Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a GREAT day!

Arlington Chamber of Commerce Welcomes New Amazon Headquarters

The Arlington Chamber of Commerce welcomes today's announcement that Amazon.com, Inc. has chosen to locate its new headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. Amazon's choice reiterates the assets that Arlington brings to our businesses through its location, workforce talent, and business environment. This addition to Arlington is a significant step toward enhancing and maintaining the strength of Arlington's commercial sector and diversifying our economic base. The Chamber previously expressed its support for Arlington's efforts to recruit Amazon's new headquarters and today congratulates the Commonwealth of Virginia, Arlington County and City of Alexandria governments, JBG SMITH, and other stakeholders who made this deal possible.

"Amazon's choice to locate its new headquarters in Arlington reinforces what we have long known, that Arlington and Northern Virginia have all of the critical factors needed for businesses to succeed," says Kate Bates, President & CEO of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce. "Our community provides key infrastructure, including transportation, technology, and one of the most highly-educated talent pools in the country, along with close proximity to the nation's capital."

"We welcome Amazon to the Arlington business community with open arms," says 2018 Chamber Chair Lindsey Rheaume of EagleBank. "Amazon will benefit from the strong business climate, talent, and infrastructure that make Arlington a great place to do business. Our existing businesses and inspired Arlington entrepreneurs look forward to the opportunities that having Amazon right in our backyard gives us."

Amazon's commitment to locate in Arlington will help to alleviate the pressures on our local economy caused by an office vacancy rate that has been elevated for more than a decade by the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), the 2008 financial crisis and resulting recession, and federal budget sequestration. Their plans to add new jobs in Arlington will help meet the employment needs of the Washington, DC region's growing population and will create new opportunities for our local workforce.

Arlington has the assets in place for the entire community to benefit from Amazon's new headquarters. The Chamber will now work with its members to manage the opportunities and challenges that the new headquarters will bring to the region. The Chamber's more than 750 member organizations range across the entire Arlington commercial sector, from small local businesses to large corporations, and include many Arlington nonprofit organizations and community groups.

"The Arlington Chamber welcomes the benefits of adding new businesses, including diversifying our economic base and creating opportunities for existing businesses to grow with new partners," Bates says. "The Chamber is making plans with other chambers of commerce and business organizations throughout the greater Washington region of Maryland, DC, and Virginia to provide a forum for businesses across the region to take advantage of the opportunities that Amazon's new headquarters affords." Rhyme and repeat, says Language Intelligence author Joe Romm. People are more likely to believe a phrase that rhymes. Repeating something three times is nearly as convincing as if three people said it once. He points to the chart-topping song Call Me Maybe, which rhymes "me maybe" and repeats the letter "m". Convince others with a power-packed phrase that pays, for your BIGG success! Get more tips from BIGG Success here.

Wisconsin Rapids Entrepeneur Takes Home the Top Prize at the Central Wisconsin Hatch Regional Finale

Area entrepreneur Pete Jungwirth of Wisconsin Rapids took home the top prize at the Central Wisconsin Hatch Regional Finale Wednesday night held at the Noel Car Barn, earning $5,000 for his company, Amira Learning. The company uses artificial intelligence technology to help teachers assess students’ reading levels and improve their skills individually, based on specific areas where they need help.

The HATCH Finale was attended by a crowd of nearly 250 people who watched six area entrepreneurs pitch their business to judges and vote for their favorite. During the award presentations at the end of the evening, Fred Raasch of BrightStar incorrectly announced that Siren Shrub was the winner of the People’s Choice Award, determined by a popular vote of those attending.  The correct recipient of the People’s Choice Award and $500 cash prize was Michael More and his product, The Scape, while Siren Shrub earned the BrightStar Entrepreneur Award and a $500 cash prize.

The Scape is a unique product that synchronizes aspects of mobiles, light projectors and sound machines to help babies and adults sleep.  More and The Scape product won the local Hatch event in Stevens Point to qualify for the finale.

Siren Shrub, a company run by Layne Cozzolino and Mindy McCord from Stevens Point, produce a line of concentrated sipping vinegars made from locally grown fruits and herbs. Siren Shrub presented in June at the Wisconsin Rapids Hatch event and were selected as one of the “Wild Card” presenters at the regional finale.

Area entrepreneur and philanthropist John Noel kicked off the event with some words of encouragement for the six finalists. “Regardless of what happens tonight, pursue your dreams with every ounce of your passion,” he said.  “And as your dreams become successful businesses, I encourage you to do what you can to give back and make the world better.”

HATCH is funded by BrightStar Wisconsin Foundation with the help of a matching grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation and support from local sponsors for the finale that included the Judd S. Alexander Foundation, Compass Properties, Ruder Ware Law Firm, BMO Harris Bank and North Wind Renewable Energy.
