Harvel to receive ACCE Life Member Award

Paul Harvel’s more than 46 years of work with chambers of commerce in three states –  from Northwest Arkansas and Fort Smith to Amarillo – has garnered him the most prestigious award in U.S. chamber circles. The American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) has announced that Harvel will receive the Life Member Award, the chamber of commerce profession’s highest individual honor. It is bestowed in recognition of a lifetime of business community leadership and service to the association and chamber of commerce profession. The award will be presented to Harvel during ACCE’s national convention, to be held this year in Cincinnati, Aug. 12-15. Only 42 individuals in the ACCE’s 100-year history have received the award. Tulsa, OKC, Broken Arrow chamber officials, Mayor Bartlett Lead Overseas Aviation Economic Tour

It is considered an international “Who’s Who” gathering of the aviation industry and Oklahoma is represented.
Mayor Bartlett is helping lead a delegation to the Farnborough Air and Industry show outside of London. In an interview with KWGS from the show, the mayor said it is a great chance to make connections and build business relationships important to Tulsa's aviation and aerospace industry.             
In addition to the mayor, chamber of commerce officials from Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Broken Arrow are there, along with the Oklahoma Department of Commerce and several aviation related businesses. Read more: Public Radio Tulsa

Rockford Chamber Inducts Two into Northern Illinois Business Hall of Fame

The Rockford Chamber of Commerce will induct two local business professionals into the Northern Illinois Business Hall of Fame at today’s 104th birthday and annual Founders’ Day celebration at Midway Village Museum.
The Northern Illinois Business Hall of Fame recognizes decades of business leaders that have had a positive impact in shaping the Rockford region. Today, its newest members, Jerry Busse, CEO of Rockford Toolcraft, Inc. and Robert Wimmer, President and CEO of Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc. will be recognized for positively impacting our community.Read more: WIFR.com


Detroit Chamber news: MSU facilitates Binational Economic Growth Agreement
Three binational economic development organizations came together through the efforts of the Michigan State University Center for Community and Economic Development to sign a memorandum of understanding targeting key economic growth sectors between the countries and regions.
The I-69 International Trade Corridor/Next Michigan Corporation, Southwest Economic Alliance of Ontario, and the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce came together on June 11 at the second annual Blue Water Corridor Conference in Sarnia, Ontario to sign the MOU, which targets bio-manufacturing, lightweight automotive materials, and agri-food/food processing initiatives among the regions. On reverse ag tour, chamber shows rural residents ‘what it means to be an urban Nebraskan’

Paul Canaday is no stranger to Omaha. His sister lives here, and his employer, First National Bank, is headquartered here. But Canaday’s trip to Omaha from his hometown of Columbus, Nebraska, over two days last week was unlike any other he’s taken before.
“You come into Omaha for shopping and other things, but to see the things going on here ... the resources we have are gems,” Canaday said.
He was one of 20 Nebraskans, most from places outside of the state’s major population centers, who participated in the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce’s Reverse Ag Adventure Tour. Read more: Omaha.com

Joplin Chamber endorses state, local transportation proposals on August ballot

The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce today announced its support of two sales tax proposals that will be on the ballot next month. One of those is Missouri Amendment 7, a three-quarter cent sales tax hike to pay for statewide road, bridge and other transportation projects. The other is Proposition A, an extension of Joplin’s three-eighth cent Capital Improvement sales tax . Read more: Joplin Globe


Winona Chamber of Commerce, partners want new pedestrian-safety steps

When fall arrives, there may be a new colorful sight to accompany the changing leaves: volunteers in bright yellow shirts holding banners at intersections across Winona, to raise awareness of pedestrian safety.
That’s because the Winona Area Chamber of Commerce’s transportation committee wants to step up awareness of the responsibility of both drivers and pedestrians to keep safety a priority for those crossing streets.
Chamber President Della Schmidt and Chamber transportation committee member Louie Byrne asked the Winona Planning Commission Monday for its blessing in planning a “crosswalk event”: Read more: Winona Daily News


Chamber issue: Iowa business coalition pushes for immigration reform

A coalition of Iowa business leaders called on Congress and the White House on Wednesday to find common ground on immigration reform, presenting poll data that say a majority of people in the state want a fix and even back legal status for people in the country illegally.
"It is vitally important for Congress and the administration to modernize our broken immigration system to reflect today's realities and address the current and future workforce needs of our economy," said Jay Byers, chief executive of the Greater Des Moines Partnership.
