Dow Chemical employee honored with Bay Area (Michigan) Chamber of Commerce education award

Hampton Township resident Connie Bolzman accepted a Bay Area Chamber of Commerce award for her efforts in education with humility and humor, joking before a crowd of hundreds of local leaders that she'd someday have to meet the person described in her introduction.
"Seeing young people develop to their fullest potential is very rewarding," said Bolzman, a student programs coordinator for Dow Chemical Co. "I love enabling (students) early on to both careers they want … and those they haven't even yet considered."
Bolzman was honored Friday, Nov. 21, with the Jerome L. Yantz Partner in Education Award during the chamber's annual Business & Education Partnership Forum at the Doubletree hotel and conference center in downtown Bay City. Founded in 2004 by the chamber in honor of Jerome L. Yantz, a local certified public accountant and education advocate, the award goes to an outstanding member or business of the Bay Area community that furthers education. Read more: M Live

Quad City Chamber Partnership: Venture School

Cheers to the latest effort to grow Quad-Cities area entrepreneurship.
The folks at the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce, Ignite Quad Cities, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges and the Iowa John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center are partnering for a six-week program called Venture School, and they need the community's help to ensure it can reach and motivate as many new and innovative business start-ups for our community as possible.
The chamber is seeking business owners, subject-matter experts, and people who have served as leaders during a business start-up to serve as mentors for the Fall 2015 program at Rock Island High School. Those mentors will not only periodically attend classes to share their experience and expertise, but be available for students outside the classroom occasionally throughout the semester. Grand Island Chamber event: Nebraska Governor-elect Ricketts lays out priorities

Gov.-elect Pete Ricketts laid out his top priorities to help Nebraska's economy grow at the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Legislative Kickoff on Thursday at the First National Bank. Ricketts said he is "terribly excited" about the opportunities in Nebraska.

He said the agricultural industry is in a down cycle, but with the world's population projected to grow by 2 billion by mid-century, agriculture will have to produce "100 percent more food."
"Seventy percent of that will have to come from productivity and innovation," Ricketts said. Read more: Lexch.com

A lake-area state representative has been honored by the Missouri Chamber of Commerce with the 2014 Legislative Award for Freshman of the Year.

Chamber partnership: Kansas coalition still hopes for congressional action on immigration

As the fallout continues from President Barack Obama’s executive action on immigration, a Kansas coalition pushing for reform maintains comprehensive federal legislation remains the ultimate goal. They worry the administration’s action, rather than pushing the country closer to reform, may set the cause back.
The group, the Kansas Coalition for Immigration Reform, includes the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and the Kansas Contractors Association, among others. Though the group once pushed a state-level guest worker program, its hopes are at the federal level.
The U.S. Senate passed a comprehensive immigration bill last year. When Obama announced his immigration action, he urged Congress to pass its own bill to supersede what he had done. He has frequently criticized the Republican-controlled House for failing to vote on bipartisan immigration legislation that passed the Senate, 68-32.
The bill would have enhanced border security but also went further than Obama’s executive action by creating a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. The president’s action, by contrast, shields immigrants from deportation but provides no mechanism for immigrants in the U.S. illegally to obtain citizenship. Topeka Capital Journal
