Chamber changes location Courthouse no longer sought for wine and food festival

The idea of hosting a wine and food festival in Logan County is very much alive, however, location is still up in the air, according to Karen Logan, Executive Director for the Logan County Chamber of Commerce.

Logan and other chamber members attended the March 13th meeting of the fiscal court, along with local vineyard owner Don Davis, asking permission to have the event on the historic courthouse grounds.

Due to the lack of support shown at the March 13th meeting by members of the fiscal court, the chamber has decided to look elsewhere for a location to hold the event.

Although a vote was not taken on the request on March 13th, magistrates Dickie Carter, Barry Joe Wright and Jo Orange expressed they would not be able to support the request.

“I can’t see promoting alcohol on county property,” Carter had said.

Magistrate Jack Crossley and Judge Executive Logan Chick were absent at the meeting.

The chamber board felt a wine and food festival would be a good alternative to offering wine tasting on the Tobacco & Heritage Festival parade day while continuing to support the county’s agri-business.

“The idea was to have this event on a different day than the parade. We feel this event would not only be good for tourism but also allow the chamber to continue to support our local business,” said Logan adding the board believes this event will draw many people to Logan County. “We had thought about the courthouse because it is the center of our county and is very beautiful.” Read more: News-Democrat and Leader

Important Workforce Information for the One Big Career Fair on April 18 from the Champaign County Chamber

One of the most comment themes we hear from our members is that our business community needs a qualified workforce. While there are many ways to achieve this, one thing we can do together is build that workforce with our area youth. This email is a little bit long, but please take a moment to read it.

Your company can meet and interview potential high school candidates for summer employment on Wednesday, April 18 by participating in the One Big Career Fair in the Centennial High School Gym from 4:00–6:00 p.m.

This career fair is hosted by the Champaign Youth Employment Services (YES), Urbana Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), and Champaign Area Relationship Education for Youth (CARE4U). Its purpose is to help students gain real world work experience AND assist local businesses with creating an emerging workforce.

BEFORE YOU SAY – “but we’re not hiring”, consider this: this is an opportunity to bring a student in; teach him/her your industry; maybe get that long, neglected project finished by the student employee AND not have to go through the hassle of on-boarding new employees with all the paperwork.

Here are some details:
  • The Career Fair facilitates placing students from these three community programs into summer youth employment positions with local businesses.
  • The Regional Planning Commission is the employer of record, so you don’t have to add the student to your payroll.
  • Full support to cover student’s salary is available; but employer funding is welcome and encouraged. The more employers who cover their own student’s salary, the more kids can be served.
  • Worker’s Comp and other costs are covered by the organizations through the RPC.
  • You will benefit from the extra help in the workplace; help shape workplace skills for students; and possibly get that one project done that never seems to get done.
  • You will have full support by the school districts or CARE4U employees.
  • The three programs will best-match the students with employers, or you may also choose to interview certain students.
Summer Internship Program Dates:
June 5 – July 15 Urbana SYEP
June 19 – July 29 Champaign YES
June 5 – July 15 CARE4U
June 19 – July 29 CARE4U

We encourage you to participate….we need our local employers to provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable experience in the workforce. And, those students may become your future employees.

Even if you can’t do the Career Fair, you can still sign up to provide a student with a great opportunity this summer.  Please call or email me if you are interested and I’ll send you more information about the programs and how to sign up.

We hope you will sign up today to help build the qualified workforce our community needs!

Thanks,

Mindy

Webb continuing as CEO, president of Madison County Chamber

Dirk Webb will continue in his capacity as president and CEO of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce as the organization continues a restructuring effort.

The board of directors voted to remove the “interim” tag from Webb’s position, choosing to have him remain in the position in a more permanent role.

“Really, what we are saying is we are restructuring and we will be re-evaluating that effort by the end of the year,” chairman Kris Zinszer said.

The Chamber is in the midst of a re-evaluation and reallocation of resources and foundations after several changes in leaderships in the past two years.

Former executive director Dennis Ashley left the Madison County Chamber in November 2017, with Pete Bitar taking over as interim director. Webb was appointed to the post in late December.

Zinszer said the board has been pleased with Webb’s leadership of the chamber: refocusing and simplifying events to better focus on building connections between local business leaders.

Webb pointed to the new Downtown Walk Around program each Thursday at noon as representative of his new approach to the chamber.

“Basically we feel like we are pointed in the right direction and the response has been good, so we are just going to keep going forward,” he said. “Collaboration and cooperation are going to be the watch words.” Read more: News and Tribune

A special partnership began more than two decades ago when the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce joined forces with Cornerstones in a signature annual business and social event that raises funds and showcases community involvement and corporate philanthropy and engagement at its best. Established in 1990, the Best of Reston Community Service Awards Gala honors individuals, organizations, businesses and partnerships in the greater Reston/Dulles community that make distinctive differences in the lives of others.*
This event highlights individuals, organizations and businesses that make our community the unique and marvelous place it is, while raising funds to support the mission of Cornerstones to provide affordable housing and help families and individuals build more stable lives. 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of Reston’s founding and in that special year, the Best of Reston proceeds from a two-year fundraising campaign raised over $1 million that enabled Cornerstones to preserve and secure as affordable forever 50 homes located in one of Reston's village centers just minutes away from the Metro Silver Line and public transit access!
This partnership between the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Cornerstones is just one example of how we are investing to build a vibrant, thriving and connected community, and to model Reston founder Robert E. Simon's vision of a community where all may “live, work, play and serve. More information: Greater Reston Chamber

How you can help bring back the Coast's passenger rail service

Advocates for bringing passenger rail service back to the Coast are asking for help.
In the next few months, the Southern Rail Commission will be working on an application to secure a $20 million dollar grant and matching federal dollars. The money would be used to create Amtrak service from New Orleans to Mobile with multiple stops on the Mississippi Coast.
Tish Williams with the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce said if you support the plan, you can sign an online letter to Gov. Phil Bryant.
"The Governor wants to hear from the people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast," Williams said. "He wants to know if this is important to us and if it is then he will know that he has the support to do what the state needs to do to secure the matching grant that is necessary in restoring the passenger rail service."
Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast CEO Milton Segarra made the case for passenger service, saying multiple stops on the Coast would be a boost for South Mississippi's tourism industry.
"If we could secure another form of getting here by this railroad, then it will increase tremendously the possibility of bringing more people to spend one day or a couple of days on our Coast," Segarra said.
