Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a great week!
On Thursday, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives (KCCE) announced the 2020 KCCE Annual Excellence Awards. These awards pay tribute to local chambers of commerce in areas of operational excellence that include membership growth and retention, website, social media, special publication and newsletter communications, and special events. This year two additional awards were added: excellence in innovation and excellence in advocacy.
The awards event culminates with the presentation of the KCCE Chamber Professional of the Year, which is awarded to an individual that shows outstanding dedication and achievement in chamber leadership and service to the community. The 2020 Chamber Executive of the Year is Deanna Herrmann, executive director of the London - Laurel County Chamber of Commerce.
Herrmann has served the London-Laurel County Chamber of Commerce for ten years. Her accomplishments include graduating from the Institute for Organization Management (IOM) Program offered through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Leadership Kentucky in 2019. Herrmann served as chair of the KCCE board between 2018 and 2019 and continues to serve the organization as a board member.
“Thank you so much to KCCE and the Kentucky Chamber for mentoring me for the past 10 years, and many thanks to the London-Laurel County Chamber Board for believing in our shared vision,” Herrmann said. “I am overwhelmed with this award. I am beyond words to know I was selected from several wonderful deserving candidates.”
Another individual award, Volunteer of the Year, was presented to John Rennels of the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce.
“I was totally caught off guard and humbled by our Chamber staff and by longtime board member Gabe Uebel and current board chairman Mackenzie Morris taking the time to write in support,” said Rennels. “It is easy to serve when we are able to follow the lead of our exemplary staff and board.”
Awards were given in five categories: annual dues income less than $75,000 (Group I); annual dues between $75,001 and $150,000 (Group II); annual dues income between $150,001 and $250,000 (Group III); annual dues between $250,001 and $650,000 (Group IV); and annual dues income more than $650,001 (Group V). Lakeshore Chamber, Crossroads Regional Chamber, and Sienna College Poll of Chamber From Across The U.S.
SURVEY RESULTS -2020
The enclosed surveys were conducted during the 3rd quarter of 2020 to help us gauge the impact of COVID 19 on our two local chambers, and to gain insight as to the effects of the pandemic on our regional economy going into 2021. In addition to a regional snapshot, we were part of a national chamber poll that gives insight as to the impact of COVID-19 on the U.S. Economy from coast to coast, and that survey is also included.
We want to thank the Crossroads Regional Chamber for collaborating with the Lakeshore Chamber on our member surveys, as well as the Indiana Chamber Executives Association for their guidance on the national chamber survey.
Your comments are invaluable as we begin our budgets for 2021, so please take a few moments to review the surveys, and as always, send any additional comments to the survey link below.
Sincerely, |

The Shiawassee region is losing a great leader. Jeff’s are big shoes to fill. He’s the face of the chamber, leading our small business community as a convener of diverse organizations and people, and being a behind-the-scenes but effective catalyst for much-needed change,” says Heidi O’Dea, SRCC board chair. “We are all grateful for his leadership on large projects such as the Armory and community events such as Oktoberfest. He is known as a leader among his Michigan chamber colleagues and will be missed in every one of the many networks in which he’s connected. We wish Jeff well as he moves on to the exciting next phase of his life.”
Deason has been with the SRCC for seven years, coming from Indian Trails where he was national sales director. During his tenure, Deason was awarded the Michigan Association of Chamber Professionals’ 2018 Michigan Chamber Professional Award for his role as a chamber industry frontrunner in Michigan. He also conceived the idea for – and worked collaboratively to earn – a $150,000 Prosperity Award from Consumers Energy Foundation in late 2019 to transform part of the now-closed Owosso Middle School into an artists’ community when it is redeveloped.
His biggest accomplishment was overseeing the $5.5 million renovation of the Owosso Armory into modern, high-quality, class-A office space. Since its opening in June 2018, it has been at nearly full capacity, hosted multiple Armory Market and other community events and fulfilled its mission of being the hub of community and business partnerships in the region. Deason and his team worked for five years, navigating miles of complicated funding programs to make downtown’s newest gem a reality, according to O’Dea. His innovative fortitude resulted in a $1.47 million grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund, a division of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, as well as $1.24 million Small Deal Fund that combined funds from federal Historic Tax Credits and New Market Tax Credits through the National Trust Community Investment Corporation – the first such pairing in the nation as part of an NTCIC national main street initiative. Deason worked closely with Owosso Main Street and other key stakeholders to make this happen.
But it’s not just a beautiful building along the river Deason is largely credited for, says O’Dea. He leaves behind a legacy of collaboration, respect, excellence and good humor.
“Through it all, my goal was to remain a positive influence among my peers, in the community and through every interaction I have had as I represented this organization,” Deason shared.
“Together, we have fulfilled many stretch goals as a board and staff,” continued Deason. “I could not be prouder of my team. They are not just coworkers, but friends and family I now leave behind to accomplish vital work. I will miss them greatly, but I know they are prepared and fully capable leaders who have only the best interest of the SRCC at heart.”
The board’s executive committee has appointed Sue Kadlek, SRCC vice president, as interim CEO while a search is conducted for a new leader. Kadlek has been at the chamber for 22 years.
During these unprecedented times, a strong Chamber of Commerce's relevance has become very clear. We are grateful for the new members who have joined during this pandemic, and especially grateful for our renewing members who may be struggling at this time, but understand the importance of being a part of their local Chamber of Commerce. Membership not only supports your business but it also supports the communities you serve. Thank You!
