Rapid City (SD), Hampton Roads (VA) and Naperville (IL) Chambers Receive 5 Stars; among 16 chambers nationwide to receive Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber

Tuesday, November 15, 2016 - 12:00 pm

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, at its board meeting today, awarded accreditation to 16 chambers of commerce for their sound policies, effective organizational procedures, and positive impact on their communities.
“Accreditation validates a chamber as having programs that benefit its local economy and positively influence its community,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, U.S. Chamber vice president of Federation Relations and Institute for Organization Management. “We applaud these organizations for advancing the principles of free enterprise.”
The only program of its kind in the country, U.S. Chamber accreditation recognizes excellence in chamber planning and performance. To achieve accreditation, a chamber must demonstrate quality programs, clear organizational procedures, and effective communications by meeting minimum operation and program standards in the areas of governance, program development, government affairs, and technology.
Local and regional chambers are rated “Accredited,” “Accredited with 3 Stars,” “Accredited with 4 Stars,” or “Accredited with 5 Stars.” State chambers are rated “Accredited State Chamber,” or “Accredited State Chamber with Distinction.” The final determination is made by the accrediting board, a committee of U.S. Chamber board members, and chamber CEOs from across the country.

The following chambers of commerce received accreditation:
Accredited with 3 Stars:
  • Greater Casa Grande Chamber of Commerce, Casa Grande, AZ
  • Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce, Tomball, TX
Accredited with 4 Stars:
  • Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce, Cleveland, TN
  • Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, New Haven, CT
  • Licking County Chamber of Commerce, Newark, OH
Accredited with 5 Stars:
  • Chamber – SWLA, Lake Charles, LA
  • Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce, Aiken, SC
  • Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, Westlake Village, CA
  • Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, Norfolk, VA
  • Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC, Harrisburg, PA

Effingham County Chamber Wins Illinois Chamber of Year Award

The Effingham County Chamber of Commerce has won the Outstanding Chamber of the Year Award.
The award was presented at the Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives Annual Celebration and Awards Dinner. The event was held November 3 in Quincy.
Desiree Bennyhoff, the 2016 state chamber executives chair, who serves as President and CEO of the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce, said, "Under the leadership of President and CEO Norma Lansing, the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce has thrived, showing that commitment to membership, and strong leadership, can grow an organization and positively impact its community".
Bennyhoff said, "Through a collaborative approach, the organization has implemented notable programs, established new partnerships and developed best practices that can be replicated around the state."
Effingham County Chamber Board Chairman Jeff Fritchtnitch said, "On behalf of the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce Board, I would like to extend deep appreciation to our Chamber staff and membership for their ongoing efforts and support of the Chamber. The many programs that are provided to our membership would not happen without member volunteers who commit a great deal of time to achieve success."
Fritchtnitch said, "I would also like to highlight the Effingham County businesses, who each year make the commitment to become members and participate in these programs that empower them independently and collectively, which in turn assists in creating a county that is a great place to work, but also to live, play and visit." Added value brings increased membership to Milton Area Chamber

When asked to describe factors contributing to the Milton Area Chamber of Commerce’s (MACC) recent success, executive director Dani Stivarius pointed to recruitment strategies and added benefits for members.
Board president Jerry Schuetz spoke of hard work and a mutual commitment to growth shared by community organizations. He said MACC is particularly fortunate to have a dedicated executive director in Stivarius.
Hired to her position in 2014, Stivarius might be relatively new in her MACC role, but she’s not new to Milton. She understands the needs of small businesses, she said, noting that she moved to the area when she was in the second grade.
Her father was a small business owner, opening H & J Auto, 406 W. High St., in 1985. He retired about five years ago, she said, but the company is still run today by a family member.
“The reason why I work so hard is because my heart is here in Milton,” she said.
“The chamber’s success is a story of being able to show people that the chamber matters today,” Schuetz said, calling Stivarius an “exceptional director.” He credited her with an affinity for communicating the chamber’s message while creating partnerships through mechanisms such as building added-value educational programming for members, as well as serving as an advocate, bringing members’ concerns to the attention of appropriate local officials.
“It’s an indicator of why we’re seeing a 31 percent increase in two years and now we don’t have to be reliant on taxpayer dollars to be successful as an organization. Our chamber is an active part of our community,” Schuetz said.
He added the business members appreciate a sense of belonging, which they achieve through chamber membership.

With an increase in real numbers of 37 members, up from 119 to 156, over the course of two years, both chamber leaders described an amalgamation of ingredients, including community engagement, membership support and dedication, innovative ideas, and hard work, all of which ultimately led to financial independence. “I am honored to step into the position of President for the La Porte Chamber of Commerce,” stated Mrozinski. “With the help of our board and community, I will work tirelessly to increase community development and the quality of life in the Great La Porte area.”
“With over 5 years with the La Porte Chamber, Rita is currently Vice President and has long been an enthusiastic promoter of the La Porte area and an active participant in community affairs. She has brought strong fiscal control to the Chamber’s finances and was instrumental in helping achieve our 5 Star rating, the highest awarded by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. I feel very fortunate that Rita came forward, actively looking to take on the responsibilities of President and continue to build on the success our Chamber has experienced under the 15 year leadership of retiring Mike Seitz,” said Tom Larson.
