Midland Business Alliance: Resilience Reset: It's Your Turn to Thrive (and watch this video!)

Be inspired to be an agent of change, conquer fear and self-doubt, and develop resilience strategies that can be applied immediately in all aspects of your life to become bolder, stronger, and better able to handle anything thrown your way.

We have seen our community pull together mightily to get us through both the COVID-19 crisis, and the dam failure flood disaster. But our recovery will require time, patience, sustained efforts, and resiliency so that we can fully bounce back to our pre-crisis state.

In November 2019, the Midland Business Alliance contracted with nationally known speaker and author Anne Grady to bring her message of resiliency to Midland. Now more than ever, we need her message, and tools in our toolbox to build our resiliency.

On June 11th, Anne delivered a short, virtual event, which was open to our members at no charge, and provided essential, immediate tools for resiliency. This October 8th event is a full-length follow-up to that event! Click here to check out a recording of that event.

Resilience Reset:

It’s Your Turn to Thrive!

The ability to successfully navigate change, rise above adversity, and triumph in our lives boils down to one word: RESILIENCE. When faced with challenge, ambiguity, and adversity, those who practice resilience refuse to let fear hold them back, and they break through the barriers keeping them stuck to not only survive difficult times, but thrive as a result. Learn how to cultivate courage, improve resilience, and triumph over adversity, obstacles, and setbacks.

Be inspired to be an agent of change, conquer fear and self-doubt, and develop resilience strategies that can be applied immediately in all aspects of your life to become bolder, stronger, and better able to handle anything thrown your way.

Natchez-Adams County YP: Bike classic to pedal tourism dollars to area next weekend

Next weekend, local tourism dollars will be generated with pedal power.

More than 100 cyclists are expected to gather in Natchez for the inaugural Young Professionals Natchez Bicycle Classic on Sept. 19.

“It has been almost 20 years since we had a race,” organizer Matthew Hall said. “I remember going to it when I was a young kid. It was a race back then.”

Hall is a member of the Young Professionals of the Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce, the group that is bringing the popular event back to Natchez — with a twist.

Instead of a series of competitive races, this year’s event is more about the rides than the races.

“People will be able to go at their own pace,” Marketing and Advertising Chair Sarah Lindsey Laukhuff said about this year’s event.

Laukhuff and Hall both said that event was created to bring tourism dollars to the community. The hope is that riders from out of town will stay, eat and shop in the area.

“We wanted to bring people and let them spend money in Natchez,” Hall said. “It is good exposure for the Chamber, a good promotion for Natchez and a great opportunity to bring back a really cool event.”

Laukhuff said organizers are already excited about the number of cyclists that have already signed up for this year’s event.

“As of Friday morning, we have had 89 riders sign up,” Laukhuff said. “Considering we are a week away from the event, that is a very good sign. From then on, we are anticipating about 10 people sign up a day.”

Laukhuff said that others who have experience with similar events said the number of people who have already signed up for the event points to a good weekend.

Earlier this year, Greenwood hosted 500 bicyclists for a similar ride, Laukhuff said. In the past, more than 1,000 cyclists attended the annual event in Greenwood, but because of COVID-19 the organizers of the event had to place a cap on the number of riders that could attend, Laukhuff said.

Laukhuff said this year’s race has the potential to attract many bikers because it includes the Natchez Trace.

“The Natchez Trace is considered a mecca for bicyclists, and we get to have an event that celebrates that, since we are the beginning of the Trace,” Laukhuff said.

With four rides a varying length, cyclists will start on Broadway Street in front of the Natchez Grand Hotel and be escorted to the Natchez Trace or Cemetery Road depending on which ride they choose. The distance of the rides ranges from a few miles to 56 miles on paved or gravel surfaces.

All events will start at 7 a.m. and will be complete by 2 p.m.

Organizers hope participants will come to Natchez on Friday and spend the weekend to eat, stay and have a good time in the city in addition to the Saturday bike ride.

Using the guidelines issued by Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves and local officials, organizers of the event said they are taking all of the necessary steps to ensure participants, volunteers, and residents’ safety and well-being.

All events will take place outdoors.

All Chamber employees and Chamber-authorized volunteers will be provided and required to wear appropriate masks and other protective equipment. The state’s 6-foot minimum social distance guideline will be observed throughout the race. Participants and volunteers will be required to sign a COVID-19 waiver. Read more: Natchez Democrat

Lansing Regional Chamber and Greater Lansing Hispanic Chamber Join in Salute to National Hispanic Heritage Month

The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) is joining with the Greater

Lansing Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GLHCC) in recognition and celebration of

National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 through October 15.

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American

citizens of Hispanic or Latino origins.

“It is fitting that we recognize the enormous contributions the Hispanic population has

made in our region,” said Tim Daman, LRCC president and CEO. “It is particularly

noteworthy to see the increasing number of Hispanic owned businesses that are

creating jobs and providing opportunities in the Greater Lansing region.”

Hispanic entrepreneurs are the fastest growing segment of business owners in the U.S.

as they have ownership of one out of every seven small businesses in the country.

“We want to honor our rich history of Hispanic leadership that built a great foundation in

the Lansing area. Our growing Hispanic business community has unique needs that are

rapidly evolving. As we relaunch the Hispanic Chamber in 2021, our focus is to provide

support through Business Education and Workforce Development,” In a joint statement

by GLHC Co-Chairs, Elizabeth Hernandez & Chaz Carrillo.

“We are seeing more and more cases of hard-working men and women who are

realizing their dream of operating a successful business.” said Sein Paul Benavides,

Hispanic community leader.

Virginia Peninsula Chamber: September is National Preparedness Month

Natural disasters and emergencies can occur at any time, so it’s important to be prepared. Every September, we recognize National Preparedness Month (NPM) to promote family and community disaster planning now and throughout the year.

The 2020 NPM theme is "Disasters Don’t Wait. Make Your Plan Today.” Below are ways you can begin planning to protect yourself, your family and your home.

Make A Plan: Talk to your friends and family about how you will communicate before, during, and after a disaster. Make sure to update your plan based on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations due to the coronavirus.·

Build A Kit: Gather supplies that will last for several days after a disaster for everyone living in your home. Don’t forget to consider the unique needs each person or pet may have in case you have to evacuate quickly. Update your kits and supplies based on recommendations by the CDC.·

Prepare for Disasters: Limit the impacts that disasters have on you and your family. Know the risk of disasters in your area and check your insurance coverage. Learn how to make your home stronger in the face of storms and other common hazards and act fast if you receive a local warning or alert.·

Become Flood Fluent: Disasters don’t wait and having flood insurance may be one of the most important parts of your emergency plan. Is your property protected? Fill up on flood facts at GetFloodFluent.org

Teach Youth About Preparedness: It’s important to talk to your children about preparing for emergencies and what to do in case you are separated. Reassure them by providing information about how they can get involved.

Preparedness is even more critical this year, as our city and world continue to struggle with the coronavirus pandemic. Learn more about how to prepare, including COVID-19 tips, at Ready.gov. You can also view a Ready.gov PSA about how to plan ahead for disasters during the coronavirus pandemic.
