Chamber, Rapid City welcomes Lakota Nation Invitational athletes with a red carpet

On Tuesday more than 2,500 student athletes met at the Civic Center for the 40th annual Lakota Nation Invitational.

Rapid City's Chamber of Commerce, police department, and many locals welcomed teams to Rapid City on a red carpet.

Although the LNI has been held in Rapid City for the last 38 years, this is the first time the city put out a red carpet for them.

LNI Founder Bryan Brewer is excited by the large number of participants this year and plans on having more next year.

Bryan Brewer says, "This is something where we never, when we started this tournament, we never thought it would be anything like this, grow to this size or anything like that, let alone reach 40 years. We're very excited about that. We are looking to the future. We plan on growing and hopefully Rapid City will grow with us." Read more: Black Hills FOX

Marion Chamber, 8 other local chambers encourages local shopping

The Marion Chamber of Commerce, along with eight other local chambers and many regional businesses, are encouraging Marion residents to shop locally this holiday season.
Teaming up for the “Shop Southern Illinois” program with Marion are the Carbondale, Carterville, Du Quoin, Herrin, Marion, Metropolis, Murphysboro, Union County, and West Frankfort chambers.
They have united to encourage shopping at local businesses, instead of online shopping or traveling out of the area. The project features a strong presence on social media, where Southern Illinois residents can use the hashtag #IBuySI to learn about the benefits of shopping locally.
Marion Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dalus Ben Avi said, “Local business owners are our neighbors and friends, and they deserve our support and our business not only this holiday season, but all year-round.
“Local businesses hire locally, spend their money locally, contribute to their communities and regions and offer everything we need or want this holiday season and every day of the year,” she said.
Many local businesses like Perfectly Posh, are encouraging Marion residents to shop locally.
Tresa Storto, owner of Perfectly Posh, said that local shoppers have been a strong presence in the store.
“(Shopping locally) is important because small businesses here depend on the people shopping locally to stay in business,” Storto said.
“We are local people, we shop locally, we shop at other local businesses, so we keep the money local here. We’re not off shopping in a corporation that’s in another state or another country.”
By making a social media post (or tweet) with the hashtag #IBuySI, residents can be entered in weekly drawings to win prizes. Read more: Daily Republican

Boyle County High School Entrepreneur academy students graduate

To put a final note on the lessons students learned about starting their own businesses, they “graduated” Wednesday from the Boyle County High School Entrepreneurs Academy.

Over the course of five years, Fowler said, 71 students have been through the program, which was initially open to all students in Boyle County. Three years ago, it moved to the Boyle County High School and became limited to the students there. Fowler is working to get it into other schools in the county.

“You’re our future. You’re who’s going to grow the economy in this country. We’re really excited that you’ve all been through this program,” said Paula Fowler, executive director of the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce. “… we’re hoping, five, 10, 15 years down the road, when you might want to start a business, you know how to do it.”
“We have a good collaboration and we have a lot of businesses that help out,” she said. Read more: Advocate Messenger

OneEvent wins Greater Madison Chamber innovation award

OneEvent Technologies Inc., a Mount Horeb maker of a life safety and home and business monitoring software platform, has won the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce’s first-ever Most Innovative Company Award.

OneEvent received the award Wednesday night at an event held by the chamber at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. OneEvent was one of seven finalists that made pitches to an audience of more than 100 people. Audience members texted their votes during the pitches to determine the winner.

OneEvent was co-founded by Kurt Wedig and Daniel Parent. The company continuously links ordinary sensors to the cloud using existing home automation and security systems. Smoke detectors and security systems only alert you once it's too late; OneEvent's systems predict trouble before it happens, the company says.

The company's sensors and algorithms evaluate occurrences such as temperature drops or constriction of water flow in pipes that might portend trouble or the way an increase in carbon monoxide and a gradual rise in temperature might indicate a fire, said Zach Brandon, the chamber's president. Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership: VISION 2022 - ONE VOICE --- Update

HEALTH CARE (Duane O’Neill, Chair)

• The Partnership has facilitated the dialogue among the leadership of
the major healthcare institutions over the past couple of years,
including the development of a strategic plan for the Mississippi
Healthcare Corridor. Recent results include the completion of an
Implementation Plan for the Health Care Corridor.
• An even more tangible achievement was managing the process
to bring the University Medical Center, Baptist Health Systems and
St. Dominic Health Services into a relationship working together
on shared services. The first of many possible ventures is the RFP for
a new collaborate laundry which went out to 14 prospective bidders
in late August. The selection of the contractor will be in late
September. Preference is to have the facility built inside the Health
Care Corridor.

Projected Budget: $1,050,000
Funds Spent (2012-2014): $4,389.36

Stephen Moret Named President, CEO of Virginia Economic Development Partnership

Stephen Moret, president and CEO of the Louisiana State University Foundation, has been elected to serve in the same roles at the Virginia Economic Development Partnership beginning Jan. 1, Virginia Business reported Monday.
Paula Squires writes VEDP’s board of directors approved Moret’s appointment in a 15-to-one vote after he was chosen from a pool of six finalists.
“Having met with Stephen, I agree with the board that his executive management experience in both public and private sector economic development roles make him the right choice to lead VEDP at this critical time for the organization,” stated Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
McAuliffe said Moret will help boost management in VEDP and support efforts to update the organization’s structure and oversight to address findings from the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission’s report, Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
The JLARC report found that Virginia is at risk of fraud and wasted money due to the lack of policy and procedures that govern VEDP’s issuance of financial incentives to economic development prospects, Michael Martz wrote.
Moret previously served as secretary of the Louisiana Economic Development, president and CEO of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber of Commerce and associate at McKinsey & Co. Read more: GOVCONWIRE
