Michigan moves to snag 1,100 jobs for Flint, metro Detroit
Michigan has approved incentives to land at least 1,100 new jobs in the state, including hundreds being added by an auto supplier in the embattled city of Flint.
Lear Corp. will receive a state grant worth up to $4.35 million to build a 435-job, $29 million automotive seating assembly plant in Flint, which is recovering from a water crisis. Flint's offering a 50 percent property tax abatement.
The 160,000-square-foot facility will be based on the site of General Motors' former Buick City complex and was chosen over Mexico, according to a state memo.
“We are proud to be growing in our home state and keeping manufacturing jobs in America,” said Ray Scott, Lear executive vice president and president of Seating Operations. “This expansion of capacity reflects the positive outlook we have for our business, and will contribute to the revitalization of Flint.”
Lear aims to begin construction at the site in the fall with operations starting next spring, which will mark the return of auto manufacturing to the iconic location for the first time since 1999.
“We are proud to partner with Lear on this exciting new project,” said Flint Mayor Karen Weaver. “This project will provide hundreds of hard-working Flint residents an opportunity to obtain good paying jobs within the city limits. We are happy to welcome another new company to Flint, and look forward to the boost it will give our local economy. It’s been a long time coming.”
Building on the iconic former Buick City site is a major boost to the city’s economic prospects.
“Lear’s presence in Flint will continue the rich automotive history that’s been a part of our region for decades,” said Tim Herman, CEO of the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber looks forward to working with Lear and providing the support that the company needs to be successful here.” Read more: WNEM

New business brings more southern Indiana jobs

ProMark Building Solutions, a commercial and residential steel roofing manufacturer, celebrated the beginning of operations and the creation of 17 new jobs by 2020 with a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday at its new facilities located at 575 N. 1000 W. in Linton.
The company’s new headquarters in Greene County mark a $1.56 million investment in three new buildings totaling 35,280 square feet situated on 10 acres. ProMark will manufacture steel roofing, which includes the rolling sheet metal for roofing and siding. The business will also serve as a distribution center for Richland Laminated Columns, which will distribute products to southern Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri for the Ohio-based company. The new location also includes a retail center, which will give customers the opportunity to purchase lumber, roofing supplies and pole barn packages.
Greg Elliott of Linton, and Mark Graber of Montgomery partnered with Elmer Sensenig, owner of Richland Laminated Columns in Greenwich, Ohio, to create ProMark Building Solutions.
“Since selecting our site location, we have been warmly welcomed by Linton,” said Elliott. “This was a big undertaking, but with the strong collaboration between the city, county and the state partners, we are ready to start serving our customers. Most importantly, we are excited to be able to do business here and provide new jobs to our community.”
Joining ProMark for the ribbon cutting were Susan Vaughn, Director Southwest Regional Office for the Indiana Economic Development Corporation; Mayor John Wilkes from the City of Linton; Brianne Jerrels, Executive Director of the Greene County Economic Development Corporation (IEDC); Cheryl Hamilton, Executive Director of the Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce; Connie Neininger, Economic Development Director, Indiana State Department of Agriculture; and Jeff Quyle, President and CEO of Radius Indiana.
The IEDC provided $85,000 in conditional Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) tax credits, which incentivize businesses to support job creation, capital investment and to improve the standard of living for Indiana Residents. The state also awarded ProMark a $15,000 grant from the Industrial Development Grant Fund. Greene County supports the project.
“We want to thank the state for providing incentives to help ProMark become a reality in Greene County,” said Jerrels. “This project is a true testament to how the community and state can work together to grow the local economy and support new jobs.” Read more: Washington Times Herald

Whitewater Chamber event City to raise awareness about insurance coverage

The Whitewater Chamber of Commerce will host the “Insurance Made Simple” seminar for all community members to attend. The seminar will feature five local presenters with different jobs in the field spanning healthcare, disability, funeral funds, auto, home, life, recreational and business insurance.
Understanding health insurance is important this time of year as enrollment for federally subsidized health care coverage begins. Medicare pre-enrollment just began on Oct. 1, with regular enrollment ending Dec. 7. Health insurance enrollment runs from Nov. 1 through Dec. 15.
“There’s significant [health insurance] expansion planning in Walworth County for next year, so it’s important making sure people know there’s going to be a lot of options available,” said Jean Linos.
Linos is a Medicare and health coverage expert who works for HealthMarkets, which has a local office in Whitewater.
Roughly 10 percent of people under age 65 in Whitewater do not have coverge, compared to the Wisconsin average of 6.2 percent, according to a 2015 American Community Survey (ACS).
“A lot of people come in here just curious about insurance in general,” Discover Whitewater employee Cierra Dickinson said. “It doesn’t seem like a lot of people know if they’re on the right insurance path.”
The city chamber puts together seminars with local experts based on expressed interest from the community. Last month, the chamber hosted a social media seminar that outlined not only the functions and how-to’s of social media, but also its dangers. Following this event, citizens wanted the same seminar approach to insurances.
“I think there’s a lot of people who don’t realize they have these resources available in the community, and so it’s necessary knowing they have area experts available,” said Linos who will also cover both disability and supplemental insurance, and how they both fit into plans at the seminar.
Peggy Smithson a life agent for Binning & Dickens Insurance, will explain life insurance options, including long term care options and funeral funding plans. Her co-presenter, Mike Dickens, president of Binning & Dickens will cover commercial insurance options.
“Anyone from the individual, single or married, in all phases of life, to the business owner who may need commercial coverage for his or her business or a buy/sell agreement to transfer ownership.” Smithson said. “Things are always changing in the insurance industry, and this is a great way to find out about the most updated products available to protect your family and your assets.” Read more: The Royal Purple

Happy Monday,  #Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT week!

Indy chamber part of group pushing for total overhaul of U.S. immigration system

Groups across the country Wednesday pushed for immigration reform. The movement is called The Right to Reform campaign, organized by the New American Economy.

The group released the findings of a new study Wednesday, which argue immigrants play a huge role in Indiana’s economy.

“Immigrants play a key role in the Indiana economy, contributing to industries such as manufacturing, construction,”said Mark Fisher, Vice President of Policy Development for the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce.

This group, comprised of the Indy Chamber, the Indiana Restaurant and Lodging Association, the Indiana Builders Association, the Indiana Latino Institute, and the Indiana Farm Bureau, argued laws in the U.S. make it hard for people to hire hard-working immigrants.

That’s why they and hundreds of others across the country have joined the Right to Reform campaign, comprised of a collection of groups looking to overhaul the U.S. immigration system.

“Every year, there’s hundreds of millions of dollars of crops that go unharvested and land that simply does not get planted due to the broken immigration system,” said Megan Ritter, the Executive Director of the Indiana Farm Bureau.

“Throughout our nation’s history, the immigrant community has played a vibrant and important role in the industry, often bringing their trade related expertise and skills to enhance the quality of our work,” said Rick Wajda, President of the Indiana Builders Association. Read more: FOX 59

Greater Louisville Inc. interest: Ideas roll in for Gov. Matt Bevin's red tape initiative

Since Gov. Matt Bevin launched his Red Tape Reduction Initiative three weeks ago, people have submitted around 385 suggestions on regulations that could be revised or repealed.

Public engagement is key for this long-term endeavor, said Jessica Ditto, Bevin's communications director. About half of the recommendations the administration has received so far came from businesses while the rest came from residents and state employees.

Ditto said the Bevin administration wants to eliminate bureaucratic rules that burden businesses but is committed to ensuring the state doesn't drop requirements that protect the health and safety of Kentuckians. State cabinets already are analyzing many of the rules that fall under their jurisdiction.

"Our cabinets are very motivated to deal with these outdated regulations," she said.

The Governor's Office is reviewing submissions from the public as they roll in and sending them to the appropriate cabinet for analysis, said Nate Haney, deputy secretary of Bevin's executive cabinet.

Kentucky has more than 4,500 administrative regulations, so it will take a while to review them all, Haney said. Each regulation will be evaluated based on various criteria, including whether it exceeds federal requirements, what financial impact it has on local governments and how it affects businesses and individuals.

Once a cabinet determines that a rule should be repealed or revised, it can send a recommendation to Bevin's office, Haney said. If Bevin's office agrees, it will send that proposal to the legislative branch for further consideration and approval. At that point, there will be an opportunity for public comment on the potential change.

Kenny Colston, spokesman for the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy, stressed the importance of evaluating the regulations in a consistent manner. He emphasized the importance of public input, especially when a rule is eyed for elimination.

Many workers don't know about all the protections they have, Colston said. Unless the government provides opportunities for public comment throughout the review process, they may not realize those regulations are on the chopping block until it's too late.

“When you talk broadly about red tape reduction and getting rid of regulations, every detail is important because a lot of these regulations are in place for a reason," he said. "They protect lives and they protect workers, and every viewpoint needs to be considered … not just, 'Does it make a business owner’s life a tad bit easier?'"

Kentuckians can keep sending in suggestions for this initiative atwww.RedTapeReduction.com.

Sarah Davasher-Wisdom, COO of Greater Louisville Inc., the metro chamber of commerce, said it is excited to spread the word about this project because it gives business owners a chance to speak out about rules that are no longer relevant. She cited a rule requiring the use of cast-iron pipes in buildings over 45 feet tall as one example of an unnecessary regulation still on the books. Read more: Courier Journal
