Good morning Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!

Indiana Chamber concern: Proposed Bill: Hire undocumented immigrants, lose your business license

Employers who repeatedly hire undocumented immigrants could lose their right to do business in Indiana under legislation introduced Thursday in the General Assembly.
The proposal would make Indiana’s penalties among the toughest in the nation.
Senate Bill 285 would allow a judge to strip employers of their business license if they “knowingly” hire undocumented immigrants three times.
State Sen. Mike Delph, R-Carmel, says he introduced the measure to “take away the jobs magnet and remove the financial incentive of unscrupulous business people who profit off of illegal immigration.”
Two other Republican lawmakers have already signed onto the bill, including Senate Pensions and Labor Committee Chairman Phil Boots, R-Crawfordsville. His support is key because the measure must make it through his committee before it can move to the full Senate for a vote.
But the proposal is facing opposition from the business community, including the powerful Indiana Chamber of Commerce, which has helped beat back similar efforts in past years.
“We vehemently oppose it,” said Chamber President Kevin Brinegar. “We think the punishment is too stringent for the crime.”
Indiana is home to about 93,000 undocumented immigrants, according to the Migration Policy Institute. About 53,000 are estimated to be in the state’s workforce. Read more: Indy Star

Dearborn Area Chamber Event: C-Level Executives to Share Personal Business Experiences with Local Young Entrepreneurs

Local young entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to learn from the experiences of distinguished Metro Detroit c-level executives at the Metro Detroit Young Entrepreneurs Academy C-Level Executive Panel Presentation on Thursday, February 11 from 5:30 – 7:00 pm at Henry Ford College in Dearborn. This free event, presented by LaFontaine Automotive Group and hosted by Henry Ford College, is open to the public and is held as a part of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!), hosted by the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce. The Academy is a 30-week curriculum designed to teach students, grades 7-12, to open and fully operate their very own business.

“The Chamber is thrilled to have 16 bright, young minds as a part of our Young Entrepreneurs Academy in 2016,” commented Jackie Lovejoy, President of the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce. “This program provides entrepreneurial minded middle and high school students with the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and to start up a real business!”

The C-Level Executive Panel Presentation will feature panelists: Mr. Andy Chesley, former CEO of world renowned clothing company London Fog; Mr. Renato Jamett, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Raymond James; Mr. Frank Kadaf, president of Active Solutions Group; Ms. Lesli Matukaitis, senior vice president of corporate banking at DFCU Financial; and Mr. Eric Nemeth, founding partner at Varnum Attorneys at Law.

The C-Level Executive Panel Presentation is a unique experience that engages students on an elevated level. Each executive will be providing their own success stories and experiences, allowing students and the general public to hear the inside scoop of what they love about their roles as c-level executives. Additionally, they will share what they were doing when they were in 7-12 grade. Most importantly, the students will have the opportunity to personally network with the executives and to obtain real professional advice to help them succeed in their future business ideas.

“This is a remarkable opportunity for our students to network with and to learn from some of the most successful and respected business executives and leaders in Michigan,” said Ron Hinrichs, Director of Events & Media Relations, and YEA! Program Manager for the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce.

Virginia Chamber event: Economist says Federal Reserve likely to keep rates lower than expected

The market is saying one thing, the Federal Reserve is saying another, said speaker Chris Low, chief economist for FTN Financial, at Friday’s forecast meeting sponsored by the Virginia Bankers Association and the Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

Low spoke about factors most likely to push the Fed off course from raising a key interest rate bThe Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by 0.25 percent from record lows last month, its first rate hike in nine years.

Low said his forecast differs from the Fed in a couple of areas, including spending, and as a result, interest rates will not rise as quickly as projected.y an expected 1 percent this year, by another 1 percent next year and up to 3.5 percent in 2018. Read more: Richmond Times Dispatch

Kentucky Chamber supports felony expungement law

The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce placed its support Wednesday behind legislation in the General Assembly designed to expunge some nonviolent felonies.
If the General Assembly passes the bill, Gov. Matt Bevin said he will sign it.
“Take this up with seriousness,” Bevin said Wednesday during a news conference in the Capitol Rotunda at Frankfort, imploring, in particular, state senators who have yet to embrace the idea.
“For these Class D felonies, of the type of which we are speaking, of a nonviolent nature, they should be able to be expunged,” Bevin said. “I will sign that legislation, I will shepherd this to the degree I must and need to. It is time.”
State Sen. Gerald Neal, D-Louisville, the Senate minority caucus chairman, said Wednesday that he planned to introduce House Bill 40 in the state Senate.
State Sen. Mike Wilson, R-Bowling Green, said he has supported legislation in the past that would restore voting rights to some felons and at his business, felons have been hired.
“If they do good work, I keep a stack of forms to fill out for them to try to get a pardon from the governor,” Wilson said. Wilson spent a majority of his day Wednesday working with education-related legislation as chairman of the Senate Education Committee.
As to the merits of HB 40, which outlines the House approach to felony expungement, Wilson said he was open to looking at the bill.
The felony expungement legislation wasn’t able to get through the state Senate last session after an 84-vote passage in the state House. Chamber officials said felony expungement will help people still looking for work who have that one nonviolent felony on their record and still have to check the employment application box attesting to that fact.
Warren County Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Cohron said the key to the legislation passing is the details in the bill.
“They keep making a bill that is more expansive than they originally state,” said Cohron, legislative director for the Kentucky Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Association. “The devil is in the details. I would hope that they seek input from the prosecutors.”
Cohron said the issue has surfaced in Frankfort for the past decade. Cohron would like to see it packaged with other legislation regarding sentencing requirements.
Dave Adkisson, Kentucky chamber president and chief executive officer, also spoke at the news conference. Joining the chamber at the briefing were representatives from Greater Louisville Inc.-The Metro Chamber of Commerce and Commerce Lexington. Read more: Bowling Green Daily News
