Illinois Chamber Professional Digest October, 2016; Governor Bruce Rauner in Marion for Chamber lunch

Illinois Chamber Professional Digest
 October, 2016

Good morning, Chamber world! It’s going to be a GREAT week!

Governor Bruce Rauner in Marion for Chamber lunch

Gov. Bruce Rauner is set to be the big name at a Marion Chamber of Commerce lunch Friday.
Rauner’s southern Illinois visit to the chamber’s second annual Legislative Summit comes the same day he’s set to appear in the parade opening the Du Quoin State Fair later in the day.
Marion Chamber Executive Director Dalus Ben Avi said Rauner will join several other lawmakers and officials in giving five-minute speeches to as many as 200 business leaders.
A Rauner spokesman confirmed the visit.
Most of the participants are planning to take questions from the crowd, but Rauner isn’t likely to, Ben Avi said.
The event will happen a little more than 70 days before the November election and at a time when local candidates have already been flooding the TV airwaves with advertising.
The chamber’s first legislative summit last year drew about 150 people. This one was organized by Hayden Gardiner of South Porte Bank and Mary Jo McCurdy of First Southern Bank, Ben Avi said. Read more: The Daily Republican

Chamber interest: Illinois waterways responsible for 1.7 million jobs, study shows

Illinois waterways contribute to more than 1.7 million jobs and $102.5 billion in wages, according to a report released by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce Foundation about the Illinois River's impact on the economy.

“Commercial navigation and our inland waterways are unsung assets of our transportation networks. This report identifies not only that they are a significant source of employment for Illinoisans across the state with over $102 billion in annual wages but that with additional investment, these benefits can grow,” Benjamin Brockschmidt, executive director of the chamber's Infrastructure Council, said.

The study, called "Final Report: An Economic Impact and Cluster Analysis of Illinois River Lock and Dam Facilities for Beneficial Users" was prepared by the Economic Development Research Group Inc. along with the Center for Transportation Research at the University of Tennessee.

“According to a recent U.S. Department of Agriculture analysis, more than half of U.S. soybeans are destined for export markets, and around half of those soybean and soybean co-product exports are moved by barges on the inland waterways,” Illinois Soybean Association Director Paul Rasmussen said. “This groundbreaking research helps quantify the critical importance of the Illinois River. Its natural and man-made systems of the Illinois River support our communities in many ways."

Rasmussen said the Illinois River passes through or touches 22 counties, and nearly 2 million jobs in the state are tied to the smooth operations of the river.

"The economic information gleaned from the study clearly shows the importance of our inland waterway transportation system to Illinois and surrounding states," Tom Mueller of the Illinois Corn Marketing Board.said. "This will prove to be invaluable as we continue to advocate for future investments."

The report highlights the contribution of the Illinois River and Chicago Waterway System to the state’s chemical industry.

“Our industry is a robust provider of over 45,000 jobs in Illinois with an average annual wage of above $112,000," Mark Biel, executive director of the Chemical Industry Council of Illinois, said. "These great jobs depend on the open and continuous movement of goods on Illinois’ waterways.” Read more:

Geneva Chamber of Commerce brings the flavors of fall

Reading the paper or watching TV, you can hardly miss all the back-to-school ads that have been trying to capture our attention since July 5.
Is this your sign that autumn is approaching? Or is it when the kids officially started school? Maybe it’s the colors changing or perhaps when you wear that favorite sweater for the first time during the season. I am a combination of all, but I certainly know fall is upon us when Festival of the Vine rolls around.
For 35 years, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce has been inviting all who enjoy fantastic food, exquisite wines, energizing entertainment and a great time to this “tasteful” event, Sept. 9 to 11.
Twenty-three Geneva restaurants will be creating a culinary display of specialties from Italian to Mexican, savory appetizers to delectable desserts, at the Flavor Fare. This year brings new menus and new eateries. What a delicious way to sample many of our local restaurants in one convenient location. There will be free entertainment all three days on the main stage as well.
Since Festival of the Vine stemmed – pun intended – from anything grown on a vine, wine of all varieties is a fruitful part of the festival. Twenty-five wines are being offered at the wine tent for purchase by the glass. Read more: Kane County Chronicle

Chamber event: Naperville launches home discount program for 'heroes'

Homes for Heroes involves a local mortgage company and a real estate brokerage partnering to offer discounts on lending fees, title closing fees and commission to police officers, firefighters, military members, reservists or veterans, health care workers, emergency medical professionals and teachers.

The
Naperville location of First Centennial Mortgage and Inspire Realty Partners of Aurora are the leading businesses that recently became affiliates of Homes for Heroes, a Minnesota-based real estate company that formed to give back to first responders after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks nearly 15 years ago.
"What we have here is a big 'thank you' program," said Glen Marino, branch manager of First Centennial in Naperville. "It's not about us, it's about them."
The program thanks those it considers heroes by offering them an average of $3,000 worth of discounts on the various steps of buying, selling or refinancing a home, Marino said.
The mortgage and real estate professionals involved say they want to offer these perks -- even if many "hero" workers already could afford to buy a home without the discounts -- because they've all experienced help from one or more of the heroic workers.
Inspire Realty broker Erik Ramirez has a 7-year-old daughter with special needs who was born prematurely, so he wants to honor the doctors and nurses at Loyola University Medical Center who saved her life, and others like them. Read more: Daily Herald

GSCC news: Springfield Advantage site offers information for businesses considering the area

The Quantum Growth Partnership has launched springfieldadvantage.org to provide data and information about Springfield and Sangamon County to business owners considering the area, according to the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce.

The website includes a link to properties listed in the Location One Information System (LOIS), an online platform for large commercial properties that are linked with economic development partners such as the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity or Ameren. Because LOIS is geared toward industrial and specialty commercial sites, most of the properties listed within it are non-retail buildings larger than 20,000 square feet or land greater than 10 acres.

The Springfield Advantage site also includes a link to the Commercial Real Estate Network's site, seebuildings.com. This site shows comprehensive current listings of properties represented by a licensed Realtor.

Any parties seeking a location for a business can check both springfieldadvantage.org and seebuildings.com. For those who prefer to remain confidential or who are not able to find what they seek online, contact Josh Collins at jcollins@gscc.org. Read more: Illinois Business Daily

#BestChamber practices: Join us at the Members in Motion Multi-Chamber Networking Breakfast brought to you by your local Chambers: Algonqin/Lake in the Hills, Cary Grove, Crystal Lake, Huntley, and Woodstock.

Members in Motion is a progressive networking breakfast that puts you with a table of others who are also looking to grow their businesses through networking. Over the course of a three round scramble, you will meet over twenty individuals who want to hear more about your business, as well as share information about their business. Registration is required and limited to three professionals per industryone per company and fills up quickly.

After a Continental Breakfast, you will be seated with a table (around 8) of individuals with the same goals in mind that you have - networking.  You will not be seated with any of your competition and you will not sit with the same person twice (unless some last minute registrants sneak in at your table).

Each round will begin with everyone having three minutes to talk about who they are, what their business does, and answer a question (you will receive your questions in advance) asked by the table facilitator, such as, "What businesses would best compliment your business?" After everyone has shared information about their business, a bell will ring and they will then move to the next table and repeat the process with new contacts. As an added bonus, open networking will take place before and after the scramble, so be sure to bring plenty of business cards. By the end of the scramble, you should have had quality time with about 23 individuals, and open networking with many more.

Registration is required and limited to 3 professionals per industry. The event will take place on Thursday, September 15 from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Boulder Ridge Country Club, 350 Boulder Dr., Lake in the Hills.
