Pat McGaughey: What can a Thank You note bring?

If you want to find out what's important to your individual board members, buy a stack of thank you cards and envelopes and ask them to write your Chamber or Association, a quick "Thank you" note in their own words.

Tell them they can pick any feature or benefit to write about but it must be one they have taken advantage of in the last year. Let them know it only has to be a sentence or two and they only have three minutes to write it, sign it, and put it in the envelope.

If you are in a planning session, open them and read them. If you're in a monthly board meeting, tell them you will open them and read them next month before the meeting starts. Watch what happens when some 'new truths' start appearing. Source: Chamber Mentor

MMAC partnership: TPI aims to boost manufacturing productivity by 40 percent

Wisconsin manufacturers are being called upon to lead the charge to improve productivity, to boost the state’s economy.
“Productivity equals prosperity,” said Lee Swindall, vice president of sector strategy development with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC).
The WEDC has joined the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership (WMEP) and the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce (MMAC) to address drains on productivity.
Together, they have launched the Transformation Productivity Initiative (TPI), a diagnostic assessment and strategy implementation with the goal of reaching a dramatic 40 percent productivity improvement within 18 months.
“It’s very ambitious,” Swindall said. “But we’ve been literally flat in manufacturing productivity since 2004. I was flummoxed. We have a major productivity problem.”
What’s more, the combination of rising real wages and declining productivity is a recipe for inflation, he added.
The manufacturing sector is being targeted because it is responsible for almost 19 percent of the state’s total GDP, and manufacturing employment makes up over 16 percent of the state’s workforce.
But Wisconsin ranks 33rd in productivity performance, according to Swindall.
“We have a responsibility to do this. We need to start attacking it now,” he said.
Various diagnostic pathways will be examined through the TPI program, including supply chain management, enterprise resource utilization, technology, human capital management and return on new investment.
An initiative already underway showcases a successful effort to boost productivity. The WMEP’s Profitable Sustainability Initiative recognizes the connection between sustainability and efficiency.
Swindall noted that PSI had its early skeptics, but has proven highly successful.
“Many of the companies we approached early on about PSI said you aren’t going to achieve much,” Swindall said. “But it got companies to change. We know there are opportunities there with TPI.”
The beta phase of the program is expected to be completed within a year
“I detect unusually high enthusiasm for this,” Swindall said. “I’m gratified that the world is waking up.” Read more: BizTimes.com

Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce Launches New Brand and Logo

Naperville, IL. (January 30, 2017) – The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce (NACC) introduced a new brand and logo at the organization’s Inaugural Gala on January 20, 2017.  The rebranding reflects both the evolution of the NACC as well as its vision for the future.

“As a Chamber, it is imperative that we position ourselves as the region’s best business resource.  We must continue to deliver on our commitment to bold thinking and innovative resources to maintain relevancy as an organization,” said Nicki Anderson, NACC President & CEO.  “Our new brand reflects our commitment to collaboration, inclusiveness and our desire to be an agent of change in the world of business and advocacy.”

The rebranding of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce represents its successful and ongoing transition to a progressive chamber of commerce.  The NACC worked with Paul Gregory Media to define its core brand promise and how the promise can be used to support member experience.  The goal of the rebranding was to move beyond the outdated NACC image and reflect a progressive organization.  Bold thinking for business is the true heart of the new brand.

NACC’s brand colors were carefully selected to be progressive and bold, but not trendy.  Primary colors were chosen along with a fourth color, green, for freshness, growth and commerce.  The new logo features a total of seven colors with three colors which trick the eye into perceiving the logo as semi-transparent.  The tertiary colors can only be achieved through an additive process, which only can be realized on digital mediums; a further nod to a progressive-thinking brand.

NACC’s new tagline is, “Business forward.”  The tagline is clear and concise; distinctly stating the true purpose of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce.

“In the ever-changing world of business and technology, now is the time to shift the perception of Chambers and to illustrate our own dedication to innovative business practices and advocacy for each one of our members and the community,” stated Anderson.   Contact: Lauren Holtzlholtz@naperville.net 630.355.4141

Pine Belt economy solid, Area Development Partnership president says

Around 5,000 new jobs have been added in the Pine Belt over the last five years, Area Development Partnership President Chad Newell told a group during a luncheon Thursday.

"From a pure economic perspective, things are really good here," he said.

The First's 2017 Economic Outlook Forum brought about 300 people to the Thad Cochran Center at Southern Miss. Newell was one of the forum's keynote speakers.

With the added jobs, the area's unemployment rate is 5 percent, down from 9 percent five years ago, which is close to the national average of 4.7 percent.

"The region's economy is strong," Newell said.

The gross domestic product of the greater Hattiesburg area rose from $4.9 billion in 2011 to $5.6 billion in 2016, bringing around $700 million more in value goods and services, he said. The Pine Belt's GDP grew about 3.9 percent in the last three months alone.

"We are growing at a faster pace than the state," Newell said. "We play a significant and certainly a major role in the Mississippi economy."

Tech Jobs Lead Strong Year For Indy Region

The regional business attraction arm of the Indy Chamber says the tech sector led the way for economic development growth in 2016. The Indy Partnership reports the region saw $1.2 billion in capital investment and 11,100 new jobs in 2016, with one in three being in tech.
The chamber cites several tech jobs announcements in 2016, including Salesforce adding 800 jobs, Octiv adding 225 jobs and Braden Business Systems adding more than 90 jobs in Fishers. Overall, 27 projects accounted for more than 3,300 tech jobs in the region.
"Indy continued to build a more innovative economy in 2016, and it shows clearly in our attraction and retention successes," said Michael Huber, chief executive officer of the Indy Chamber. "Our best is yet to come: We’ve only begun to implement the ‘Accelerate Indy’ strategy, focusing on high-skill talent and a high-tech business climate, and restructuring regional economic development to be more competitive."

However, the chamber says the advanced manufacturing and logistics sectors also played a key role in the region's economic development last year. Nearly 1,000 new jobs came from 23 manufacturing projects and nearly 3,000 logistics jobs were announced, including Arizona-based Knight Transportation's (NYSE: KNX) plan to add 426 jobs in Plainfield. Ransdell honored by Bowling Green Area Chamber; Taylor takes '17 gavel

Western Kentucky University President Gary Ransdell received the Herb Smith Lifetime Achievement Award on Monday night at the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce's 82nd Annual Dinner.
"Julie and I are proud to be a member of this community," Ransdell said at the event at Sloan Convention Center. The longtime WKU president retires from his post at the end of June.
"This community and the university are intrinsically linked," Ransdell said. The more than 500 in attendance gave him a standing ovation.
Since Ransdell arrived at WKU in 1998, he has shepherded $1 billion in new construction and two capital fundraising campaigns totaling $300 million.
The 2017 chamber board Chairman Robbin Morrison Taylor also received the gavel from 2016 chamber board Chairman Mark Iverson.
Iverson said the chamber partners provide financial support to make things happen in the community. He praised the efforts of Ron Sowell, chairman of the South Central Workforce Development Board and vice president for Med Center Health, for his service on the new regional workforce board.
"You are setting a new standard for workforce delivery," said Iverson, general manager at Bowling Green Municipal Utilities.
Taylor, who is WKU's vice president for public affairs, in separate remarks said the 2017 chamber theme will be "Success, Talent and Innovation."
Ransdell said it was rewarding to see a member of his administrative cabinet at the helm of the chamber.
Taylor said efforts in the workforce arena and assistance for chamber partners will help them achieve business success.
"We are going to focus growing our own world-class talent pool," Taylor said. She said that talent pool will be a key to a bright future in southcentral Kentucky.
"Together, we can do it," she said.
Ron Bunch, president and chief executive officer of the chamber, said 15 economic announcements in 2016 led to $500 million in investment and 700 new jobs. That was on the heels of $1 billion in investment in 2015 and just under 1,000 new jobs planned.
Bunch also praised the efforts of November's career exploration program for eighth- and ninth-graders – the SCK Launch Experience. The interactive experience was an opportunity for the students to see potential career paths with activities held at the NCM Motorsports Park, preceded by classroom work on the most sought-after targeted professions in the region.
The local chamber received four Excellence Awards by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives, was named one of the top four chambers in the nation by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives and completed the sixth speculative building at the Kentucky Transpark during 2016.
