Southwestern Indiana Chamber: I-69 BridgeLink group presses flesh in Washington

A delegation from Evansville and Henderson went to Washington, D.C., last week with the goal of keeping the Interstate 69 bridge project fresh on national officials’ minds.

In recent years, those conversations have often been less about the project’s importance and more about a strategy for getting it done, according to members of the I-69 BridgeLink group who made the trip.

The bridge would be built east of Ellis Park, providing a second point for vehicles to cross the Ohio River and easing U.S. 41 traffic. Cost estimates have ranged from $850 million to $1.4 billion, depending on what route is used around the city of Henderson.

“There’s no such thing as earmarks anymore at the federal level, so we can’t ask (Senate Majority Leader) Mitch McConnell to use his power to pull $1 billion out of the budget to build a four-lane bridge,” said Brad Schneider, Henderson County judge-executive. “But what we can do is keep them abreast of the project and keep them philosophically supportive, and also encourage them, when they are thinking of the big pie of transportation funding they have control over, to make it as big as possible.”

It’s believed that President Donald Trump will bring forth a transportation bill sometime this year.

“A lot of our conversations were on trying to figure out what that might look like,” said Justin Groenert, director of public policy and government with the Southwest Indiana Chamber. “We’re doing everything we can to put ourselves in the best position to get federal help when we need it.”

Members of BridgeLink point to long-standing support of I-69 by Vice President Mike Pence, a former Indiana governor, along with the current leadership of both states. Kentucky has pledged to fund environmental impact studies of the different routes, along with utility studies. Evansville Courier & Press

HCC professor named Kyndle's Educator of the Year

A Henderson Community College professor who takes science, technology, engineering and math opportunities out to girls and underserved populations in the community was honored Friday morning as Kyndle’s 2017 Educator of the Year.
Michelle Chappell, an associate professor of Computer and Information Technologies, received the honor at HCC’s convocation in preparation for the start of the 2017-2018 academic year.
“The Educator of the Year honor is intended to recognize a commitment to excellence and providing superior educational opportunities,” Chuck Stinnett, Kyndle’s vice president of chamber services, said in announcing the award.
Chappell “certainly does that within the classroom” and “continuously participates in professional development focused on instructional strategies,” he said. She utilizes social media and real-world scenarios to help students grasp the material.
She has said that her most memorable experience is when a student recommends her class to other students or sees her out in public and tells her how much they loved her class and teaching style.
A challenge in some career paths is the expectation that a career is appropriate only for certain types of people, whether it be a particular gender or cultural background. Chappell strives to break down such barriers by introducing elements of her profession to people who might never have even considered going to college. Read more: The Gleaner

Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber interest: Port Commission chips in $20K to strategic plan
The Warren County Port Commission is contributing $20,000 toward developing an economic development strategic plan for Vicksburg and Warren County.

Pablo Diaz, port director and executive director for the Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce, said port commissioners approved the allocation at a special meeting Tuesday.

“The $20,000 will match other funding by other institutions,” he said. “The money is being raised by the chamber. The chamber is one of the funding mechanisms, but it is raising the rest of the money from other institutions across the community.”

The port commission and the chamber are looking for a coordinator to work with both organizations toward developing a strategic plan.

“We are looking at several proposals,” he said.
Port commissioners in June discussed the strategic plan.
t the time, Diaz said commissioners and the chamber would hold planning meetings dealing with specific potential initiatives in economic development. “They will encompass an entire vision of what direction we want to concentrate.”

That direction, Diaz said, would be determined by discussions during the planning stages.

“Those (planning stages) are really going to help us prioritize and define the most effective, most important aspects of the type of economic development we want to do.” Read more: Vicksburg Post

#BestChamber practices: Guest Article, Cathi Hight: Get "word of mouth" referrals to grow your membership

In the for-profit world, we know that new customers recruited by existing customers are more loyal and profitable. In fact, studies show that 85% of Likes through social media and purchases are made through referral marketing rather than from advertising. For most of us, we trust the referrals made by friends and friends-of-friends. If you’ve ever used Yelp or Angie's List, you know what I mean.
So, how can we apply these best practices to have our members recruit the best prospects possible? In this age of time poverty, it gets harder to pull off a successful membership recruiting campaign. Our members are reluctant to commit to large blocks of time and our staff resources are stretched to the limits from trying to do much for everyone. Wouldn’t it be great if we could employ our members to help us recruit new members all year long without consuming a ton of money or staff time?
Here are some techniques that are working great for other associations that you might “borrow” and customize for your organization:
  • ·         IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) has developed an awesome Member Get a Member (MGM) program. It provides an easy way for members to refer a peer on the website, and provides testimonials, a list of benefits and testimonials from other members. Members receive incentives for each referral and are provide cash prizes for the top recruiters. Members can also download recruiting coupons to hand out to peers.
  • ·         The National Business Aviation Association provides members with a URL to send to peers that provides a 20% discount on their first year of membership. By using the URL and the code REFERRAL, members are able to pass on the opportunity and savings.
  • ·         American Statistical Association provides referral opportunities on its website that allows members to list multiple nominations and members receive a $10 ASA gift certificate for every new member who joins. ASA staff follow up on the referrals.
  • ·         ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) provides members with downloadable tickets that provide their referrals with six-month, no-obligation “free membership.” Tickets have an expiration date to create a sense of urgency. Prospects have the opportunity to experience the benefits of membership and the staff work to convert these free memberships into paying ones.

Keep in mind that a small percentage of your members are actually going to participate in these MGM programs, so it’s not going to replace all of your recruiting initiatives. Consider these or similar referral tactics as a supplement to your current recruitment programs.
If you can incentivize your current members to refer others, they are likely to bring you referrals who share similar values and attributes. These new members are more apt to contribute, appreciate and stay.
And that's what every association is after, isn't it?

Sincerely,

Kent Wood, Traverse City Area Chamber: A good first half — but much left to do

Halftime is an important segment of many sporting events. It’s an opportunity to re-assess your team’s strategy coming into a contest — figure out what’s worked and what hasn’t — and make necessary adjustments in hopes of prevailing at the end.
The summer season marks the half time of the political year, as lawmakers head home to their districts to talk about their first-half accomplishments and look to what’s ahead. It’s also an opportunity for organizations like the Traverse City Area Chamber and its partners at the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance to review its legislative priorities for the year, check what’s been tackled and re-focus on what still needs to be done.
In terms of accomplishments, it was good first half for the Chamber and the Alliance.
Sticking to its “one size does not fit all” playbook — a business-policy strategy gladly co-opted by our first-term Congressman Jack Bergman that he’s taken to Washington — northern Michigan’s business community ground out several accomplishments in the first part of 2017 (“grind” being the operative term because of the extensive time and effort needed to keep these issues on Lansing’s front burner).
They included the Michigan Thrive bills creating transformational brownfields to help re-develop abandoned and contaminated properties. It was a major accomplishment as Alliance partners worked closely with our region’s lawmakers to re-shape the legislation to make it viable in the smaller communities that make up Northern Michigan. It also has legislators thinking about right-sized solutions that can be effective throughout Michigan’s diverse landscape, and not just major metropolitan areas to the south.
We also helped convince lawmakers to reinstate the "2X" per-pupil funding formula to close the state funding gap for a large majority of our area’s school districts. It was a major accomplishment, as was the increase in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education dollars needed to build our future regional workforce. Another $1 million was secured for the popular Skilled Trades Training Fund used by several area employers to train new employees.
The Chamber also pushed to successfully finalize the multi-year process for funding Northwestern Michigan College’s 21st Century Innovation Center. Read more: Record Eagle

Marshfield Young Professionals, BrightStar Wisconsin Foundation, WEDC and NEWaukee announce $2,000 pitch event winner

A retro-themed classic garage (former home to Hudson’s Classic Grill) in Marshfield was the site of five business pitches Wednesday night. The winning pitch, Tapped, took home $2,000 to advance their business idea.
HATCH is a community-based startup pitch platform that aims to convert strong “napkin” ideas into business plans that launch new companies. Partnerships across the state made this fourth HATCH event a success, bringing together the Marshfield’s Young Professionals, Brightstar Wisconsin Foundation, NEWaukee, and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.
Local organizers chose to highlight the 12 N Central Ave Building, for the event. This garage themed building provided the perfect backdrop for an event focused on perfecting those napkin ideas. The garage saw a sold out crowd of 100+ people. Audience members had the opportunity to vote for their favorite pitches. In addition, a panel of local judges deliberated on the winning pitch. Jurors were: Brenda Dillenburg – Marshfield Campus Dean, Mid-State Technical College; Mark Nelson –  President, Microscopy Innovations LLC; Michael Agarwal – CIO, Prevention Genetics; David Meissner – Retired Business Owner; Karen Olson – Business Development Director, Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Central Wisconsin SCORE Administrator; and Todd Sobotka – Managing Director at BrightStar Wisconsin Foundation.
The winning pitch, Tapped, offers flavor infused, natural maple syrups. Jeremy Solin and his family own a maple farm where they harvest the maple syrup through traditional tapping methods and then infuse the syrup with flavors including- espresso, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and red pepper. Tapped is being offered as a substitute to simple syrups and plain maple syrups throughout various coffee shops and bars in Wisconsin. Read more: UrbanMilwaukee.com

Kentucky Chamber event: Three technologies UPS is using to get ahead

UPS is "a technology company with trucks," according to Matt Capozzoli, vice president of flight operations for UPS Airlines.
Capozzoli spoke yesterday during the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce's annual Business Summit, which took place at the Galt House.

During the appearance, Capozzoli discussed three technologies the company is using.
The first was the company's WorldPort air-cargo sorting hub in Louisville. The operation, which has more than 155 miles of conveyors, uses scanners and other tech to move the average package in and out of the sort in less than 15 minutes.
“That’s pretty quick,” he said.
Capozzoli also spoke about the company's on-road integrated optimization and navigation system — ORION, for short. It uses fleet telematics and algorithms to develop and evaluate routes for the company's drivers.
Finally, he spoke about Roadie, an Uber-like service through which private passenger vehicles and drivers are used to deliver packages. The company received funding from UPS, as the Atlanta Business Journal reported in 2015. Capozzoli described it as an experiment for the company and a service that it's very interested in monitoring.
He also addressed startup culture during the appearance. He was speaking about how the company has a culture that strives toward self improvement and finding new ways of doing things.
“You've got to think like a startup," he said. "You’ve got to be hungry. You’ve got to be lean,” he said.
UPS is Louisville's largest employer, with more than 22,000 workers. In addition to WorldPort, the company has a ground-cargo sorting operation, called Centennial Hub, which is being expanded. It also has a large Supply Chain Solutions campus in Louisville. Louisville Business First

Chamber interest: Take a break from sales tax

The back-to-school sales tax holiday in Mississippi is upon us.
As of 12:01 a.m., shoppers are entitled to a tax exemption on purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear made through 11:59 p.m. Saturday.
The “holiday” is a temporary period when sales taxes are not collected or paid on purchases of specific products and or services. In the Magnolia State, that’s a 7 percent savings.
Officials with the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce are hopeful shoppers will head out today and save money during the tax-free holiday.
“The Chamber strongly encourages our community to visit our many local clothing and shoe stores this weekend to take advantage of the Mississippi’s tax-free days on all shoes and clothes,” said program director Katie Nations. “Even if you’re not buying school clothes, shoppers of all ages can benefit from the tax-free incentive and get some great deals.”
Some of Debbie Smith’s customers at Judy’s II wait until this designated weekend to shop for back-to-school items.
“It’s always good for me,” she said. “I think people put off buying until then. Seven percent isn’t a lot, but it helps.”
Smith said she combines a back-to-school sale with the tax-free event to give customers an added incentive to shop.
“We always have a very busy weekend,” she said. “I’ve had several come in an look and they’re going to come in when they don’t have to pay tax on it.” Read more: Daily Leader

We score all 50 states on more than 60 measures of competitiveness developed with input from a broad and diverse array of business and policy experts, official government sources, the CNBC Global CFO Council, YPO and the states themselves. This year some states were tied. Learn more about our categories and methodology.

★ Georgia snags the No. 2 spot

This year's winner is: WASHINGTON

Washington leads the league in America’s Top States for Business ranking in 2017. The economy grew 3.7% in 2016, nearly two and a half times the national rate. The state boasts the nation’s largest concentration of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) workers, and follows California in the most patents filed last year. The home of Amazon and Costco, Boeing and Expedia, as well as rising stars like space company Blue Origin, Washington has the old and new economies covered. Please share this great opportunity with any veterans that would benefit from the Back to Work Bootcamp. On behalf of Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Rivers Casino and Jewel/Osco we are excited to announce a new initiative that will help local military veterans translate their military skills into civilian jobs.  We are launching an 8-week Boot Camp beginning this fall that will provide military veteran's the tools to be set-up for success and seamlessly transition into the job force.  We are in search of 20 Veterans that have their DD214 papers and were honorably discharged to apply for this amazing opportunity.

The Chamber, along with several members companies' human resource representatives, will select 20 candidates for this special Back to Work "Boot Camp".  At the completion of the 8-week  interactive boot camp each Veteran will receive a career enhancing package valued at over $8,000.  The remaining applicants will also be shared with the committee for hiring consideration.

The Boot Camp is comprised of educational programs that inspire, support and prioritize career readiness.  The workshops focus on a wide range of topics that include Success Stories from Fellow Veterans to Career Exploration, Computer and Social Media, Resume Writing, Company Tours and so much more. We know these Veterans' acquired many skills during their service, but for too many, connecting to the right opportunity to their skill sets is very difficult.

Kellogg Community College earns Battle Creek Area Chamber Recognition for Employee Wellness Program

Kellogg Community College this spring was honored for the College’s efforts in promoting employee health and wellness with major award nominations at the state and
local levels. In April, KCC was honored as one of three finalists in the Healthy Workplace Award category of the 2017 Governor’s Fitness Awards. In May, the College was recognized as one of three finalists for the Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce’s Choose Health Workplace Wellness Award.
The Governor’s Fitness Awards, sponsored by the Michigan Fitness Foundation and the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports, recognize individuals and communities for their commitment to becoming healthier. KCC was recognized with other award nominees at a special Legislative Reception in Lansing and Gala Celebration in Detroit in April.
KCC was a finalist in the ‘large’ category of the Healthy Workplace Awards, which includes organizations of 150 to 999 employees. The award is bestowed on organizations with ‘outstanding programs, who help to create best practices for organizations throughout Michigan to replicate,’ according to the Governor’s Council and Michigan Fitness Foundation.
Organizations considered for the award were evaluated using criteria including policies, procedures, resources utilized (physical, financial, incentives, etc.), executive leadership involvement, culture, evaluation and results and influence on family/community.
The Choose Health Workplace Wellness Award is one of several honors awarded each year as part of the Chamber’s Annual Business Excellence Awards, which ’recognize the achievements of successful local businesses, nonprofits, organizations and industry professionals in the greater Battle Creek area for the contributions they make to the growth and prosperity of the
local economy,′ according to the Chamber. KCC was recognized with other award nominees during an awards ceremony held at the College’s Binda Performing Arts Center on campus in Battle Creek in May.

KCC Athletic Director Tom Shaw, chair of the KCC Employee Wellness Committee, said the College is honored to be recognized at both the state and local levels for its significant investment in the health and wellness of its employees. Read more: The Daily Reporter
