Governor Michael Pence to Visit La Porte Indiana Chamber


Indiana Governor Michael R. "Mike" Pence will meet with members of the Greater La Porte Chamber of Commerce and discuss economic development at a luncheon on Wednesday, October 22^nd.

The public is welcome to hear Governor Pence address the La Porte Chamber at Best Western Plus, 444 Pine Lake Ave, La Porte. Registration begins at 11:15 a.m. Lunch will begin at 11:45 a.m. followed by a speech from the Governor.

Governor Mike Pence is a lifelong Hoosier with legal, small business and policy experience. He was elected the 50th Governor of the State of Indiana in 2012. Prior to being elected Governor, Pence represented Hoosiers in Congress. More information: La Porte Chamber

Two Big Awards Given to Two Northern Michigan Chambers of Commerce: Traverse City Area and Petoskey are winners!

The Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce is very active and now they're getting recognition for what they do. The chamber won Michigan's 2014 Outstanding Chamber of the Year award for the Large Chamber Category. It's their first time winning the award.

Minot, North Dakota Chamber of Commerce's 91st Meeting

The Minot Area Chamber of Commerce first came together back in 1923. Today, the chamber gathered once again for its 91st annual meeting. The chamber honored a few local businesses for their dedication to the community, as well as Bob Gross, the founder of DaySun's Day of Giving.

Lanesboro, MN chamber news: National travel writer to experience Bluff Country

For several months, area residents worked to bring the “10 Day Minnesotan” program to the area.

Syracuse chamber: ‘Welcome’ banners should arrive soon

The long-awaited Welcome to Syracuse banners have been ordered and will soon be hanging all around town.  The Chamber of Commerce has been selling the banners to area businesses and individuals for the last year.

A group of people on a “Mystery Tour” from Iowa will be in town on October 28.  They will tour Headwinds (rain gauge makers), the Otoe County Museum of Memories, have supper at B&Js, and then enjoy accordion music after dinner.  The Syracuse Chamber of Commerce helped the organizers plan the visit.

The Chamber is also looking forward to BRAN riders (Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska) staying overnight in Syracuse in 2015.  Area churches will be serving food to the bike-riders who will stay overnight on June 12-13.  This is a yearly ride with 600 participants who spend a week biking across the state. Officials say they expect this weekend's annual pheasant opener to draw the usual crowd of thousands even after an unusually low harvest in 2013.

Kansas City chamber to unveil 2015 area economic outlook Tuesday 

The 2015 economic outlook for the Kansas City area will be unveiled Tuesday morning at a Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce event.

Economist Frank Lenk of the Mid-America Regional Council will present the chamber’s annual forecast. In addition, area economist Chris Kuehl, of Armada Corporate Intelligence and author of the chamber’s daily business briefing, will share his views on the outlook for business and the economy. Conway CEO Brad Lacy joins Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives board

The Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) announces that Brad Lacy, CCE, IOM, president and CEO of the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce, was recently elected to the association's board of directors. Lacy, who will serve as chair of the association's Chamber of the Year award program, was officially welcomed to the board during ACCE's annual convention in Cincinnati, Aug. 12-15.

Chamber good news: Lafayette, Indiana Hotel Project Set to Begin
The Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Lafayette is about to undergo a $5 million expansion. Officials say the project will add a conference facility and 32 additional guest rooms.

Devry Butcher, the Area General Manager of the Courtyard by Marriott in Lafayette, Indiana, today announced that the hotel is embarking upon a $5 million dollar expansion that will include a brand new, state-of-the-art, 15,500-square-foot indoor/outdoor conference facility and up to 32 additional guest rooms. The site of the conference facility will be on recently purchased land just south of the hotel’s current location on Fairington Avenue and is Phase two of five planned.
“We conducted local market research which showed that people planning meetings and events would like to have better options right here in Lafayette,” said Butcher. “Building the new conference facility is a great opportunity for the Courtyard Lafayette to provide our outstanding services and amenities to groups of travelers and event planners that have been looking for fresh and innovative facilities in the community.” Read more: Inside Indiana Business

Canton Area Chamber Best Practices: IIRA's Business Succession and Transition Planning Workshop Set for Oct. 21

The Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs (IIRA) at Western Illinois University is hosting the workshop "Business Succession and Transition Planning" Tuesday, Oct. 21 in collaboration with the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce and Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Donaldson Community Center, located at 250 South Avenue D, Canton, IL. The workshop is open free to businesses statewide (registration required), as well as to businesses in neighboring states.

According to Jolene Willis, associate manager of IIRA's Illinois Cooperative Development Center, the workshop will be conducted by Steve Barnhart, a technical specialist from the Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC). His presentation will address succession and transition-planning issues encountered by all types of family and closely held businesses, regardless of whether they are in the manufacturing sector. With more than 25 years of organizational development and operations leadership experience, Barnhart provides training and business improvement services to Illinois companies, drawing upon IMEC's state and national resources to help companies increase productivity and remain competitive. Michigan City Chamber inspires via donation to A.K. Smith

 

The "Inspiring Women" Luncheon, an annual signature event for the Michigan City Area Chamber of Commerce, will have even broader impact this year because of donations to the culinary program at the A.K. Smith Career and Technical Education Center. A check from the chamber along with in-kind donations from the Blue Chip Casino, Hotel and Spa are making it possible for Chef Brenda Hitchins, keynote speaker at the "Inspiring Women" Luncheon, to conduct a workshop for A.K. Downtown Owatonna may be added to the National Register of Historic Places, a move that officials say could boost tourism and help local businesses fund future renovation projects.

Vermillion SD Chamber news: Workshop held to give better Germanium view

The second Germanium-Based Detectors and Technologies workshop was held at the University of South Dakota this week. The workshop was hosted by USD because of funding from the National Science Foundation, along with contributions from the University of South Dakota, the South Dakota Board of Regents, the Vermillion Area Chamber of Commerce and Development Company. Niobium mine discussed at Syracuse, Nebraska chamber meeting

NioCorp is a name that is gaining recognition in Syracuse and surrounding areas. The company has been drilling near Elk Creek for a rare metal called niobium. Right now, they are in the planning and analysis phase, but the company believes there’s a high probability of a large mine that would bring hundreds of jobs to the area.

Niobium is mainly used in the form of Ferro-Niobium to produce HSLA (High Strength, Low Alloy) steel, to produce lighter, stronger steel for use in automotive, structural, and pipeline industries. The U.S. imports 100 percent of its niobium needs; 99 percent of it comes from Brazil. Read more: Journal-Democrat

Little Rock Chamber: Arkansas Venture Center Launches Pre-Flight Accelerator Course

The Arkansas Venture Center announced Tuesday the launch of a "pre-accelerator" course for entrepreneurs designed to "fast track their ideas to market."

Syracuse Nebraska Chamber members discuss new mine

A new Niobium mine in Elk Creek was part of the discussion at the August Chamber of Commerce meeting. Niobium is a material that strengthens steel, and there are no mines in the United States. If this mine plans move forward, it could mean growth for Syracuse and other surrounding towns.  An estimated 600-1000 construction workers could arrive in the area to begin construction as soon as spring. Susan Redden: Local Joplin, Missouri lawmakers get high scores in chamber ranking

Though they didn’t go along with the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry on one major issue — expanding Medicaid — Joplin area legislators were in lock step with the statewide organization on economic issues during the most recent legislative session.

That’s according to the recently released “2014 Vote Record,” an annual ranking by the chamber designed to give the business community a measure of how lawmakers voted on a list of economic issues.

Three local lawmakers — Sen. Ron Richard, Joplin; Rep. Charlie Davis, Webb City; and Rep. Bill Lant, Pineville — received 100 percent ratings, “voting in support of Missouri employers in every case,” according to Dan Mehan, Missouri chamber president and CEO. Read more: Joplin Globe
