Director, Indiana Office of Management and Budget
1:30 p.m. 2nd Annual Indiana Technology & Innovation Policy Summit Adjourns

Baileys Harbor: Adopt a Tree program on the horizon

It’s hard to believe but Thanksgiving is next week and after that, of course, here comes Christmas.

You’ll notice that the Christmas trees are going up around town this week. Once again, the Baileys Harbor Community Association is sponsoring their “Adopt a Tree” decorating contest.

Last year almost 40 trees were adopted by businesses and families.

The only rules are that you decorated the tree by Nov. 27. You can decide on the theme, provide your own lights or use some of the BHCA’s lights and undecorated the trees by New Year’s Day. The trees will all be lit on Dec. 2.

Last year’s winner was a Packer tree decorated by The Harbor Girls. If you would like to get in on the fun, contact the Baileys Harbor Community Association at 920-839-2366. Read more: Green Bay Press-Gazette

Hotels added to the Metro create jobs, more options for guests

New hotels have been constructed in many areas around the Metro.
“Most of it is because of the business,” said Duane O’Neill, the President, and CEO of the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership. “Some type of business community or state government that people are here, some of it is recreational but it’s the uptick in people coming to Jackson in the Jackson area is really high.”
There are hotels under construction from Jackson to Clinton, Flowood, Ridgeland, and Madison. Many other projects have recently been completed, and more are on the way.
Developers of the Homewood Suites in Fondren say one reason to build is because of the hospitals in the area.
“There are six major medical facilities around Fondren,” said Chico Patel, CEO of Heritage Hospitality Group. “We feel like when people come into town, they don’t have a good option of a nice upscale hotel nearby where they can just commute. Being an extended stay hotel, we contacted several hospitals, and there’s a huge demand for multi-night staying in this area, so we feel very confident this hotel is going to perform very well.”
With two new museums opening up next month, O’Neill says that too will help draw more people to the area.

The new hotels aren’t just for housing and attracting guests to the area; they are also creating jobs. Patel’s Fondren project will create 100 to 125 construction jobs and up to 25 jobs when the hotel opens. More information: WJTV

From Frank J. Kenny - For Chamber Professionals: The 3 "Don'ts" of Chamber Member Spotlights

Don't do these things in a chamber member spotlight

Chamber member spotlights are a great way to make your members feel valued. To make the most of them there are several things you will want to avoid:

DON’T write a life history.

Chamber member spotlights should not be a biography. They should have helpful tips, lessons learned, interesting anecdotes, and advice for other members. Your members are more interested in learning this person accomplished along their path to success, not their life history. They will want to know about their business and what they did to make themselves successful and stand out. People want to see members represented that they can look up to and learn from, not read a lengthy biography of the person with no helpful tips for their own business.

DON’T pick a member who is not open to mentoring your newer members.

These spotlights are marketing tools for members’ businesses, but they should also be used as a networking opportunity. People will naturally read them in order to figure out how the spotlighted business has been successful. If you’re going to share an obstacle they’ve overcome, you absolutely must find out if they’re willing to share their celebrity “tricks.” They will be seen as mentors or people who have made it whether they want to or not.
By picking members willing to mentor new members, you are providing a service not just to the person being featured, but to your other members as well. You are introducing them to someone who is willing to teach and mentor them about business.

DON’T feature the same type of business over and over again.

And don’t feature the same type of businessperson, either. You will want to feature businesses and business owners that can relate to all your members on some level. Look for people with interesting backgrounds, business acumen, and those who can add a new or different perspective.
Sharing monthly chamber member spotlights is a great idea as long as you make sure they are not just an ego booster for the member, but rather an inspirational tool for your other members. Writing about business successes, picking people to feature who are willing to give back, and diversifying your member spotlights will make them a must-read section.

Frankfort Area Chamber, Independent retailers are cheery about holiday shopping season
Reports of retail’s demise are greatly exaggerated, local business leaders say.
While Frankfort’s Kmart, Rue21, RadioShack and Office Depot stores all closed — or announced plans to close — their doors this year, Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce President Carmen Inman remains optimistic as the holiday season — critical to a retailer’s bottom line — grows nearer.
“I think Frankfort is pretty strong in local retail,” said Inman, referring to homegrown independent retailers.
Indeed Ann Wingrove, owner of downtown’s Completely Kentucky, says her December sales have been up for the past five years and Completely Kentucky’s sales during the recent Candlelight Tradition festivities are an early indication that 2017 will also be strong.
“This last candlelight was better than last year’s, which was better than the year before that,” Wingrove said.
Over the past 10 years, this year’s Candlelight ranked sixth in terms of gross sales for Completely Kentucky, Wingrove said. Her top five years were from 2010 to 2014.

Across the state, independent retailers are feeling rather cheery about their prospects this holiday season. According to a survey of more than 2,000 independent retailers conducted this fall by the Kentucky Retail Federation, 51 percent anticipate consumer confidence to be the same this holiday shopping season as in 2016.
