Chamber Executive Ongoing Education Weekly New Idea: Aaker on Branding: 20 Principles That Drive Success by David A. Aaker

Aaker on Branding presents in a compact form the twenty essential principles of branding that will lead to the creation of strong brands. Culled from the six David Aaker brand books and related publications, these principles provide the broad understanding of brands, brand strategy, brand portfolios, and brand building that all business, marketing, and brand strategists should know.
Aaker on Branding is a “go-to” source for how you create and maintain strong brands and synergetic brand portfolios. It provides a checklist of strategies, perspectives, tools, and concepts that represents not only what you should know but also what action options should be on the table. When followed, these principles will lead to strong, enduring brands that both support business strategies going forward and create coherent and effective brand families.
Those now interested in and involved with branding are faced with information overload, not only from the Aaker books but from others as well. It is hard to know what to read and which elements to adapt. There are a lot of good ideas out there but also some that are inferior, need updating, or are subject to being misinterpreted and misapplied. And there are some ideas that, while plausible, are simply wrong if not dangerous—especially if taken literally.
Aaker on Branding offers a sense of topic priorities and a roadmap to David Aaker’s books, thinking, and contributions. As it structures the larger literature of the brand field, it also advances the theory of branding and the practice of brand management and, by extension, the practice of business management. State Chamber of Oklahoma: Gross Production Tax Challenge Dismissal Will Keep State Economy Growing

Today’s dismissal of a challenge to the provisions of House Bill 2562 brings certainty to one of the most important industries in the state. The gross production tax rate compromise allows companies to move forward with plans for drilling in the coming year.

“A recent study of Oklahoma’s oil and gas industry by the State Chamber Research Foundation shows how important the energy sector is to the state,” said State Chamber President and CEO Fred Morgan. “Providing assurance for companies that invest billions of dollars and employ tens of thousands of people in Oklahoma will only help the economy.” Read more: State Chamber of Oklahoma

Heart of Wisconsin Chamber introduces manufacturing careers to young audience.

In Wood County, action is being taken to close the skills gap and introduce manufacturing careers to youth. The Heavy Metal Bus Tour, founded by the Heart of Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce, has taken more than 250 area middle and high school students on tours of area manufacturers (including NewPage facilities). Students need to know that there are amazing careers (at some amazing businesses) that are available right in their own backyard. Incourage Community Foundation has brought business and education leaders together to form the Business and Education Committee. The committee (which includes NewPage representatives) has held open discussions on the skills that are needed at local manufacturers. Tours and classes have been held at both manufacturers and schools to get an understanding of the opportunities and challenges each group faces. The committee looks to find ways to energize youth in the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and math. Read more: Stevens Point Journal

New Chamber offices - Deadwood SD eyes $3.5 million gateway visitor/business center

The public is invited to weigh in on a proposed new visitor center to be located in Deadwood’s Lower Main parking lot. With a potential $3.5 million price tag, the centens designed to spruce up Deadwood’s south entrance, calling more attention to neighboring downtown and providing a more customer-friendly informative start to the Deadwood visitor experience.
Request for proposals on the project were solicited late last year with seven responses garnered. Deadwood’s Parking and Transportation Committee then chose four designs, and 30-minute interviews were conducted with those four companies.
The Deadwood City Commission approved entering into a contract with Chamberlin Architects to develop a master plan for the Lower Main parking lot and Visitor Center at a cost not to exceed $39,520 at a Jan. 21 meeting. A copy of the proposal is on file at the Deadwood Police Department for members of the public interested in viewing it.
“This has the potential to be a game changer,” said Deadwood Parking and Transportation Committee Chairman and Police Chief Kelly Fuller. “This is a three-acre blank canvas. We’re looking at building a new visitor center with the potential to house the Chamber of Commerce. Read more: Black Hills Pioneer

Wichita Metro Chamber's Chairman Wayne Chambers: Reauthorize Ex-Im Bank

The Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce’s mission is to drive economic growth and community advancement in the Wichita region. This means helping companies of all sizes around Wichita grow. When they grow, they hire more employees and the entire Kansas economy benefits.
That’s the primary reason the chamber supports Congress’ reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. If Congress doesn’t act and reauthorize the Ex-Im Bank by Sept. 30, the bank will close and put important good-paying jobs in Kansas at risk.
Since 1934, the Ex-Im Bank has played a critical role in assisting our economy. While the bank was created to support exports and imports, its current focus is on supporting exports by providing working-capital guarantees (pre-export financing), export credit insurance, loan guarantees and direct loans (buyer financing). In Kansas, the Ex-Im Bank has helped about 65 businesses – large and small – export products abroad and in turn sustain the Kansas and Wichita economies.
These are companies in our backyard, such as Cargill, CNH Industrial, Learjet, Beechcraft and Cessna (Textron Aviation). The bank also helps other businesses that don’t directly export, such as Spirit AeroSystems, Clearwater Engineering, McGinty Machine and many other suppliers that would be adversely affected if the bank closed. Indiana Chamber Impact: Indiana Among Top Business Climates

Indiana's business climate is best in the Midwest and the seventh best nationwide according to Area Development’s Top States for Doing Business Survey. The state was also among the ranking’s top-five picks in the skilled labor availability (first), water availability and cost (second), distribution and supply chain hubs (third), rail and highway accessibility (fourth) and corporate tax environment (fifth) categories.

"Indiana's low-cost business environment has put the Hoosier State at the top of the list for private-sector job growth over the past year and now is garnering even more national attention," said Governor Mike Pence. "Since day one, our administration has worked hard to continue making Indiana more and more business friendly. Whether improving affordability, training our workforce or making the perfect location easier to find, Indiana is standing out as the best place to brings jobs, paving the way for an exceptional time of Hoosier job creation and opportunity here in Indiana." Chamber Executive Ongoing Education Weekly New Idea: "Worth Every Penny - Build a Business That Thrills Your Customers and Still Charge What You're Worth" by Erin Verbeck and Sarah Petty

A revelation for small business owners: creating a profitable business is possible without getting into a slash-and-burn price war with your competitors. Many small business owners feel pressure to discount their products and services, especially when times are tough. After all, how else will they keep up with the low prices offered by their discounting competitors? What they don't realize is that discounting is the last thing they should be doing if they want to win big. Sarah Petty and Erin Verbeck are here to show you that there's a radically different way to run a small business-- one in which the owners focus on creating specialized offerings and an over-the-top customer experience, not on matching the prices of their competition. Worth Every Penny encourages you to explore and use this model, which is designed to maximize your advantages over the big-box stores and other discounting competitors.

You'll learn how to:
--Build a brand that lays the foundation for you to charge what your offerings are worth.
--Create products, services and high-touch customer experiences to achieve healthy margins and an outspokenly happy and loyal client base.
--Understand how to use a pricing strategy that allows you to create demand and attract the right customers instead of discounting.
--Throw traditional advertising to the wind and implement a boutique way of marketing to excel in this competitive business environment.
--Learn the relationship-based sales skills needed to close every sale and have your clients clamoring for more.
The authors' strategies are enhanced by real-life business experiences and vivid anecdotes from all types of business owners--restaurateurs to contractors to professional service providers and photographers. With the advice in Worth Every Penny, you will be inspired to live your passion and pass your enthusiasm on to your customers. The result: a profitable business that avoids succumbing to the pressure to discount.

Chamber news: New Report Shows MNU Adds Nearly $45 Million Annually To Kansas Economy

According to a new study, MidAmerica Nazarene University generates $44.6 million in new income each year for the Kansas economy. Based on 2012-2013 data, the economic impact of the university’s payroll and operations alone was $28.7 million in added regional income. And MNU generates $9.4 million in social benefits to the state through increased business output and improvements in health and public safety that accrue from the graduates of MNU that stay in Kansas.

Visitors to MNU from outside the MNU Service Area impacted the economy through their off-campus expenditures at hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and other businesses, adding approximately $4.3 million in income to the regional economy. The study did not research the effect on Missouri’s economy meaning that MNU’s impact to the local Metro economy is even greater than shown in this data.

“MidAmerica Nazarene University is an invaluable part of the Olathe community, and the greater Kansas City region as a whole,” said Tim McKee, Olathe Chamber of Commerce CEO. “As an educator, employer and neighbor, MNU’s social and economic impact to the community is huge. From the students they’re attracting to the region, to their employment and capital spending – the contributions MNU makes to the community is part of the reason Olathe is such a great place to live, work and play.” Read more: GardnerEdge.com

Chamber issue: Voters Resoundingly Approve Proposal 1 to Reform Michigan’s Personal Property Tax

This is a big win for Michigan job providers and working families. Michigan Chamber lobbyists played a leadership role in drafting and passing the bills that became Proposal 1. After a statewide voter education campaign, Michigan voters approved Proposal 1 (69% -31%) to phase out personal property taxes paid by small businesses and manufacturers. Passage of Proposal 1 authorizes the distribution of existing use tax revenue to local governments who currently rely on personal property tax collections to provide services, including police and fire. State Chamber of Oklahoma President & CEO Fred Morgan recently released the following statement about the Quality Jobs program:

“Since its creation over 20 years ago, Oklahoma’s Quality Jobs program proved to be an economic development tool envied and copied by other states. It requires jobs to be created before a company can get the taxes it already paid back from the state. These jobs have to pay above the median salary for the area where they were created as well. The success of the Quality Jobs program can be seen in the state’s successful economy including the 4.5% unemployment rate which is 10th best in the country and well below the national average of 6.1%. We are pleased that the Quality Jobs program has broad, bipartisan support among lawmakers who recognize it as a standard by which other economic development tools are measured.”
