Marion Chamber: Vaccine Update

As you know, yesterday, the U.S. Department of Labor issued its Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) that requires businesses with at least 100 employees to ensure vaccination of their workers or, for those workers who are unvaccinated, masking policies and weekly testing.

The Department of Labor has provided several fact sheets and FAQs, which can be found here. While these documents provide useful information, there is much more detail in the full regulatory text. That's why earlier today, the U.S. Chamber hosted a special vaccine mandate briefing, which you can re-watch here.

In addition, the U.S. Chamber also created an easy-to-digest document detailing the facts on the ETS for COVID-19 vaccinations. Click here to download the fact sheet.

Kentucky Chamber: Bourbon Tariffs Dropped As EU And United States Settle Trade War

Following a multi-year struggle, the tariffs on Kentucky bourbon have been lifted as a result of an agreement between the European Union and the United States.

The United States and European Union have been in a trade war since 2018, when the former imposed a 25% tariff, or tax on imports, on European steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum under then-President Donald Trump. The European Union retaliated with tariffs on American products, including a 25% tariff on American bourbon whiskey.

Monroe County Chamber newsletter: Retailers Are Wooing Workers With Perks From Flexible Schedules to Free College Tuition in a Tight Labor Market

Merchants including Walmart, Macy’s and CVS are looking beyond wages to attract talent in a competitive environment, offering flexible schedules and gym memberships to career advancement training.

Walmart is seeking to offer benefits beyond higher wages, such as free college tuition and training. — Walmart
Why it matters:
In order for businesses to attract talent in a tight labor market, raising wages for entry-level jobs is just part of the equation: Workers today seek scheduling flexibility and training for career opportunities, too.
Many large retailers are touting added benefits such as free tuition and the ability to advance quickly.
Young consumers in particular appreciate the ability to apply for jobs via text or online, such as the virtual employment screenings offered by CVS Health.

In today’s extraordinarily tight labor market, retailers are reworking their recruiting strategies in a bid to position themselves more favorably to potential employees.

Although retail hiring trended up slightly in September, with 56,000 retail jobs added according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, many retailers report ongoing hiring challenges despite raising starting wages for entry-level employees.

While offering competitive wages remains important, workers have also had a chance to reconsider their priorities during the pandemic and are seeking jobs that offer scheduling flexibility so they can better enjoy their personal lives, training that will help them advance in their career paths, as well as other benefits, said Tom Hill, a partner at Axiom Consulting Partners.

In addition, most retailers are limited in terms of the hourly wages they can afford to pay their workers, making these other incentives especially important in the current environment, he said.

“Big retailers, quick-service restaurants and distribution centers—mostly [from] Amazon—have set the market for pay for all retail,” Hill said. “What we advise clients is that you can only pay so much in order to hit some of those pay levels that some of those organizations are setting right now. What other retailers need to do is think about how they can compete for talent using other components of an employee value proposition.”

Carol Stream Chamber: Frazzled?

Knowledge is a skyscraper. You can take a shortcut with a fragile foundation of memorization, or build slowly upon a steel frame of understanding. - Naval Ravikant

My superpower is laziness.

Some of my best ideas were generated by my absolute distaste for doing any pointless work. Necessity is not nearly as inventive as laziness.
When my math-teacher father preached the gospel of understanding rather than memorizing, I was an instant convert. It appealed to my laziness.

Not only was it easier to understand new concepts than to memorize the associated formulas, but it also avoided the need for endless review before an exam.

I wasn’t just a believer; I was an extremist.

I asked “Why?” more than any four-year-old. Some teachers loved it; others were as annoyed as the parents of those four-year-olds. But I didn’t care. My laziness drove me to understand. Memorizing was too much work.

Understanding is also more robust than memorizing.

A memorized process breaks down if a single step cannot be recalled. An understood process can be recreated if needed.

As I have gotten older, I have continued to ask “Why?” I’m just as lazy as ever, but now I am also a believer in understanding for its own sake.

Life is just more interesting when we are operating from understanding. “Why” is more motivating than “How.”

(I do respectfully disagree with Naval on one point. It is faster to understand than to memorize. At first it may seem slower, but, in the end, it is more efficient and faster.)

Today, don’t settle for “How.” Channel your inner four-year-old. Keep asking “Why?” —Rod Pickett

Five Regional Organizations to be Honored at 16th Annual Celebration of Regional Growth Awards

Lansing, Mich. – Five organizations will be honored for their commitment to the Lansing region at the 16th annual Celebration of Regional Growth (CORG) Awards, taking place Tuesday, Nov. 9 at the Kellogg Center Hotel and Conference Center in Lansing. This year’s CORG honorees include Allen Neighborhood Center, Bekum America, High Caliber Karting and Entertainment, Lansing Board of Water and Light and McLaren Greater Lansing. All five organizations are recognized for investments that are making a transformational impact in the community.

The luncheon will take place as part of Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Lansing Economic Club. The CORG Awards is an annual event presented by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. This year’s luncheon is sponsored by PNC Bank and Loomis, Ewert, Parsley, Davis & Gotting, P.C. Consumers Energy will serve as the video sponsor.

“The investments by these five organizations represent the amazing transformation that is taking place throughout the Greater Lansing region,” said Tim Daman, president and CEO, Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. “The combined investments are transforming an urban neighborhood and a suburban shopping center, and demonstrating national leadership in health care, clean energy, international trade and advanced manufacturing.”

2021 CORG Award Honorees:

The Allen Neighborhood Center (ANC) is a dynamic hub where Lansing’s Eastside neighbors access programs focused on health, food security/access, youth development, entrepreneurism, job skill training, corridor revitalization, and neighborhood capacity-building.

ANC’s most ambitious project todate is the $11 million Allen Place, a mixed-use development converting the complex at the 1600 block of East Kalamazoo Street in Lansing, Michigan, into Allen Place, a comprehensive community space providing 21 units of mixed-income housing along with commercial space, integrative services and programming.

Bekum America has long been a national leader in the blow molding industry. Bekum’s expansion of its Williamston production facility and corporate headquarters also enhances its position as a global trade leader. The new facility adds 38,000 square feet of manufacturing and 7,400 square feet of office space to Bekum’s existing 115,000 square foot facility. The new addition was designed by c2ae and was built by Wieland. The new expansion will allow Bekum America to increase machine output, shorten lead times, and continue expanding the workforce. Bekum’s manufacturing team proudly shipped the first machine from the new machine assembly hall in May.

When High Caliber Karting and Entertainment opened its indoor go-karting, ax throwing, gamified entertainment center and bistro in the Meridian Mall, it changed the concept of what going to a mall is all about. Over the past two years, High Caliber has challenged its visitors to “Punch Boredom in the Face.” High Caliber Karting has taken its game to another level, recently opening a $2 million, 25,000-square foot expansion, includinga new bar, 16 additional lanes of gamified axe throwing, 15 lanes of throw bowling and two VIP rooms.

When the Lansing Board of Water and Light (LBWL) fired up its recently completed natural gas-fired Delta Energy Park, it took a significant step in its drive towards coal-free power. Located at the Erickson Power Station in Delta Township, the new plant will replace both BWL’s coal-fired plants, Eckert which was retired in 2020 and Erickson Power Stations, which willgo offline in 2025. Retiring both plants will make the BWL become the largest utility in Michigan to generate coal-free power by 2025, reducing its carbon emissions by 80 percent.

McLaren Greater Lansing (MGL) is a few months away from officially entering a new era in health care. Workers are putting the finishing touches on McLaren’s $600 million comprehensive health care campus, being developed at the MSU Foundations’s University Corporate Research Park, located between Collins Road and U.S. 127. MGL plans to begin seeing patients at the 240 bed, 500,000-square-foot facility in March 2022. The McLaren campus will house a state-of-the-art hospital, cancer center, ambulatory, and other facilities to support health care delivery.
