Christian County Chamber event:
McConnell speaks on defense, foreign policy challenges
Whoever is elected
president in November will face significant issues with defense and foreign
policy, U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell said to a group at the Christian County
Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday.
The Republican senate
majority leader criticized how the policies have been handled under President
Barack Obama’s administration, adding he can’t think of a single place in the
world that is better off today than they were at the beginning of Obama’s
administration.
“I don’t have much good to
say about the way the defense and foreign policies have been conducted in this
administration,” McConnell said. “… We’ve been trying to restore defense
spending, but the challenge there is that for every dollar of defense we put
back, our Democratic friends want to put a dollar in the domestic fund.”
He went onto to say if
voters are happy with how the country is running, they should vote for Democrat
Hillary Clinton. McConnell then said Republican Donald Trump “is the only thing
that offers an opportunity to go in a new direction,” and later told the voters
to “turn off the personality contest.”
“When you look at the
polls, people don’t seem to like either one of them,” he continued. “But this
is a choice. So what I recommend to all of you, if you want to turn off the
personality contest, just ask yourself whether you’re satisfied with where
America is. If you are, you ought to vote for Hillary Clinton. If you aren’t,
you shouldn’t.”
McConnell said the
country’s allies in the Middle East no longer trust the United States, and that
along with vacuums left by war directly contributed to the rise of ISIL.
He did, however,
compliment the president on his decision to leave troops, around 9,000, in
Afghanistan to help prevent “any back tracking.” McConnell did slid in a dig
though, saying it took some pushing to get the president to make the decision.

Kentucky Chamber releases federal agenda ahead of Congressional Forum
Ahead of
its inaugural Congressional Forum, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce has
released a federal agenda detailing the national legislative priorities of the business
community.
The
Kentucky Chamber not only advocates on behalf of business at the state level,
but also in the nation’s capital where congressional and executive-branch
decisions have a direct impact on Kentucky businesses.
Leading
into the agenda, the Chamber states that free enterprise creates jobs,
opportunity and a successful business climate. The Kentucky Chamber seeks to
advocate for federal policies that will result in economic growth, fewer
government regulations and encourage policymakers to expand – not limit – job
growth and economic opportunity through the decisions they make.
Areas of
focus in the federal agenda include tax and entitlement reform, health care,
education, overtime regulation, energy and environment, international trade,
immigration, legal reform and more.
The
Chamber’s Vice President of Public Affairs, Ashli Watts, will discuss the the
agenda during the Congressional Forum set for August 29 at the Galt House in
Louisville.
The event,
presented by Pikeville Medical Center, will give the business community access
to legislative leaders and a chance to hear detailed accounts of the issues
happening at the federal level without leaving the comfort of Kentucky.
Featured
speakers will include Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, U.S. Rep. Andy Barr
of Lexington, U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth of Louisville, U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie of
Bowling Green and retiring U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield of Hopkinsville. Read

NKY Chamber’s Eggs ‘N Issues ‘Made
in Northern Kentucky’ focuses on sustainability, workforce
Environmental sustainability and workforce development were hot
topics at the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Eggs ‘N Issues “Made in
Northern Kentucky” panel discussion Tuesday at Receptions banquet facility in
Erlanger.
Dan Tobergte, president of Northern Kentucky Tri-ED, moderated
the discussion, which focused on the key role advanced manufacturing companies
play in the region’s economic picture. The panel included Tony Canonaco
president and CEO of Balluff Inc., Ben Schawe, Mazak vice president of
manufacturing, Chuck Thomas, site manager for Celanese Corporation and Eric
Wolff, vice president, manufacturing with L’Oreal.
Tobergte said in the early 90s conventional wisdom suggested
manufacturing was on the decline and service industries were the future.
“I am so glad that we did not listen to that and did not follow
that path,” Tobergte said. “We kept manufacturing as a target industry…and it’s
paid off very well.”
There are more than 20,000 people directly involved in
manufacturing in just over 200 companies in Northern Kentucky. More than 58
percent of the primary industry firms that Tri-ED deals with are manufacturing
based.
In the last five years alone, 74 location or expansion projects
in Northern Kentucky have been responsible for $950 million in capital
investment.
Wolff said L’Oreal is now the largest beauty company in the world.
It produces 1.2 million shampoos and conditioners at its Florence facility
every day and has a target number at the plant of 2 million. Read more: Northern Kentucky

Greater Owensboro Chamber of
Commerce Rooster Booster Breakfast September 1
The Featured Speaker, Earl
Hewlette, is CEO of Charleston, South Carolina-based Terressentia
Corporation, owner of the new O.Z. Tyler
Distillery in Owensboro.
Since joining Terressentia in 2007,
Hewlette has overseen the dynamic growth of this company that is situated at
the intersection of tradition and technology. Over the past 8 years, annual
revenues for the distilled spirits company have grown from $7 thousand to $20
million.
Terressentia was formed in 2006
after a chemist and architect began looking for a way to mature whiskey in a
shorter period of time, as compared to spending years in a barrel. They
discovered a safe, sustainable way to use ultrasonic energy to remove
harsh-tasting impurities and reveal better taste and aroma in a variety of distilled
spirits. The company was founded around this natural process that has been
patented under the name TerrePURE.® The team at Terressentia, applies the
TerrePURE® process to a wide range of distilled spirits including whiskey
(bourbon and rye), gin, vodka, tequila and rum for the private label, private
brand, and global bulk spirits markets. The superior tasting products are
winning over not only consumers, but judges in international spirit
competitions.
In 2014, the company purchased the
former Medley Distillery and renamed it in honor of and as a memorial to the
co-inventor of the TerrePURE® process, O.Z. Tyler. After two years of
renovation, Kentucky Bourbon is now being produced at the historic distillery
site. When fully operational, the O.Z. Tyler Distillery will be turning out
30,000 barrels of Kentucky Bourbon annually.
