Greater Durham Chamber to Celebrate First Responders on 9/11

The Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce and the Durham community will come together to honor the men and women who serve and protect our communities during the Second Annual First Responders Appreciation Breakfast on Sept. 11 at 8 a.m. at the Durham Convention Center. Invited speaker is retired Durham Police Department Investigator Teresa Gilliam.
Gilliam joined the Durham Police Department in 1997. She served as uniform patrol until July of 2003 and later as part of the motorcycle unit and traffic and crash team.
On July 25, 2012, Gilliam was struck by a tractor-trailer while conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 85. Her cruiser and the vehicle she had stopped were pushed along the guardrail and came to rest more than 100 feet from where the initial impact began.
Investigator Gilliam sustained major injuries and spent several days in critical condition at Duke University Hospital. The driver of the truck was charged with driving while impaired. The following year she received the Purple Heart Medal for being severely injured in the line of duty. Gilliam retired from the police force in August of 2014. Read more: Greater Durham Chamber

Lake City (Michigan) Chamber Rallies To Help Co-Worker After Sudden Loss
A Northern Michigan community is asking for help after one of their own suffered a tragic loss.
The Lake City Area Chamber of Commerce is coming together to help their office secretary after the sudden loss of her husband.
He passed away in his sleep Sunday.
Now, the Chamber staff and Jim Parniske's family are raising money in Lake City for his funeral expenses.
Jim and his wife, Debbie, moved to Lake City two years ago from the Port Huron area.
He passed away in his sleep on a camping trip with his grandchildren.
He was 64 years old.
The Chamber staff say Jim was a great man with a cherished sense of humor.
"This community is awesome. They really are," says Kim Mosher, administrative assistant at the Lake City Area Chamber of Commerce. "When one of our people is going through hard times, this town comes together and helps them out. It's just really nice to see the community come together and help someone who is going through difficult times. The last thing she should worry about is her finances."

Chamber Festival of the Vine features wine, food and music in Geneva

Geneva’s 34th Annual Festival of the Vine kicks off Friday, featuring wine, food, arts and crafts among other attractions in the city’s downtown.
The Geneva Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual autumn harvest celebration, which features a Flavor Fare at Fourth and State streets, where 22 local restaurants provide samplings of their food. And SavWay Fine Wines and Spirits will be serving 23 varieties of wine, Chamber spokeswoman Laura Rush said.
“That’s the most we’ve ever had,” Rush said.
Wines include Tom Gore Chardonnay, described as “creamy, full-bodied” and Jackson-Triggs Vidal Icewine from the Niagara Peninsula in Canada, which is described as a sweet dessert wine with “succulent flavors of honey and peach.”
Foods include steak satay from FoxFire, Baja fish taco from Bien Trucha, stuffed meatballs from Riganato Old World Grille and salty honey pie from The Sugar Path.
“The craft show is back and is always popular,” Rush said. “We could not have wished for better weather ... I think we are going to have big crowds this year. People are going to want to be outside. Read more:

Kentucky Chamber responds to Florida governor wanting to lure jobs away from state

As Florida Governor Rick Scott plans an economic development trade mission to Kentucky to attempt to lure jobs away from the state, the Kentucky Chamber says the commonwealth’s advantages speak for themselves and “we are confident we can hold our own.”
After Florida Gov. Scott made remarks about believing his state is a better place to do business than Kentucky, Scott’s office sent a press release Wednesday detailing an ad that will run on Kentucky airwaves about the economic climate.
In response to the remarks, Kentucky Chamber President and CEO Dave Adkisson released the following statement:
“We’re glad to compete with any state for business, especially those businesses which have already chosen Kentucky as their home.  Their reasons for selecting Kentucky instead of Florida or other states speak for themselves.  Our central location to the United States market, our balanced tax structure and the fact that just last year, Kentucky was named the top state in the country for economic development projects per capita, we are confident we can hold our own.” Read more: Kentucky Chamber
