Good morning #Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!

Chamber Executive Ongoing Education: Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead By by Sheryl Sandberg

Thirty years after women became 50 percent of the college graduates in the United States, men still hold the vast majority of leadership positions in government and industry. This means that women’s voices are still not heard equally in the decisions that most affect our lives. In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg examines why women’s progress in achieving leadership roles has stalled, explains the root causes, and offers compelling, commonsense solutions that can empower women to achieve their full potential.

Sandberg is the chief operating officer of Facebook and is ranked on Fortune’s list of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business and as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. In 2010, she gave an electrifying TEDTalk in which she described how women unintentionally hold themselves back in their careers. Her talk, which became a phenomenon and has been viewed more than two million times, encouraged women to “sit at the table,” seek challenges, take risks, and pursue their goals with gusto.

In Lean In, Sandberg digs deeper into these issues, combining personal anecdotes, hard data, and compelling research to cut through the layers of ambiguity and bias surrounding the lives and choices of working women. She recounts her own decisions, mistakes, and daily struggles to make the right choices for herself, her career, and her family. She provides practical advice on negotiation techniques, mentorship, and building a satisfying career, urging women to set boundaries and to abandon the myth of “having it all.”  She describes specific steps women can take to combine professional achievement with personal fulfillment and demonstrates how men can benefit by supporting women in the workplace and at home.

Written with both humor and wisdom, Sandberg’s book is an inspiring call to action and a blueprint for individual growth. Lean In is destined to change the conversation from what women can’t do to what they can. Read more: Lean-In

Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber collaboration: The Santa Parade

A new contest featuring decorated floats is coming to this year's Wyoming-Kentwood Santa Parade, set for Dec. 3.
The Decorate Your Float Contest will award the top two decorated floats in the parade with prize packages of more than $100 in gift cards.
Officials from the Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the parade along with the city of Wyoming, will choose the winning decorated floats. About 60 floats are expected to participate, said Bob O'Callaghan, the chamber president and CEO.
He said the parade also will feature five school bands, area businesses, Wyoming and Kentwood fire trucks and Kentwood Mayor Stephen Kepley.
Sisters Marge Wilson and Marilyn Free, of Marge's Donut Den, will serve as the parade grand marshals. Marge's Donut Den, at 1751 28th St. SW, has been an area staple for more than 40 years.
O'Callaghan said free pictures with Santa will be available at Brann's Steakhouse and Grille, at 4157 S. Division Ave., after the parade. Parents are encouraged to bring cameras.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. The parade route along South Division Avenue begins at 34th Street and ends at Murray Street near the Chase Bank. Read more: M LIVE

Downtown Burlington will 'Light Up' Friday night

With the holiday season just around the corner, there will be a spotlight on shopping in Downtown Burlington Friday night — literally.

The eighth annual Light Up the Night will take over Burlington from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov.18. Spotlights will illuminate the skies as shoppers look for seasonal gift ideas, participate in drawings for door prizes and movie tickets, and enjoy complimentary refreshments and horse-drawn carriage rides.

The event’s organizer, Burlington Menswear owner Shelly Leverenz said the event promotes Downtown Burlington businesses and the unity that they have.

“It’s bringing awareness to our community working together as one,” she said. “It generates awareness of what we have to offer to our community and our visitors.”

According to Leverenz, the event coincides with the premiere at Plaza Theater, 448 Milwaukee Ave., of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” the newest movie in the Harry Potter universe. It will also kick off Operation Burlington Cares, an event in which participating downtown businesses, through Dec. 31, will collect food for the local food pantry at Love Inc., 466 S. Pine St.

Leverenz said the timing of the event comes at a perfect time for Downtown Burlington businesses.

“It’s the perfect week because it hits before the big Black Friday and shop small (Small Business Saturday),” she said. “It’s a perfect pocket for us.”

Leslie Schwartz, who oversees promotions and business services for the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce, also praised the timing, calling the event a “kick off to the holiday season.” She also said the event has grown in recent years. “We want people to shop local in Burlington and it’s a fantastic event,” Schwartz said. “We’re excited about it. It’s something they’ve been doing for a while and it’s really taken off.” Read more: Journal Times

Daviess County Chamber: Hunt for elves continues during annual stroll

Christmas will come to town Friday evening when the annual Heartbeat of Washington Christmas Stroll takes over Main Street.
Samantha Bobbitt, executive director of the Daviess County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, said the stroll, which begins at 4 p.m., will not only feature extended hours for many downtown merchants but also an hour-long appearance by Silly Safari’s reindeer, photos with Santa, and the hunt for the coveted Elf on the Shelf.
“This is a great chance for people to come downtown and see what our local businesses offer,” Bobbitt said, adding several stores will be offering in-store specials. “It really gives our retail stores a chance for first dibs on some Christmas shopping.”
Amanda Morgan, owner of Knicker’s and Petticoats, said Santa will be in her shop beginning at 6 p.m.
“Steve Osha Photography will be taking pictures with Santa for $1,” she said adding other photo packages are also available. “And the Trendy Tree Top, a new children’s boutique inside the store, will also be open during the stroll.”
This will be the fourth year for the popular Elf on the Shelf Hunt that will lead strollers to 13 downtown businesses each with their own elf.
Those participating in the stroll are encouraged to pick up a special punch card for a chance to win a gift basket filled with merchandise from the participating businesses. All 13 businesses must be visited the day of the stroll to be eligible to win the adult or children’s prize baskets.
Businesses with elves include A Touch of Heaven, Knickers and Petticoats, A Wonderful Life, Main Street Family Restuarant, Women’s Resource Center, Lemon Tree, Bambini’s, The Taylor’ed Look, Cherry Ghost Coffeehouse, Daviess County Community Foundation, Dave’s Floor Covering, Thompson Insurance and the Indiana Theater.
Bobbitt said the Women’s Resource Center will also offer free ornament kits for families to take home to create together. Other activities include a live nativity, the visit from the Silly Safari reindeer from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m., and more. Read more: Washington Times Herald
