COMMERCE: Northwest Indiana catching the eye of national retailers

Business interest in Northwest Indiana is growing, a sign of good things to come, said Rex Richards, executive director of the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce.
"I'm really bullish on Northwest Indiana now, from the standpoint of our total growth and development," he said. "And with the firms we've had locate from Illinois, just across the state line coming over to Northwest Indiana, is a tremendous sign that we are going to have some good days ahead." Richards said he has never been so bullish about the Region as in the last three to four months. Read more: NWI Times

Chamber future: Livable Tulsa: Competition for young professionals is intense


Talk to an out-of-state young professional or recent college graduate about where they want to live and work, and chances are Tulsa, like other Great Plains cities, won’t enter the discussion.
Tulsa, located in a landlocked state, doesn’t boast proximity to an ocean like Portland, Oregon, feature scenic mountain ranges like Denver or use a strong public transportation system like the Northeast corridor. But what young professionals — often defined as 20-to 39-year-olds — say Tulsa does have that sets it apart from more “popular” locales: A strong spirit of entrepreneurship, a high level of community engagement, lower rates of unemployment and, perhaps most importantly, affordability. Fox Cities Chamber debut: Appleton's Octoberfest gets its own beer
One of the main draws for the estimated 100,000 people who pack downtown Appleton every year for Octoberfest is beer.
This year, the thirsty patrons will have the opportunity to get a taste of something extra special.
Organizers of the annual Octoberfest block party have teamed with Wisconsin Distributors and the Wisconsin Brewing Company for a specially brewed beer just for this year's event. The celebration begins Sept. 26 with License to Cruise and continues Sept. 27 with a full-day slate of live music, arts and crafts, food and drinks. Read more: Appleton Post Crescent

Paulson re-elected secretary-treasurer of Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Board

Todd Paulson, vice president of RTP Co. in Winona was re-elected secretary-treasurer of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
New officers and board members will formally begin their terms at the Minnesota Chamber’s Business Conference on Oct. 8 at the Hilton Minneapolis. Read more: Winona Daily News


Chamber education: Leadership Missouri visits Sedalia to learn about agriculture


Home to the Missouri State Fair, Sedalia was the perfect place for the 2014 Leadership Missouri class to learn about agriculture’s place in the state.

The group toured  the Bothwell Lodge State Park before heading to Tyson Foods for a firsthand look at how the industry supports farmers who supply them with livestock and poultry as well as support the local economy by employing more than 1600 people at the Sedalia operation. Chamber engagement: Cy statues celebrate Ames, Iowa

Starting Aug. 31, Ames residents might have been wondering from where the 30 6-foot tall Cy statues all around the city came.
The statues came about through an initiative called CyclONE City. CyClone City was created by Leadership Ames 27 class, which was developed to make informed, involved and concerned community leaders in the Ames area, according to the Ames Chamber of Commerce website. Read more: Iowa State Daily

Chamber news: Niles, IL Village Board gives early OK to Touhy makeover plan

The Niles Board of Trustees got a chance to see — and comment on — the Touhy Corridor plan that was unveiled to the Niles Chamber of Commerce and Industry in mid-August.
During the Aug. 26 meeting, Ross Klicker, the Niles Economic Development and Marketing Coordinator, presented the plan to the board. He asked the board for a vote to approve the general “vision” without necessarily agreeing to specifics. Klicker said he would do a follow-up presentation during the September meeting. South Lyon, Michigan Chamber best practices: Photographer keeps her eye, lens on community


Even if you don’t know Jane Purslow, you’ve probably seen her snapping pictures at a festival, parade, Kensington Metropark or any number of places in western Oakland County.
In all, the Lyon resident said she’s taken more than 1 million photos. At the Lyon Township Kite Festival this summer, she and her husband, Jack, shot more than 10,000 images. Read more: Hometown Life
