A survey conducted by the Kauffman Foundation and Thumbtack.com ranked Iowa sixth in the nation for Small Business Friendliness due to its small business licensing rules.
Brian Dalziel, Iowa Lakes Corridor vice president, suggested small business friendliness plays a large part in the success of new start-up ventures.
"As a business person, I have only owned a business in Iowa, but I have worked with business owners out of state, as well," Dalziel said. "From working with those other businesses, I can say Iowa has a very pro-business philosophy and its regulations reflect that."
He continued, "Regulations are meant to be a small business' friend, such as OSHA regulations and fire safety regulations. We recognize those as safeguards for businesses. Unnecessary regulations can be burdensome and expensive, costing a small business time and money." Read more: Spencer Daily Reporter

Grand Island Chamber Spotlight: Documentary Puts Farmer on the Big Screen

From a poultry farmer in Georgia to a corn grower right here in Nebraska, the film “Farmland” follows six farmers helping feed the world, and dozens of people got to see it at a special screening in Grand Island on Thursday.

Food was the price of admission for the film about food. The Grand Island Chamber of Commerce’s Ag Council brought the documentary to the big screen at the Grand Theatre and asked movie-goers to bring canned goods to pay for tickets.

“Just another way to tie it back to ag,” says Valerie Bren, the chamber’s Workforce Development Coordinator. “This is your food, this is where it comes from, and then we’re going to be donating that to local food pantries in Grand Island.”

Dave Adkisson, Kentucky chamber chief executive officer, said in the teleconference that he believes this is the first time an analysis like this has been done to show the state as several parts and not just as a whole. Read more: Park City Daily News

Chamber news: Getting Minnesota’s recycling rate to budge

Gardner sees composting as the next wave of recycling. Part of the reason is that 31 percent of the state’s waste stream is composed of organics, the most of any category, according to a 2012 report by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. The remaining waste sources include paper, plastics and “other,” a grab bag of everything else.
Businesses are a big part of the problem and have to be a big part of the solution, according to Jill Curran, executive director of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce’s Waste Wise Foundation in St. Paul. Any businesses producing food waste — from restaurants to high-rise office buildings — have plenty of compostable material. The Waste Wise program is currently working in St. Paul with the owners of the Securian Building, 400 N. Robert St., on collecting food waste for compost. Read more: Finance & Commerce
