Good morning Chamber world! Today is going to be a GREAT day!

Northern Kentucky Chamber interest: Meet the Guy Who Has the Region's Wealthy Looking at Investing in Start-Ups

He stood in a conference room at the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce offices in Ft. Mitchell, making his pitch to some of the region's wealthiest men. Zach Green was not new to entrepreneurship. His glow in the dark technology has brought in $2 million in sales in the past couple of years. The former Eli Lilly brand manager was motivated to create a silicone band using photo luminescence technology that would be used by his fellow volunteer firefighters. Soon, his idea would be on helmets and equipment at fire departments all over.

And now it's used to highlight exit signs and other parts of buildings and arenas like the Bank of Kentucky Center at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights.

"We need to solve a problem in a unique way, we need to have an unfair business advantage, and we need to be able to succeed with distribution," Green said, having absorbed the key points that have to be made during an investment pitch. The money men that surrounded him in the cramped room came from all corners of the region and all areas of expertise: business, politics, fundraising, finance. Some nodded, some took notes, some asked questions, some left in the middle of the presentation, and some undoubtedly got their checkbooks out. Read more: River City News

Genesee County (Virginia) Chamber honoree: Merrill Lynch team rallied for good cause

(EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the seventh in a series of stories profiling the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 annual award winners. The stories were originally published in the 2015 Business Outlook special section, which was included in the Feb. 7 edition of The Daily News.)

Its endeavors to support the GLOW region YMCAs with a unique fundraiser have earned Merrill Lynch in Batavia recognition as Genesee County Chamber of Commerce’s “Innovative Community Contribution of the Year.”
The company earned this honor primarily for organizing the first GLOW Corporate Cup and AfterGLOW office party at Centennial Park in 2013.
Financial adviser John Riter was the catalyst for this event, said Merrill Lynch’s branch manager Joshua Dent.
“Our purpose was to bring the businesses of the greater Batavia region together for a common cause,” Dent said. “The party after was intended to be a ‘meet and greet,’ and we really nailed it in that sense.”
In its first year, 500 participants took part in the race, raising $12,000. In 2014, it grew to an attendance of more than 700 participants and a profit of $18,000 donated to the Y, Dent said. Read more: The Daily News Online

Oshkosh Chamber co-host: Celebrate Education, an annual event that honors the educators, administrators and volunteers in our schools, is set March 23

Celebrate Education, an annual event that honors the educators, administrators and volunteers in our schools, is just around the corner. Last year, a Celebrate Education grant was awarded by Mid-Morning Kiwanis Club of Oshkosh to the Oshkosh North High School Vocational Skills Class for their program, Little Free Libraries.
"Because of the Little Free Libraries program, the Vocational Skills class has gone above and beyond giving back to their community," says Jill Williams, an adviser at Oshkosh North High School. "They've advanced their communication skills by setting up meetings with the Oshkosh Parks Director and the Oshkosh Parks Advisory Board, as well as improving life skills such as reading a tape measure, completing purchase orders and learning about various building materials – wood, paint, stain, plexi-glass, screws and other tools. Help needed for Virginia Peninsula Chamber Program Mentors needed!

Dear Business Professional,

I am writing to you with an opportunity to make a real and meaningful impact on a budding entrepreneur on the Virginia Peninsula  who is enrolled in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy!

If you are currently unfamiliar, YEA! is a groundbreaking educational program on the Virginia Peninsula that takes students in grades six through twelve through the process of starting and running REAL businesses over the course of a full academic year. Students work closely with local business leaders to cultivate and research business ideas, write a business plan, present their plan to a panel of investors (think Shark Tank meets The Apprentice meets American Idol!), obtain funding, develop their brand and actually launch their real, legally-registered business. Through YEA!, kids 11 to 18 years old learn to make a job, not just take a job.

By approximately the midway point in our YEA! student's experience, they have completed their business plans and are getting ready for their big "Investor" Panel event, and one of the ways we help them get ready is to have their business plan undergo a brief review. Most of the business ideas and plans are super creative, and others might just be the next big thing!

We need folks like you who would be willing to review a few of the business plans. So here's what I am respectfully asking; will you review two business plans each? It should take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes per plan.

As far as the timeline on this goes, we would need to have your commitment by Wednesday, February 18, 2015. We would then send you your two business plans by Friday  February 20, 2015, and YEA! would need the business plans to be returned with comments, suggestions and feedback no later than Friday, February 27, 2015.

Please download this letter that details the specifics of the Business Plan Reviewer volunteer opportunity.

I hope this sounds exciting to you! If you have any worries at all, please know that we will provide all of the tools to enable you to successfully review the plan, and have fun doing so! Additionally, you need not running your own company or have any past experience writing business plans to be an excellent and very helpful reviewer.

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you soon to continue working together to support our next generation of CEOs!

Warm Regards,
Jemal Harris
