Toro Company and Tomah Chamber Coordinate Emergency Response to Flood Damage
Leadership from the Toro Company in Tomah met with the Tomah Chamber and Visitors Center on Thursday, August 30th to discuss the devastating flood damage in our neighboring communities.
The Toro Company is issuing a plea and challenge to businesses in the area to help provide relief to the flooding victims in neighboring communities. Beginning Monday, September 10th, the Toro Company will have at their premise an empty semi trailer. They are urging businesses to help fill the trailer with much needed supplies of water, non-perishable food, bleach and cleaning supplies and pet food. All containers must be new and not opened.
Toro’s Director of Operations, Chris Hacker, stated “this isn’t just our employees in Monroe County who are deeply affected, we also have employees in Vernon and Juneau Counties that need our help.” Hacker is urging the businesses in Tomah and surrounding areas to pool their resources and help to get supplies to the areas where they are so desperately needed.
Tomah Chamber and Visitors Center President/CEO, Tina Thompson, added that “Tomah is the big city compared to the surrounding villages and communities that surround us. Tomah employs their residents and has more resources than some of these rural communities. I know that the businesses here can step up and do great things when there is a need. We’ve all seen the devastation, and now is that time.”
Tomah Mayor, Mike Murray, also added that “people in the area want to help, but don’t know how…this is how.”
Relief items can be taken to Toro at 200 Sime Avenue beginning on September 10th through the 14th from 6:00 AM until 3:30 PM. The goal is to fill the semi trailer. The Tomah Chamber and Visitors Center will be working with the Salvation Army, Red Cross and other involved relief aid organizations to communicate the needs as well as the distribution of donated items.

Town Square Chamber Publications: Geneva Chamber: Promises made, Promises kept!
The Geneva Chamber of Commerce has worked with Town Square Publications on several publications. Chamber maps and community profiles are well done and we are especially pleased with the quality of the printing and the paper.
Production schedules were provided when we began the projects and the schedule did not waiver from our agreement. Most importantly we had editorial control over the copy and we were able to select the photos and the subjects that are featured. We were able to proof before going to print but we rarely found errors or concerns. Communications throughout the production period were excellent.
We work hard to provide quality and outstanding service to our members. We identify programs that will be good for the business community with an additional benefit – some non-dues income for the Chamber.
We appreciate our partnership with Town Square and will call on them again for the next project.

Oxford’s Women on the Move: A Stroke of Genius Rosie Vassallo is the LOU community’s go-to as the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce’s administrative assistant. Not only can she tell you about the happenings of Lafayette County, she can also show you her expertise in painting. She’s carried her love for art with her since she was a child, and now she uses it to the benefit of the community. HottyToddy.com’s Anna Grace Usery talked with Vassallo about her story.
Usery: You mentioned you grew up in Texas. What part? As a child what did you envision for yourself personally and professionally?
Rosie Vassallo: I grew up in San Antonio, Texas. While my parents didn’t have a college background, their goal was to have me and my siblings all get a college education. I worked hard in high school to get a scholarship which enabled me to attend Texas Christian University and graduate with a bachelor of fine arts in graphic design. My dad instilled in us a very competitive spirit – not to give up but to work harder to achieve greatness. I thought I wanted to go into special education, until I substituted while attending college. I quickly realized that major was not for me. I enjoyed drawing and painting since the fourth grade. I became even more enamored in drawing that year when I received my first blue ribbon. Dressing for success has always been important to me since an early age; I used to think of the beautiful clothes I would be able to purchase once I graduated from college and got a job.
Usery:How did you make it to Oxford?
Rosie Vassallo: My husband Steve graduated from Ole Miss and our goal was to one day live here. He says it only took 44 years to make Oxford our home.
Usery: Where did you begin your career?
Rosie Vassallo: My first job after graduating from TCU was with Handy Dan Home Improvement Centers, in San Antonio. I had responded to a silkscreen position and was offered another job, working in the sign shop. In less than one year, I was awarded “employee of the month” and was promoted to creating marketing ideas for their 55 stores. I was also awarded the prestigious Cash Award of the Eleanor Onderdonk Memorial Award at the San Antonio Art League exhibition where only seventeen cash prizes were awarded from more than 1,000 entries. We then moved a number of times due to Steve’s fantastic promotions and I found different occupations wherever we relocated. So I held various positions from a graphic artist, to an illustrator, decorator and art teacher, worked for a Lawn and Garden Center where I designed their ads as well and won two first place awards in advertising.
Throughout my career I have been recognized with First Place awards in the media of watercolor and oils in Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas.In McKinney, Texas I had the unprecedented experience of my students sweeping every top award, from first place to third place, in every category of the county’s fifth grade art competition. I’m proud to say my art students have won state, national and international competitions. Finally moving to Mississippi, my art background continued to be an asset as I became the Executive Director for Madison’s City Chamber of Commerce for 13 years. I created many of their marketing materials. During my tenure with the chamber I was named to the Mississippi Business Journal’s Top 50 Leading Business Women, as well as Who’s Who in Mississippi. Today, I work as Director of Retirement Attraction for the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Foundation, where I have been able to use my artistic background in designing ads for our members, and donating paintings for our fundraising events. In 2016, I was nominated to the Lafayette-Oxford-University Women of Distinction. In partnership with Jeff McManus we created the “Landscaping Camp” campaign which was designed to raise awareness on beautifying ones yard as Ole Miss has been named the Most Beautiful campus by a number of national publications, while showcasing Oxford MS as a preferred retirement destination. We were awarded the PRAM Award of Excellence this year, among public relations professionals in Mississippi. I produced a painting for each of our speakers and created one specifically to make into a print to thank our sponsors and campers.
Usery: Wow, you’ve had a wonderful career! As far as painting goes, your specialty is animals. Do you have a special connection to animals or is it something people just asked you to paint? Who in the community have you painted for?
Rosie Vassallo: Our nine children (dogs) have been the love of our lives. Pets are all so precious and hold such a special place in one’s heart. I love painting them for others. It makes me smile and feel so good when I complete a commissioned painting, that I can’t wait for the owner to see it. I call myself a pet portrait artist and have been commissioned to paint hundreds of pets. One special painting was presented to Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter at The Economic Development Foundation’s “First To Know Breakfast.” It was a painting of his two poodles that had recently passed away. Others who have commissioned me in Oxford include Michelle Mason, Tony Deal, Megan Berry, Molly Mogridge, Sasha Hedges, Sam Deleeuw, Amy Holmes, Margaret Britt Baker, Gail Miller, Scott Romero and Allen Kurr. In addition, I have done paintings of Ole Miss coaches and have donated paintings to various nonprofits for fundraisers such as Doors of Hope, St. Joseph Catholic Church, United Way and Oxford University School, just to name a few.
Usery: Take me through your creative process.
Rosie Vassallo: I work from photographs and start with a pencil line drawing. No one in Oxford had heard of anyone painting upside down until I shared my techniques with others, which I learned in college. This really brings so much more detail to one’s painting. I start with the eyes because if they are not captured just right, you’ve missed the whole emotion. Once I am almost finished I turn the painting around to see how it looks and always excites me when I get to this point. I love to paint with acrylics and watercolors.
Usery: What’s your favorite thing about being so immersed in the LOU community?
Rosie Vassallo: My favorite thing about the Oxford-Lafayette Community is that there is always something to do… lots of fabulous entertainment.
Usery: What do you love about Oxford?
Rosie Vassallo: What I love about Oxford is its small, safe community with everything you’d find in a large city. In addition, the people here are very friendly and always ready to help others. Oxford is an easy city to navigate. Read more: Hotty Toddy

Hopkinsville To Receive City-Wide Gigabit Fiber Internet Service
HOPKINSVILLE, KY- energynet, a division of Hopkinsville Electric System, is investing in Hopkinsville to bring the city the next generation of digital infrastructure. Gigabit fiber internet, offering speeds up to 1,000 mbps, is 100 times faster than traditional internet service. The Hopkinsville-based company will be the first to make gigabit fiber internet service available city-wide and joins a handful of U.S. cities providing such a service.

This is one of the largest fall festivals in Northern Virginia, drawing crowds of up to 35,000 people! Just a heads up for our 14th Annual 28th St. Metro Cruise happening on August 24th and 25th. This car event covers the entire 13 miles of 28th St. from Granville to Cascade.
We draw over 16,000 classic cars and over 275,000 people for this weekend event. There are bands, food, non food vendors and plenty of beautiful cars. On Saturday at noon we crown Miss Metro Cruise with a Pin Up Girl Contest. A family fun event.
The 28th St. Metro Cruise is presented by the Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Rapids New Car Dealer Association.

Setting up shop: Resources available to help new DeKalb County businesses
When choosing to work in the new DeKalb location of ATI Physical Therapy, Kris Heitzig’s decision was an easy one to make. Heitzig is the director of the clinic, located at 2115 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.
“Why DeKalb County? DeKalb County is the community where I live, it’s the community where I go to church, it is the community were my kids go to school,” Heitzig said.
ATI Physical Therapy is one of the 31 new businesses – out of the 131 total – that joined the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce since January 2017. Six new businesses came to Genoa since 2017. Of the 110 businesses that joined the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce since 2017, 43 were new.
RoseMarie Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, said last year was one of the chamber’s best years for adding new business members.
“Our strength lies in the number and diversity of our membership,” Treml said. “That is why we feel it is so important for us to continually increase our membership numbers as well as focus on the retention of our existing member businesses.”
Matt Duffy, executive director of the DeKalb Chamber, said the question shouldn’t be “Why DeKalb County,” it should be “Why not DeKalb County?”
“We don’t want businesses to start and fail, and we think that by having more information easily available for business starters will help them succeed,” Duffy said. “By having resources and information, like demographics and statistics, readily available, they can do some research and take their business even further.”
One of the resources available to new and starting businesses is the DeKalb County Business Incubator program. The incubator, located in the Creative Center of the Community Outreach Building, 2500 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb, helps foster and support the initial development of emerging entrepreneurs’ ideas by providing a rentable professional office space. The incubator also is new to DeKalb County, starting in August 2016. Read more: The Midweek News
Gov. Bevin Awards Kentucky Work Ready Communities Certification to Christian County, Kentucky
Hopkinsville, KY – Gov. Matt Bevin announced on Tuesday that Christian County has been certified as a Kentucky Work Ready Community.
A Kentucky Work Ready Community certification is a measure of a county's workforce quality. It is an assurance to business and industry that the community is committed to providing the highly-skilled workforce required in today's competitive global economy. Through this effort, Kentucky communities can assess their own workforce strengths and follow a process to become certified as Work Ready or Work Ready in Progress.
“We were thrilled to get the designation of being a Work Ready Community”, said Angie Major, Director of Workforce & Education for the Christian County Chamber of Commerce. “I have a passion for helping students find their way to success and for many that means finding good jobs. There are a variety of programs available for both students and adults to find jobs, we just have to continue to foster those efforts and ensure success.”
Many organizations played a role in obtaining the designation to include the Christian County Chamber of Commerce, Southwestern Kentucky Economic Development Council, Workforce Investment Board, Hopkinsville Community College, Christian County Public Schools, Murray State University, along with multiple community, government and industry leaders.
"The Work Ready Certification helps economic development recruiting efforts tremendously in our community and showcases the commitment to workforce said Mark Lindsey, Director of Southwestern Kentucky Economic Development Council. “ Certifications like these demonstrate the effort and willingness from different organizations working together as a team to accomplish this goal."
To become certified, communities must gather local support and commitment and apply for the Kentucky Work Ready Communities designation. Counties have to meet criteria in seven areas: high school graduation rate, career readiness certifications, community commitment, educational attainment, life-skills development, broadband access, and matching workforce supply and demand.
Applications for the certification are reviewed by a panel appointed by the Kentucky Workforce Innovation Board. The panel recommends certification by the board for the counties that meet the criteria. The panel meets four times a year to review applications, which can be submitted at any time.

Reedsburg Chamber of Commerce prepares for May events
The Chamber of Commerce will be hosting two Business After Five events to recognize local chamber member businesses. One will be May 3 at J’s Pub and Grill in Reedsburg which will celebrate its fifth anniversary and May 8 Wonewoc businesses members will be recognized with Beyond Boundaries, joined by the Friends of the 400 State Trail and the Friends of the Baraboo River, Kelly’s Woodfired Bistro and The Market Pizza, Pasta and Ice Cream Parlor where members of the public are welcomed to participate.
“Wonewoc has been really thriving the last few years they’ve got some new business in they are really working together,” said Kristine Koenecke, executive director.
The chamber will host its golf outing, silent auction and dinner fundraiser May 10 at the Reedsburg Country Club which Koenecke said has raised about $5,000 for the Chamber of Commerce to help pay for general expenses.
The Reedsburg Community Wide Garage Sale will be May 17-19. Those looking to register must do so by May 10 so participants and categories they are selling to be listed and placed on a map. Koenecke said it costs $20 to register for the garage sale, which includes a deposit for a sign. Once the sign is returned the $10 deposit will be given back. The maps will be available beginning May 16 the chamber, city hall, Viking Village Foods, the Reedsburg Public Library and Quillin’s Quality Foods. Read more: Reedsburg Times-Press
Wood remanufacturing company Industrial Wood Products is locating several of its existing product lines and capabilities to Vicksburg, Mississippi. The project is a corporate investment of more than $2 million and creates 50 jobs.
Industrial Wood Products of Mississippi will locate industrial component manufacturing operations and a paint line in its Vicksburg facility. The industrial division will include cut-to-length, resawing, ripping, notching and grading capabilities to service pallet and crate manufacturers. The paint line will be used for the company’s existing Rustic Collection product line, which includes pre-stained shiplap boards to be sold in retail stores across the U.S.
“Our company is excited to have chosen Mississippi and Vicksburg as our location for this project. We found in Vicksburg a set of unique location advantages that will be of great importance to our company as we continue to grow our market share and expand our business,” said Industrial Wood Products President Ryan Hilsinger.
“We worked closely with the Mississippi Development Authority and the Warren County Port Commission, and we found them to be agile and pro-business partners that were effective in helping us navigate the site selection process,” he added.
The facility will also allow the company to provide a higher level of service and decrease shipment times to customers across the Gulf Coast region. Industrial Wood Products has committed to fill the 50 new jobs in Vicksburg over the next four years. The company also has two locations in North Carolina.
The Mississippi Development Authority is providing assistance for building repairs and renovations. The city of Vicksburg is providing in-kind assistance to help with water runoff affecting the facility and site.
“Industrial Wood Products decision to open its first Mississippi operations in Vicksburg is a great example of a public-private partnership benefiting the local economy and its citizens through job creation and new investment, both of which are vital to a healthy economy,” Governor Phil Bryant said.

Upon taking office, President Trump has made renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement NAFTA) a cornerstone of his presidential agenda.
As you may already know, the first round of negotiations to re-do the three-nation trade pact concluded last week in Washington. And round 2 of talks are set to take place September 1-5 in Mexico City.
Given the 23-year-old trade deal could be enhanced, the Illinois Chamber of Commerce is seeking comments and information on the areas of NAFTA that have been most beneficial to Illinois businesses and exporters.
We are also interested in comments about potential proposals that may have an adverse or unintended consequence to your business or industry.
Roughly 14 million American jobs depend on trade with Canada and Mexico and $1.3 trillion in trade crosses our border annually. We want the voice of Illinois business to be heard during these negotiations.

VISIT Lake Geneva names new CEO
VISIT Lake Geneva, the official Chamber of Commerce and destination marketing organization for the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin area, has hired Ed Svitak back as president and CEO.
Svitak will be responsible for leading the growth of the development of the area by increasing visits from tourists and business travelers. He will also serve as the hospitality industry's liaison to the business and local community, while growing the impact of tourism on the Lake Geneva area.
He brings more than 30 years of experience directing sales and marketing efforts at hotels and destinations ranging in size from 100 to 1,046 rooms in Illinois, California and Wisconsin. From 2010 to 2013, Ed was responsible for sales, public relations/marketing and revenue generation for the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa. Svitak's most recent roles include leading sales and marketing for Hyatt Regency in Schaumburg and the Hilton in Pasadena, California.
Svitak has been recognized for his work with numerous awards, including the Director of Sales Award by Aimbridge Hospitality in 2016, Director of Sales of the Year in 2011 by Marcus Hotels, Hall of Fame Award Palm Springs Tourism in 2004, and the Sales Person of the Year Palms Springs Desert Resorts CVB in 2001.
He holds a bachelor of science in marketing, with an emphasis on hotel and restaurant management, from Northern Arizona University. A native of Riverside, Svitak and his wife Doreen have three adult children who all reside in California. Read more: Daily Herald

Katie Lopez named 2017 Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives Staff Member of the Year
The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives (KCCE) held their annual awards banquet, Thursday, August 24, 2017 where Mrs. Katie Lopez, Christian County Chamber of Commerce Director of Military Affairs, was named 2017 KCCE Staff Member of the Year.
Lopez holds a Master of Arts in Social Responsibility and Sustainable Communities and a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Social and Behavioral Sciences from Western Kentucky University. A native of Clearwater, Florida, Mrs. Lopez moved to the Fort Campbell, KY region in the summer of 2013 after marrying her husband who was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and has served as the Director of Military Affairs at the Christian County Chamber of Commerce since 2014.
As a military spouse, Katie has been active in numerous volunteer positions throughout her community. Her current and past involvements include, being a board member of the AUSA- Fort Campbell Chapter, Chapter Lead for the Fort Campbell In Gear Career, Treasurer for her husband’s unit FRG, Aaron McNeil House board member, Western Kentucky Workforce Board, Museums of Historic Hopkinsville Board Member and named the 2015 Armed Forces Insurance Fort Campbell Spouse of the Year.
Katie is passionate about creating sustainable military communities and empowering military spouses to actively engage in their communities; she believes that impactful change begins by including military families in to the program development process. Through strategic partnership and networking, Lopez was able to launch the Military Spouse Leadership Program in the fall of 2015.
Through the success of the Military Spouse Leadership Program, Lopez was able to gain recognition of the Christian County community on a national level by being named a Great American Defense Community.
