Chamber nominees at Tourism Awards: WIGCOT 2022: Rising Star Award Nominees

Katie Carey, Fort Atkinson Area Chamber of Commerce

Katie Carey has been the Tourism Manager for the Fort Atkinson Area Chamber of Commerce for more than two years, as well as a valuable member of the volunteer-based Jefferson County Area Tourism Council (JCATC) since late 2019. She has been the point person for Instagram and has really elevated the brand and position with her fantastic work and photos. She is also a key member of the new weddings subcommittee, which looks to brand Jefferson County as a premier Wisconsin wedding destination by offering luxurious yet affordable weddings with unique venues and prime locations. Katie has always been a contributor to conversations that involve ideas to grow, to connect and ideas to build something new. And Katie is one of those rarities who can take a project and run with it, which is great for volunteer organizations.

Lauren Sackett, Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce

Born and raised in Rhinelander, Lauren Sackett has shown a confidence as Executive Director that has benefited not just the Chamber, but all the tourism organizations in the region. Since becoming the Executive Director of the Chamber in June of 2018, Sackett has served as the treasurer of the Oneida County Tourism Commission and has advocated for increased commitment in tourism investment. Her leadership during the pandemic was unparalleled and many tourism businesses were able to survive because of her work. She partnered with Oneida County Public Health to share information with area businesses, put on listening sessions and informational meetings, and contacted area representatives to keep tourism included in future meetings. Lauren is the perfect blend of local pride, fearless advocate and compassionate peer. She is the missing piece the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce has been waiting for to bring tourism in the Northwooods to the next level.

Diversity, Equity, Accessibility & Inclusion Nominees

Krystal Westfahl, Let’s Minocqua

Under Krystal Westfahl leadership, the Minocqua Chamber of Commerce received $39,550 Joint Effort Marketing (JEM) grant for an Oneida County Research project: Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, inclusion. Krystal is committed to bringing diversity to tourism in the northern parts of the state.

Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce Announces First Intern/Extern Expo

Join the Chamber as we welcome nearly 500 high school and college students to the Fredericksburg Expo Center for our first ever Intern/Extern Expo on April 26th from 9am-5pm. This is a great opportunity for community businesses to interface with the future of our community’s workforce.  Rene Daniels Director of Communications & Community Engagement at Spotsylvania County Public Schools says, "As we prepare the future workforce, events such as the Intern Expo are extremely important. The hands-on experience a student gains from an internship or externship builds student confidence and provides valuable insight of career opportunities."

Businesses are needed for this event to be a success for our future workforce, industries include Aquaculture/Seafood/Commercial, Fishing/Marine, Forestry/Wood Products/Paper, Manufacturing, Distribution/Logistics, Information/Data Centers, Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services.

Rebecca Morris, Internship and Work-Study Counselor for Germanna Community College says, “The Intern Expo will allow our area employers the opportunity to see the vast wealth of potential employees coming from our public school systems and local institutions of higher education. Specifically, Germanna students will be able to showcase what they are learning in their classes and demonstrate their abilities for our local employers.  The Intern Expo will help to solidify our regional partnerships, foster new relationships, and help our community retain great graduates as members of our workforce. These are the connections we need to identify and promote. We’re proud to partner with the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce on this effort and expect great outcomes.”

Participating students have an opportunity to receive a $1,500 scholarship (2 available). Participating businesses include: Mary Washington Healthcare, Fredericksburg Area Museum, LifeCare Medical Transports, Dominion Raceway & Entertainment, Fraser Wood Elements, Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, and many more!

Carley Swaim Walker, Senior Director of Membership & Community Advancement says “The Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce serves as a longstanding voice of the business community. In a July 2021 survey to Chamber members, 45% of respondents indicated that lack of workforce was a top concern for their business. We want to address that top concern by tapping into the talent right here in our school systems; secondary and post-secondary. The intern Expo will allow for ours schools and businesses to come together to build upon our workforce here in the Fredericksburg region. The best of the best in business and student leaders will be represented.  You do not want to miss out on this opportunity!”

This event and pilot program is supported by Go Virginia and sponsored by Rappahannock Electric Cooperative. Other sponsorships and scholarship contributions are still available, contact Carley Swaim Walker at cwalker@fxbgchamber.org to learn more.  To register for this event visit the Chamber website at https://fredericksburgchamber.org/events/workforce-now-intern-extern-fair/

ZaneNet and Schaumburg Business Association: Improving the Health of the Healthcare Industry

Alexandra Jellerette co-founded Zane Networks, LLC (aka ZaneNet) in January 2000, intending to leverage technology to help organizations deliver better patient care through health IT, software applications, technical assistance, telehealth, remote patient monitoring, and work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). She went on to graduate from SBA’s 8(a) Business Development Program; co-founder Luigi Leblanc was an alumnus of the SBA’s Emerging Leaders Initiative (an advanced executive training program involving about 100 hours of classroom work for several weeks). According to Alexandra, the programs “reinforced what we were doing in terms of strategizing, planning, and financing our operations.” She also found value in the networks created through their interactions with fellow participants, as the company has been able to apply for contracting opportunities as part of a team with other Emerging Leaders graduates. Moreover, ZaneNet’s HUBZone and EDWOSB certifications have helped the company qualify for additional set-aside contracts and teaming opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic created havoc across the healthcare industry, putting new pressures on existing systems and structures in ways previously unimaginable. Would ZaneNet be able to address these sudden challenges or succumb to the changing landscape?

Alexandra and Luigi knew they had to act quickly and strategically to navigate this new environment, while still offering the best support possible to their existing clients in the healthcare field. Maintaining the company’s sales revenue suddenly became more important than ever. “The Economic Injury Disaster Loan [EIDL] program and Paycheck Protection Program [PPP] really allowed us, as a small business, to make the necessary investments in our people and technology to grow to the next level,” Alexandra observes. “It allowed us to take risks to develop new methods and systems that have enabled the company to develop in ways that would not have otherwise been possible.” With offices in Washington, D.C. and in Silver Spring, Maryland, the company looks to expand into Washington, D.C.'s Anacostia neighborhood within the coming months. Alexandra is quick to credit the Washington, D.C., SBDC at Howard University for helping guide their expansion into the Washington, D.C. market.

Between the training and networking provided by the SBA, in addition to the SBA-backed loans made available through the EIDL program and PPP, Zane Networks is once again on solid footing. Before becoming an active firm in the 8(a) Business Development Program, the company had a staff of five and generated annual sales of under $1 million. Today, Alexandra and Luigi employ over 30 workers and generate about $3.5 million in sales.

Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a GREAT day!

Schaumburg Business Association promotes Lisa Goranson Gilbert to President

Lisa Gilbert officially takes the “Interim” qualifier off her title as of today. Having served in the role as President since May of this year, Gilbert now ascends to the role in her own right, and she has set a vigorous agenda for the continued growth and prosperity of the 800-company organization. The Schaumburg Business Association’s Board of Directors conducted an executive search to assure a thorough understanding of the competitive landscape. In the end, it was Gilbert’s wealth of technical knowledge and deep portfolio of experience that earned her the final nod.
Beyond her five years of service to the SBA, her previous experience managing not-for-profit organizations is characterized by year-over-year growth and strong advocacy for members. Her experience prior to joining the SBA— nine years in roles progressing to the Director of Membership for the University Club of Chicago—was highlighted by the acquisition and retention of more than 3,400 members and annual growth averaging 10%. Gilbert has also worked with not-for-profit organizations as diverse as the Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre, the Swedish American Museum Center and the Metropolis Performing Arts Center.
During her tenure as SBA’s Vice President of Membership, the organization has grown by more than 30%. The variety of programs offered by the various committees within the SBA has expanded significantly—a reflection of the thriving corporate environment in the greater Schaumburg area. Advocacy has blossomed during this time, as well, with efforts that have engaged agencies at local, national, and global levels.
In addition to her formal training, a master’s degree in arts, entertainment & media management from Columbia College in Chicago, Gilbert credits her own entrepreneurial experience as crucial to her understanding of SBA members’ priorities. She is an owner of the Tuscan Market & Wine Shop in Arlington Heights, a wine bar, gastropub, and retailer that is also an SBA member.
“I also think about my very first job, helping my father at his manufacturing firm,” Gilbert adds. “I was eight years old, but I could already appreciate his entrepreneurial spirit. I think about that strength every day; it leads me to have conversations with businesses of all sizes about how they do business and what a chamber such as the SBA can do as their advocate.”
Gilbert has set an ambitious agenda for her first year as President, and the themes are clear: Connect member businesses of all sizes with one another, provide programming that is responsive to their evolving needs, and ensure that the local, regional, and national levels of government hear members’ concerns with an unequivocal voice.
“The Schaumburg Business Association’s strength lies in its members,” Gilbert says. “We represent the second-largest economy in the state of Illinois and have the strength and stability our membership deserves. That is a testament to my predecessors, our staff, our Board of Directors and the Village of Schaumburg. Because we are strong and stable, we are also nimble enough to shape and mold our services—always improving, always staying relevant to our members as they grow and our membership grows.”
The 2019 strategic plan will bring greater clarity to programing with regard to different market segments, business sizes, and levels of management represented in the SBA membership. “There will be new outlets and services for small businesses. There will be new channels for the leadership of larger corporations to connect. Decisionmakers will have even better, more direct access to one another. It’s certainly about generating leads and opportunities, but a greater emphasis will be brought to deeper collaborations,” Gilbert explains. Source: SBA

MBA: Taking Care of Business!

It’s been a busy and exciting time at the Midland Business Alliance (MBA). While you’re taking care of your business, we’ve been busy working to better take care of you! With the Midland Area Chamber of Commerce, Midland Tomorrow, CBM Services, MITCON and the Innovation Center, the MBA can help businesses of every size, at every stage. But how do you bring together organizations?

This has been done through a whole lot of listening. Sarah Opperman was named the MBA’s Interim CEO earlier this year and immediately dove in to “listening sessions” with businesses throughout the community. Earlier this summer, the Boards of Directors from every MBA division met for a half-day retreat to dive deep into what Midland’s business community needs. This session yielded a lot of great feedback and direction.

As a result, we have developed a new, expanded Mission, Vision and Value Proposition for all of us who represent the MBA.

Mission: To support the attraction, development and growth of businesses throughout Midland County by providing an integrated portfolio of tools and resources.

Vision: The MBA leads our business community with a unified voice, creating an environment where business and the community prosper.

Value Proposition: The MBA is Midland’s fully integrated business hub, serving a vibrant community in which people, industry and businesses prosper. We are the voice for more than 3,000 businesses, from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. The MBA is strategically aligned, helping businesses to:

· Boost innovation and entrepreneurship
· Attract business and talent
· Promote retention and expansion
· Advocate for business
· Provide comprehensive business services
· Convene resources to advance business/community priorities

We’re using this inspiring and inclusive foundation to build our plans and programs for 2019 and beyond. Stay tuned for more information about the MBA’s new strategic plan and how that will guide our programming. Spoiler alert: Things are going to be better than ever!

New tech upstart aims to help Frankfort thrive in digital age

As the other aspect of the business, cybersecurity is essential for small businesses, the pair said.
Why? Because many business owners do not realize just how prolific cyber attacks are.
More than half of small businesses fall victim to a cyber attack each year, and half of those businesses will be forced to close their doors. That said, SimplifIT officials said they can help, at a minimum, limit the damage by helping companies to secure themselves.
“We want to help people understand what risks are out there and help mitigate those risks,” Willard said.
Right now, the company is looking to build momentum locally, not just in Frankfort but also in surrounding areas like Georgetown and Lexington.
One business owner said he views the company as part of an ongoing movement in the area.
“It is an exciting time to be part of the downtown Frankfort revitalization,” Taylor Marshall, owner of RE/MAX Commonwealth, said in a statement.  “A new energy, young and creative, is moving downtown Frankfort forward. Strategic partners like SimplifIT will be the leaders demonstrating outside of the box thinking to raise the bar in business and community development in our capital city.”
While SimplifIT is investing in the community, they also said plans for growth involve developing a national cybersecurity presence and selling to larger businesses.
For now, the immediate focus is on building in Frankfort, beginning with the businesses official Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting at noon next Thursday, Aug. 16. Read more: State-Journal

Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber to host Community Leadership Breakfast

Matt Wollack knows all about second chances.

His father, Robert E. Wollack, is founder of Wolverine Human Services, one of Michigan’s largest nonprofits in providing care and guidance for delinquent youths. The organization has helped hundreds of children and their families over the past 30 years.

That’s his present life, but there’s also his past. Robert Wollack once served with the New York Police Department, where he fell into a life of snorting cocaine, shaking down drug dealers and rubbing elbows with the mafia. He was eventually convicted on drug trafficking charges and, in 1963, was sentenced to serve 10 years at a federal prison in Milan.

“He rehabilitated himself in prison,” Wollack said of his dad. “He ended up serving three years and, when he got out, he was committed to making a better life for himself.”

Wollack, who serves as vice president of strategic development for Wolverine Human Services, plans to share his father’s story at the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber’s Community Leadership Breakfast, 8-10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the Village Club, 190 E. Long Lake Road, in Bloomfield Hills.

C.J. Felton, director of development for the Community Housing Network, and Kimberly Wyman, founder and executive director of Adopt More, are the two other featured speakers at the breakfast. Tickets for the breakfast are still available and can be purchased at the door at www.bbcc.com.
“Each of these speakers has an inspiring story to share,” chamber president Joe Bauman said. “We’re hoping our audience members will listen to these stories and perhaps find new ways to contribute to their communities and help make a positive difference.”

Robert Wollack went on to earn a master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan and even wrote a book about his experiences, “They Will Be Victors: The Remarkable Story of One Man’s Passion for Second Chances.” His son could not be prouder.

“We now have eight social workers in our family,” Wollack said. “Helping others is the greatest feeling in the world.” Read more: Hometown Life

Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce: GovCon Series: Open Source Intelligence in an Information-Saturated World

Thursday, November 16
8:00 - 10:00 am

Open source information, especially social media, has exploded in scale in the last ten years, overwhelming the ability of governments and companies to collect, process, and most importantly, derive meaning and value from the data. We have assembled a panel of government, private sector, and intelligence contractor experts to discuss the legal, political, and economic dilemmas to these geometric increases in the availability of this information.

About our Panelists

James Mulvenon, General Manager, Special Programs Division, SOS International

James Mulvenon is General Manager of SOS International’s Special Programs Division, where he has recruited and trained a team of nearly forty Chinese, Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Pashto, Urdu, Russian, and Korean linguist-analysts performing research and analysis for the US Government. A Chinese linguist by training, he is a leading international expert on Chinese cyber, technology transfer, espionage, and military issues. Paducah playing host to young professionals

Paducah is hosting young professionals from several states in the YP Unite Summit today at the Julian Carroll Convention Center.

This is the first time the multi-state, annual event is being held in Paducah, according to Sandra Wilson, Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce president.

"This is the first time it's been held outside of Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati," Wilson said. "We've got about 150 people registered."

Today's schedule includes addresses from Paducah entrepreneurs Ed and Meagan Musselman; Allison Ball, Kentucky treasurer; Asa James Swan, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet chief of staff; Steve Powless, chief executive officer of Computer Services, Inc.; and George Wilson, Paducah native and former professional football player.

The YP Unite Summit is an annual gathering of young professional groups and individuals from Kentucky and five surrounding states with the goal of sharing best practices and leadership development. It began in 2013 in Frankfort.

The summit kicked off Thursday night with a reception at The 1857 Hotel, followed by a trolley tour of points of interest around Paducah.

In addition to being of interest to the Paducah chamber's young professional group, hosting the summit is also an opportunity to attract other millennials to the area, Sandra Wilson said.

"We're really excited to have the opportunity to host and for our group to showcase themselves ... and their community," she said.

Mayor Brandi Harless was not able to attend but recorded a message to summit participants, Wilson said.

"Her message included talking to them about our community and that she hopes they find Paducah to be a creative city, very inviting, and a place they will want to visit or consider moving to." Read more: Paducah Sun

Presented by Barnes Crossing Auto Group, this year’s Taste of Tupelo business expo will be held Nov. 16 and will feature 108 businesses providing demonstrations, complimentary samples and information about themselves.

In addition to dozens of local restaurants, caterers, and bakeries, the Taste of Tupelo will feature exhibitors from various industries including healthcare, banking, manufacturing, retail, educational institutions and more.

“We have more food booths than ever,” said Mallory Lawson of the Community Development Foundation, which helps sponsor the event.

Elizabeth Gable, co-owner of Endville Bakery and Catering, has participated for several years at the Taste of Tupelo. She and her husband, David, opened Endville in 2011.

She said the event is a great time to expand her network, not only seeing other business owners, but spreading the word about her business to potential customers.

“We get to visit with our current customers, we get a chance to meet new customers, and we just get to see a lot of people and have a fun night out,” she said.
