Hyperion Technology adding 25 engineering and tech jobs in expansion in Tupleo

A decade after its founding, Hyperion Technology Group is expanding its operations for the second time and adding jobs.

The $500,000 investment will create 25 jobs as it moves from its current facility on West Jackson Street to the former Mitchell Distributing warehouse on Commerce Street. The company now employs 40.

“We are excited about Hyperion’s expansion and the continued growth of this local company. These high-paying, high-tech jobs will be a great boost for our local economy,” said Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton.

Hyperion Technology Group provides custom electronic systems, such as embedded systems, signal processing, intelligent power and control systems to government and industry consumers around the world. The company started in 2009 at the Renasant Center for IDEAs business incubator and “graduated” in 2012.

“It’s what we envisioned with the incubator process back in 2002,” said Community Development Foundation President and CEO David Rumbarger. “We put some flesh on it with a building in 2006, and now a graduate is now employing another 25 high-tech, high-paying careers. We’ve had other graduates, like HomeStretch (furniture), which employs 400. To say they’re a success is almost an understatement.”

Hyperion’s move to Commerce Street will be into a 48,000-square-foot building, quadrupling its current space.

Company president and CEO Geoffrey Carter said hiring of the 25 employees – all engineering and technology jobs – has begun, and he hopes to have them on staff within 18-24 months.

“Over the past year, we’ve had tremendous growth, not only with our military sales but our industrial and commercial sales,” he said. “We’ve simply outgrown our facility and had to find a bigger facility.”

The Mississippi Development Authority is providing assistance for building renovations, as well as a loan to the city of Tupelo for the purchase of the building. Hyperion will lease the facility on a long-term basis from the city.

Carter said Hyperion will be moving some staff into its new location in the next few weeks, with some equipment now in storage to be shifted over almost immediately. Additionally, as part of the renovation of the building, some 30 offices will be added. That work is expected to be finished by the fall to allow a complete move-in of the company’s operations.

Shelton said the deal will not cost city taxpayers any money. Read more: Daily Journal

Mahindra eyes 2nd plant in Michigan as it bids for Postal Service contract

  • Mahindra Automotive considering sites in Detroit and Oakland and Genesee counties for second plant
  • India-based automaker is a finalist for U.S. Postal Service delivery vehicles contract
  • Company has other products that could be paired with new plant

Mahindra Automotive North America is considering sites in Detroit, Oakland County and Genesee County to build a new assembly plant should the Indian automaker land a $6 billion contract to build next-generation delivery vehicles for the U.S. Postal Service, the company's CEO said.

USPS has indicated it will decide this summer which company to award a contract to build 180,000 delivery vehicles over six years to replace its aging fleet of the Grumman LLV (Long Life Vehicle) that have been synonymous with mail delivery since the 1980s.

Rick Haas, president and CEO of Mahindra Automotive North America, said the Postal Service contract could dictate the direction the company takes after just over a year after Mahindra began assembly of its first U.S.-built Roxor off-road vehicle at its new manufacturing plant in Auburn Hills.

"If we get a piece of that or all of that contract, that opens a bunch of doors, shuts a few other ones," Haas said May 1 at a Troy Chamber of Commerce event. "If we don't get it, it shuts some doors, opens some other ones. So we're going to evaluate it all."

Mahindra is one of six finalists for the contract, which includes a 20-year parts supply deal. The U.S. Postal Service began the request for proposals process to replace its LLV's in 2015.

Haas told an audience of business executives and professionals that the automaker has six different products in development at the Mahindra North American Technical Center in Troy that could be paired with production of a postal service vehicle at a second manufacturing facility.

"The question is which ones do you start to push," Haas said. "It's going to depend on what happens."

Haas declined to say which sites within Michigan the company is leaning toward. But he indicated they were all brownfield sites that need redevelopment.

Economic development officials from North Carolina, South Carolina, Arizona and Wisconsin have all approached Mahindra about building a plant in their states, Haas said.

"We'll probably have to announce a site this year," he said.

Mahindra's 150,000-square-foot factory in Auburn Hills is pumping out more than 30 Roxor off-road vehicles a day and the company plans to start assembling a Roxor with an automatic transmission in the coming weeks, Haas said. Read more: Crains Detroit Business

Chamber irreplacable: Fire destroys original Famous Dave's restaurant in Hayward, Wis.

The first Famous Dave's restaurant, built in northwestern Wisconsin in 1994 and the launching point for an international chain of barbecue restaurants, was destroyed by fire early Monday.

As fans of the restaurant mourned the loss of the landmark, its owners pledged to rebuild.
"This wasn't just a restaurant; it was my dream for 25 years before it even opened. Through many tough times in my younger days, it was this dream that kept me going through thick or thin," said owner Dave Anderson in a Facebook post Monday. "This restaurant was my dream for almost my whole life. ... (It) gave many young people their first job and helped many summer workers pay their way through school. But I believe that the Good Lord has always had a plan for our lives and we are going to reopen better than ever."
A resident from the town of Hayward called in the fire just before 4:30 a.m., the Sawyer County sheriff's office reported, and flames had engulfed the restaurant -- on the shore of Round Lake about 10 miles east of Hayward -- by the time firefighters arrived. No one was in the building at the time of the fire.
The state fire marshal was investigating the cause.
"It's going to be missed greatly," said Doug Smith, executive director of the Hayward Chamber of Commerce. "I don't know how you replace something like that." Read more: Twin Cities.com
