Indiana ranks 8th in Tax Foundation's 2015 Business Tax Climate Index.  The cost of doing business in Indiana is very favorable, due in part to having one of the best workers' compensation rates and unemployment tax rates. Due to legislation passed this year, corporate tax for Indiana is set to drop from 7% to 4.9% by 2021.

Politics aside, nomination of a woman is historic

Partisan politics aside, Hillary Clinton’s nomination as a presidential candidate marks an historical first for women, several Mississippi political and business leaders said.

“I think this is good for our country,” said Madison attorney Vicki Slater, who ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic primary for governor in 2015. “It shows we can choose who is the best qualified candidate and not be limited by race or gender in that selection. It’s also wonderful for American families. Women in American culture make most of the decisions on education, on healthcare and consumer safety for their families.”

Even across the aisle, the historic first for women was noted.

Republican state Treasurer Lynn Fitch criticized Democratic economic policies she said have “crushed” women, but agreed the nomination of a female presidential candidate is noteworthy.

Linda Bynum, director of the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce, said: “All politics aside, this is an historic moment. I don’t know whether or not she’s the right candidate for the job and this is not me endorsing her, but this does lift women up. A lot of people of my generation never thought they’d see this in their lifetimes … I remember back in the '80s, when we saw Geraldine Ferraro as Walter Mondale’s running mate, I thought to myself at the time that I never dreamed I would see that. Then again, when Sarah Palin was John McCain’s running mate … I just say we’ve come a long way from the days when women didn’t even have the right to vote, couldn’t own property and couldn’t even open a bank account without their husband’s signature. Clay County Ribbon Cutting: New assisted living facility lauded at opening

Tuesday was a milestone for Exceptional Living Centers and Clay County when the grand opening was held for Towne Park Assisted Living of Brazil.

Mayor Brian Wyndham said it's the first assisted living center in the county and it's a much needed business.

"This is a beautiful facility. Tom (Watts, Exceptional Living Centers CEO), you and your group came into town and identified a need and, more importantly, you did something about it and we really appreciate the investment you are making in this community to help us grow," Wyndham said. "As you look around, Brazil is moving and growing and it's folks like this who come in and help us do that."

Clay County Chamber of Commerce Vice President Mark Thompson said the project is bringing more than just jobs to the area.

"From the Chamber of Commerce perspective, we get very excited when we see 30 new jobs added to Brazil and see a beautiful new structure such as this," he said. "But what's going on here is something more than new jobs being added and a new structure. It's something much more personal than that. This place is meeting a need that is very real to Clay County."

Thompson told a story about Harold Plunkett, who was born and raised in Clay County.

"As his pastor, I officiated his wife's funeral a few years ago and worked with his family with 'How can we best care for Harold?' As a lifelong resident of Clay County, a generation who made Clay County a great place to live, I'm pleased and thrilled that Harold gets to remain in Clay County because of Towne Park." Chamber support: PORCH opens in downtown Beloit, offers gifts and more

Debbie Mongan hadn’t been to downtown Beloit for years, but after strolling through its Beloit Farmers Market last fall, she decided to open a business in the city’s downtown.

“I was impressed with how big the market was, but then I became more interested in what was going on in the storefronts,” she said.

Joe and Debbie Mongan opened PORCH at the former home of Flying Pig on Friday. The store is located at 430 E. Grand Ave., Suite 104, and hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday.

In addition to Joe’s metal garden art, the store offers clothing, gifts, garden items, jewelry and baby items.

The Mongans might be new to Beloit's downtown, but they aren’t new to retail.

Debbie had been working as giftware sales representative in 2003 when she met her husband, Joe, in Bangkok, Thailand, while building a playground for the non-profit Kids Around the World. Joe, a heavy equipment welder, was creating metal garden art and the couple decided to showcase his work in a storefront after his success at art shows.

They opened PORCH at 3065 N. Perryville Road, Rockford, nine years ago. She said the business became a big success.

While walking down Beloit’s streets this fall, the couple became impressed with so much entrepreneurial activity in the downtown.

“We wanted to get in when it's really starting to take off,” she said.

Debbie said she also was pleased with the Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Beloit Association’s support in helping her set up shop, as well as the kindness of those in the community. Read more: Beloit Daily News

Good morning Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!

Southern Illinois Chambers of Commerce Seeking Protection Against Electricity Price Increases

Seeking protection against seemingly inevitable future electricity price increases, Southern Illinois Chambers of Commerce are taking a proactive approach to help secure long-term rates for their members.

Just a few short months ago, announcements of coal-fired electric generation plant closures in Newton and two in Baldwin, IL were announced.  Following that announcement came the news that a nuclear power plant in Clinton, IL would also be closing.  All closures came with formal dates for the closures after Illinois legislators failed to bring up proposed legislation seeking a legislative response or “subsidy” to keep these plants operating at profit levels viable to the companies who own them.

“Given the two scenarios, it appears an increase in electric supply rates is inevitable.  If somehow there is a legislative response, that will undoubtedly come in the form of some type of subsidy imposed on the residents and commercial users of electricity.  Absent a legislative response, four plant closures in a year is all but certainly going to lead to less supply and subsequently an increase in electricity prices in the market” said Jeff Haarmann, Managing Partner of AGE, the coordinator of the Southern Illinois Chamber of Commerce Electricity Buying Group.  “These short-term changes have nothing to do with the federally mandated EPA regulations for cleaner energy, which could have an even further devastating impact on prices.”

Chambers such as Marion, Carbondale, Jefferson County, Herrin, Lawrence County and others throughout Southern Illinois are seeking rate protection by enrolling members in their collective buying group now, negotiating long-term rates now while the relative price of electricity is still low.

“We are advocates for our members.  Having the ability to save our members potentially tens of thousands of dollars is just as important as driving additional revenue to our communities.  The dollars we are able to save our members are dollars that go straight to their bottom line.  Those dollars saved stay in our community and allow our members to re-invest in their businesses and people.  The dollars continue to be spent several times over in our local economies.  That benefits everyone,” said Dalus Ben Avi, Marion Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.

Negotiations are currently taking place for chamber members who are already participating in the Southern Illinois Chamber of Commerce Bulk Electricity Buying Group.  Those negotiations are seeking to extend rates well into the future by securing rates now while markets are still favorable.

The Southern Illinois Chamber of Commerce Bulk Buying Group including the Marion Chamber of Commerceis holding an open enrollment period for members who are not currently enrolled in the Electricity Buying Group.  Beginning July 25, chamber members who have not made a choice of electricity supplier and are still on Ameren’s default rates, or chamber members who have a current supply contract that expires in the next twelve months, can contact their respective chamber for enrollment details.  Upon closure of the enrollment period on August 12, the collective group of new enrollees will be competitively bid to multiple suppliers seeking to serve the collective commercial aggregate with long-term rate security. Chamber project: Downtown Biloxi gets poetic
The Biloxi Bay Chamber's beautification committee has a new art project taking over the streets of downtown.
The project called 'Poetry Storm' features art from local artists in various locations that are only visible when wet.
Artists will use Rustoleum Never Wet brand spray paint as their medium to fill out stencils. BLP Mobile Paint on Caillavet St. provided the paint for the project.
The committee is expecting 20-25 separate installations across town, and encourages anyone to add their own creations. All projects must be approved by the Chamber beforehand.
So far, artist Ashley Burton from Orange Grove has a piece in front of the Half Shell Oyster House, and artist Lucinda L'Enfant's piece is on display outside of Ellsey's Hardware. Read more: WDAM TV 7

Crawfordsville/Montgomery County Chamber interest: Mayor Barton: ‘I continue to look at Indiana West Advantage’

Crawfordsville Mayor Todd Barton told the city council Monday night that he is always looking at Indiana West Advantage.
The council met Monday night for a budget work session. The current budget proposal calls for city to contract with IWA for $75,000 for them to act as the city’s economic development agency.
“If I feel it is not working for us I will be back to the council to discuss our options,” Barton said.
After the meeting Barton said that if the city did not have a good partner in IWA the city could look at taking the $75,000 and have an economic development department within the city. He added that a new county council will take office in January and he does not know how much they will continue to contribute toward IWA.
Last year during budget talks County Councilman Mark Davidson attempted to decrease the county’s IWA funding to $25,000. His motion failed by a 4-3 vote.
Barton told the council that he is still confident in IWA and new IWA Executive Director Tom Utley. Utley was hired earlier this month as IWA and Crawfordsville/Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce executive director.
“Tom Utley is in place and is doing a solid job,” he said, adding that IWA has to constantly evolve. Read more: Journal Review

Burlington Book sale kicks off two weekends of activities

Two weeks of City of Burlington events started this week with the annual Burlington Public Library book sale, which lasts until noon on Saturday.
Normally the book sale runs the same week as the City of Burlington’s sidewalk sales, but the Friends of the Library moved the sale a week earlier to avoid a conflict with the Racine County Fair.
“We got wary that it wasn’t a good business decision to compete with the biggest attraction in the county,” said Scott Carson, president of the Friends of the Library.
The sale will include used books, CDs, DVDs, and other items. Carson said there is a great deal of children’s and fiction material this year.
“We have tons of children’s books,” Carson said. “Tons of children, tons of fiction.”
Carson also mentioned his volunteer staff for the event, which is between 75 and 100 people, some of whom were helping set up in the heat Tuesday and Wednesday.
“They are so committed and hard working, and we’re so thankful for the volunteers and BHS with community service,” Carson said, adding that a Burlington High School representative is on the book sale committee.
The citywide Maxwell Street Days and Sidewalk Sales will be Friday and Saturday, July 29 and 30, with a number of vendors in Wehmhoff Square park as well as businesses offering sales on the sidewalks outside their stores.
The Burlington Historical Society will hold its ice cream social Saturday at the Pioneer Cabin from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The community-wide rummage sale will also be July 29 and 30.
Shelly Leverenz, a member of the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce Advisory Board, said the city always sets its dates up to match particular weekends. For instance, Maxwell Street Days is always the last weekend in July.
“Our city is always on a schedule so it can remember dates,” Leverenz said, adding that other regular events, such as Spooky City and the Christmas parade, always fall on the same weekend every year. Read more: My Racine County

Chamber Event: Stop by Geneva Arts Fair July 23-24

For the 158 artists expected to exhibit their work at the 15th annual Geneva Arts Fair, the enthusiastic reception they receive is one of the main reasons they keep coming back.
"The whole setting there is really lovely and the audience seems very receptive and, of course, artists appreciate that very much," said 97-year-old painter, Lars-Birger Sponberg, of Deerfield.Jon Hecker, a woodworker of Bloomington, Indiana heads to Geneva for similar reasons.
"I found that the crowds there are genuinely enthusiastic about the work," he said. "We've done the show, off and on, for about five years and we really enjoy it. We've got a lot of good artist friends and it will be a small reunion when we get there."
Geneva can expect up to 25,000 visitors this weekend, which is about the number of residents in the city, according to Laura Rush, communications manager of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 23-24, in the downtown area, and admission is free.
"Even though we're at 22,000 (residents), we're still a small town," Rush said.
Rush finds that the art lovers who attend the fair are enthusiastic. Read more: Daily Herald

Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber initiative: Much to see, do for retirees in Brookhaven

Brookhaven is one of 15 certified retirement cities in Mississippi, chosen by Hometown Mississippi Retirement, a state organization to attract retirees to Mississippi.
Hometown Mississippi Retirement said they evaluate each city based on crime rate, cost of living, quality of medical care, education and recreation.
It was the retirement committee of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce that brought everything together to get Brookhaven certified, according to Homer Richardson, who runs an information page at homerrichardson.com/retireinbrookhaven.
“We retired here in 1989,” Richardson said. “I think the big thing is the size of the city and the activeness of the town itself. There are just so many things here in Brookhaven — stores that are open, businesses and places to eat.”
Richardson said a vibrant downtown is one of the major features that has made Brookhaven an attractive place to retire. “So many of the smaller towns in Mississippi, so many people took their business and took it out to the bypass,” he said. “
As a result, the downtown sections of many of these small towns essentially disappeared. In contrast, Richardson said Brookhaven has plenty of small, homegrown businesses downtown. “We have a hotel downtown, for example, and things like Janie’s (Pastry Shop and Bakery) and all these restaurants that literally you can walk to,” he said. “Not many towns have an active evening time. Things that have continued to be done through the Brookhaven Trust and others has kept Brookhaven a viable small city.”

Brookhaven was attractive enough that the Chamber was able to bring WLBT personality Walt Grayson out to narrate a minidocumentary on the city in 2008. Read more: Daily Leader

Greater Beloit Chamber Event: Lt. Gov. Kleefisch urges hiring former inmates, the disabled

After a few lighthearted pokes at the media, Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch urged employers to consider hiring the disabled and the formerly incarcerated to get higher workforce participation at a legislative breakfast Thursday.

The Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce hosted the event Thursday morning at The Castle, 501 Prospect St.

Rep. Amy Loudenbeck, R-Clinton, introduced Kleefisch calling her a “recovering news anchor.” At the podium, Kleefisch said when media asked her about giving up her position as a delegate at the Republican National Convention, she said she was committed to her day job and talking to the constituents.

“They couldn’t believe I would give up glitz and glamor in Cleveland, Ohio to work for the people of Wisconsin,” she said.

Praising Wisconsin for its economic development, she touted Wisconsin’s assets such as the manufacturing and agriculture tax credit and the state’s fully-funded pension program. In Illinois, Kleefisch said, there is $100 billion in unfunded pension liability.

“Today, we stand nearly alone at the top, having none of those bills over our head like almost every other state in America,” she said.

Having a fully-funded pension program indicates stability and can be attractive to businesses and investors who look at communities with a long-term perspective. Those in European countries, for example, might look ahead three to five years and a family business might look ahead for up to 50 years before choosing a state to conduct business.
