Crossroads Chamber establishes new headquarters
The new headquarters for the Crossroads Regional Chamber of Commerce is expected to produce a number of benefits.
The chamber recently bought a vacant facility on 84th Drive near Merrillville Road in Merrillville for its new operations center.
Sue Reed, president and CEO of the chamber, said renovation of the building will begin in coming weeks. The organization is expected to move to the site by the middle or end of August, Reed said.
In addition to establishing an expanded work area for the chamber, the project sets out to provide more benefits to its members. Among them is the creation of a community room that could be used by nonprofit organizations and small businesses for meeting space.
Reed said the Crossroads' current facility on Taft Street near 93rd Avenue is a great space in a nice location, but it doesn't meet all of the chamber's operational needs.
The organization rents the Taft Street site, and chamber leadership decided to get into a situation in which it owned its headquarters.
Reed said that deepens its roots in the community. It also reduces operational costs because the chamber's mortgage payment is less than its rent, she said.
The property purchased by the chamber was a former credit union and had been vacant for about five years, Reed said. Merrillville officials are pleased to see building become occupied again. Read more: The Times

Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce to host Community Clean Up Day
Saturday is Earth Day, and the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Community Clean Up event at McCormick Park, 427 W. Virginia St., Crystal Lake.
A shredding truck as well as electronic and shoe recycling will be available on-site.
The Crystal Lake Police Department also will provide prescription drug take-back services. Donations to Home of the Sparrow will be accepted.
Games, activities and free breakfast and lunch will be provided for all volunteers.
Used or torn American flags will be collected and retired in accordance with the Flag Code.
Off-site Saturday, you can recycle used motor oil and tires at Douglas Automotive, 123 E. Virginia Road in Crystal Lake.
The cleanup event goes from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mount Vernon-Lee #ChamberPride: Volunteers help tidy local roads
Despite heavy rain Saturday morning, 50 volunteers participated in Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce’s annual Route 1 cleanup, which helps keep roadways around Belvoir clear of trash.
Volunteers, some from Belvoir, collected 20 bags of trash and a tire tread, according to Holly Dougherty, chamber executive director. She said the event could not happen without volunteers’ hard work. She thanked the volunteers and others who helped, including Fayez Elserafi, who’s a shuttle driver for IHG on Belvoir.
“He is just wonderful,” Dougherty said. “He has helped out each year and always knows what to do. He gives out bags and always makes sure the volunteers have water. He is just a big part of this whole cleanup effort.”
Elserafi said after the volunteering, “I do this every year, because I love to help the community. I’m so glad I can help and I love that I see more and more volunteers helping every year.” Read more: Inside NOVA
Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce: Gateway Technical College Opens New Kenall Protective Training Center
Gateway Technical College opened its new Kenall Protective Services Training Center on Friday, April 28, 2017. The center will provide a state-of-the-art training site for Gateway’s law enforcement academy, as well as professional and ongoing training for area law enforcement agencies. It includes newly remodeled tactical training areas, added classrooms, a 12-lane shooting range and a crime scene investigation lab.
Gateway Technical College named the Kenall Protective Services Training Center in recognition of the Kenall company’s donation of $250,000 to the Gateway Promise program. The center and other specific training sites will also provide demonstrations of situation-appropriate lighting solutions.
Gateway Technical College collaborates with communities in Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties to ensure economic growth and viability by providing education, training, leadership and technological resources to meet the challenging needs of students, employers and communities. HGTV Hosts: Show Is '100 Percent Positive' About Mississippi
The hosts of a new HGTV show say their program "Home Town" is shining a positive light on their home state.
Erin and Ben Napier live in the south Mississippi city of Laurel, population 18,800, where they own a downtown general store focusing on American-made goods.
She is a graphic artist who has blogged about the blessings of life, and he is a woodworker with a history degree and a lumberjack beard.
In their show that premiered in March, the couple restores old houses with high ceilings and comfortable front porches.
The Napiers spoke Thursday to hundreds of people in Jackson during a meeting of the state chamber of commerce.
