5 Star Naperville Area Chamber Of Commerce CEO Announces Fall Departure

The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce (NACC) today announced that President and Chief Executive Officer Nicki Anderson will be leaving the organization. Having led a successful operational and financial transformation, the NACC is well positioned for growth. To support a seamless transition, Anderson will remain in her current role until fall 2019.

A Search Committee comprised of NACC Board Members as well as chamber members will work to identify Anderson's successor.

"I speak on behalf of the entire board of directors when I say thank you to Nicki for all that she has done for the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce over the last 5 years," said Emily Ory, Chairman of the Board of Directors. "During Nicki’s tenure she has streamlined programing to bring more value to our members, explored additional revenue sources, improved efficiencies with staff, strengthened partnerships with strategic alliances and become a personal friend. I admire the ownership and passion Nicki has for the community and it’s been an honor to be a part of the legacy she’ll leave on this organization."

Anderson said, "It has been nothing short of a privilege to serve as the NACC’s CEO for the past five years. I came into this organization with some challenges but knew what needed to be done. With a great team and a solid Board of Directors, we have secured a strong future for this chamber. As I look to complete my service later this year, I will greatly miss my team, Board Members and members for their support and inspiration. The time is right to hand the baton off to the next CEO whose vision and leadership can guide this organization into a bright and exciting future.”

Under Anderson’s leadership, the organization has enhanced engagement and grown the Young Professionals Network. The NACC also went through a complete rebranding to increase its relevancy in the community. Additionally, she led the organization through a capital campaign to raise $250,000 to fund technological advancements including a new website.

“Nicki has served as a transformational leader for the Chamber. Throughout her tenure, she has listened to our members, modernized our organization, and made us more agile,” said Ian Holzhauer, Chair-elect of the Board of Directors. “I’m especially thankful for the way she has engaged young professionals, igniting them to take leadership positions within our business and broader community.”

“I’m very proud of the vision and relevance brought back to this organization. Therefore, with my “mission accomplished” it is time to hand it off to a CEO that can bring the organization to a new generation of business owners and leaders. There is plenty of work to be done moving forward, the opportunities are endless,” said Anderson.

The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce is the largest suburban Chamber in Illinois with an active membership of 1,200 organizations of every size and from every sector. The NACC promotes economic growth and advocacy in and around the Naperville area. For its efforts in promoting free enterprise and the business community, the Chamber has been recognized with 5-Star Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, an honor bestowed on only 1 percent of Chambers, out of the nearly 7,000 in the nation. A Valpo Life in the Spotlight: Kurt Gillins

“I enjoy entertaining people,” said Kurt Gillins, Vice President of Programs & Communications at Valpo Chamber. “I enjoy seeing people have fun and succeed through connections. It’s amazing to see people really bond.”

Gillins’ pursuit of watching other people enjoy themselves helps weave his own life experiences.

For the Chamber, Gillins hosts networking events and workshops that help build new skills. He also enjoys connecting young professionals with mentors and offering new businesses advertising opportunities.

“I love being able to meet all the people,” Gillins said. “I get to help them grow professionally as well as help them grow their businesses and experience success.”

For the past three years, Gillins has worked with We Create Media to produce monthly videos that feature his humorous take on what’s happening each month. The videos garnered a national award.

“It’s a really big deal for us,” he said.

A couple months ago, when it was only 13 degrees, Gillins filmed a video in swim trunks and a tank top in downtown Valpo.

“It was really a lot of fun, but it wasn’t easy to pretend it was summer in Central Park that day.”

Before taking on full-time fun at the Chamber, Gillins worked at Memorial Opera House, a natural extension of his education and background. Gillins discovered his love of acting in high school, and by chance decided to audition for the show choir at Wheeler High School.
“I discovered performing at that point and then started taking voice lessons and ended up majoring in theater at Valparaiso University,” Gillins said. “I’ve even done some commercials and extra work in Chicago.”

Valpo residents likely recognize Gillins from his yearly performance at the Valpo Parks tree lighting. He is a founding member of JingleTones, which started not as a Christmastime choral ensemble, but as something quintessentially American: baseball entertainment.

“A friend of mine had a request to sing Christmas carols at a White Sox game for their Christmas in July event,” Gillins said. “We did that for five seasons, and as more people heard about us, they wanted us to perform at their events, too. Every Christmas now, we do several local performances.”

“When we first started doing the gig at Sox park, it was incredible to be behind the scenes and out on the field. It was so cool – one of my favorite performances ever.”

Harkening back to his high school days, Gillins always preferred performing, but over the years he’s done more directing.

“It’s just one of those things. I always end up the director,” Gillins said. “I volunteered the first time and it stuck. Then I found other shows that I wanted to do.”

When his daughter Lilly was 5, Gillins directed Beauty and the Beast, and Lilly fell in love with theater – and Disney, too.

Lilly’s affinity for her father’s production of the Disney classic created a full-family enthusiasm for Disney World. Kurt, his wife Patty and Lilly are always looking forward to their next trip.

“It’s kind of our place to go and relax and enjoy being together,” Gillins said. “Lilly has always loved going, and we grew into it because of her. It’s great that we have a 17-year-old who still enjoys being around her parents. We’ll do this as many times as we can.”

Gillins has always cherished watching people enjoy themselves, and none more so than his daughter.

“She’s a good kid, and I credit her incredible mother for that,” Gillins said. “She always loved dressing up as Alice in Wonderland or Wendy from Peter Pan. I’m always going to nurture that bond that we’ve built.” Read more: Valpo Life

Christian County Chamber collaboration: Community Vision Plan 2030 Planning Begins

Chamber asking for community input

The Greater Hopkinsville Chamber Foundation in coordination with the Christian County Chamber of Commerce is organizing the next strategic vision plan for Christian County. A selection team with the Foundation has selected consultant JRO+Co. out of Washington to help develop the plan. A 20 person task force of community members has also been formed to help guide the process and Taylor Hayes will serve as the liaison for the project.

The team will spend the next year collecting data and surveys but also seeking ideas and input from members of the community. “We will conduct group meetings, place idea boxes around the community and attend events that draw a big crowd in order to capture what our community wants for the future of Hopkinsville” said Taylor. “We are also driving folks to an online survey to answer two simple questions.” Those who submit ideas will be entered into a drawing for two $250 gift cards. The website to submit ideas is www.christiancountyvision.org.

Jason Robertson, President/CEO of JRO+Co. recently made his first visit to Christian County to meet the task force and meet with various stakeholders in the community. “There’s a passion for community-building here that you don’t find in too many places”, said Robertson, “You hear it in the way people talk about the history of their hometown and you feel it when people talk about what’s possible in the future. I’m looking forward to connecting with as many people as possible in the months ahead, and together, figuring out “what’s next” for Christian County.

The Vision Plan was first created in 2005 by a community stakeholders who saw a need for a strategic plan to ensure progress for Christian County. Since its implementation, Christian County has experienced substantial progress and improvement in education, investments in infrastructure and a better relationship between law enforcement agencies and local neighborhoods. It serves as a guide for the many sectors of Christian County to ensure stakeholders are working together as a team to reach a common goal for our community.

The proactive engagement phase of the project runs through September 2019. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Taylor Hayes at visionplan@christiancountychamber.com and to submit ideas for the community, go to www.christiancountyvision.org

Additional information about the 2030 Vision Plan can be found at www.christiancountyvision.org

Batavia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Selects Margaret Perreault as New Leader

Margaret Perreault, currently the Membership Development Specialist with the Chamber takes over as the organization’s head on June 25

Batavia, Ill. – June 17, 2019 – Today, Margaret Perreault of Batavia was named the new president and chief executive officer of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce by its board of directors. However, Perreault won’t be changing her business address as she is currently the membership development specialist with the Chamber.

Jessica McGrail, chairperson of the board, spoke on behalf of the entire board of directors. According to McGrail, the search committee was impressed with Perreault’s past work with the Chamber and confident that going forward, she will continue the organization’s momentum.

“We are fortunate to have Margaret as our next president and CEO of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce,” said McGrail, owner of Dollar & Sense Bookkeeping. “She is member- and community-focused, which we know will be key in the continued success of our Chamber.

“Furthermore, in her role as the member development specialist for over four years, Margaret built a solid understanding of the Chamber’s operations and is well-regarded among our members,” continued McGrail. “We believe this will be an easy transition and are excited to be a part of the ideas and creativity Margaret will bring to this position.”

As for Perreault, she hopes to energize the business community, highlighting the value they bring to the greater community.

I am extremely honored to have been selected to serve my community as the next President and CEO of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce,” Perreault commented. “I am confident in my ability to continue the progress and prosperity of our Chamber.

“The Chamber’s work is vital to the local business community and I look forward to working with the Chamber’s board, ambassadors and staff to continue to grow the organization and to promote the interests of local businesses to ensure their livelihood,” she continued. “I believe in the Chamber’s capacity to enhance the economic and business climate of our area.

“I am excited to work with our members to provide the programs and benefits that they need to prosper,” Perreault said.

McGrail and Perreault added that the work accomplished over the past five years by departing Holly Deitchman created a strong foundation for future growth of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce.

“Holly has prepared me in so many ways to take the helm of the Chamber and continue its success,” stated Perreault. “I sincerely thank her, and I know the board of directors join me in wishing her all the best in her new position with the Batavia School District.”

McGrail summed up the feelings of many Chamber members.

“Holly will be sorely missed; she has brought this organization to a level it has never seen before,” McGrail concluded. “We are thankful for all she has done for this Chamber, our members and the Batavia community. We are fortunate that in her new position she will be a community partner of the Chamber.”

Leadership Lafayette Partners with MSD to Bring Accessible Playground to Oxford

Leadership Lafayette has partnered with the Mississippi Society for Disabilities (MSD) to create a fundraiser named “Play Without Barriers” that will bring accessible playground equipment to Bailey Branch Park for children of all ability levels and their families.

Leadership Lafayette’s fundraising goal is set at $20,000. An arm of the Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Lafayette consists of community leaders divided into groups, each focused on a different community improvement project.

“Playgrounds can create a barrier to play, and people usually don’t think about that,” said Tanya Nichols, Leadership Lafayette 2019 participant and project manager for the University of Mississippi’s Division of Diversity and Community Engagement. “An open park seems like it has no limitations. But if a play structure is not accessible, it is not inclusive. In being a diverse community, we have to think about access, inclusion and equity even when it comes to children playing. It’s important to create a space where kids have that opportunity.”

The playground, located on the corner of Highway 7 South and Office Park Drive, will see three phases of equipment installation, each priced at $85,000: equipment suitable for ages five to 12, independent play structures located in shade and a playground suitable for children ages two to five. All phases should be complete by 2022 with the first stage to be finished by spring 2020.

“This project will enrich our community in a number of ways,” Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President Pam Swain said. “We are such a young family-focused community, and our quality of life is our major asset. Having an accessible playground in this community will allow all children to thrive and play. We are beyond excited about MSD’s plans.”

To fundraise for this project, Leadership Lafayette is helping MSD organize a family-friendly, community event titled “Jazz Under the Stars” with the North Mississippi Symphony Orchestra on June 27 at the Old Armory Pavilion. In-kind donations such as beverages, items for door prizes, and volunteers are welcome. To be an event sponsor, “Play Without Barriers” offers a personalized brick to be placed at Bailey Branch for a $50 or more donation and tickets to “Jazz Under the Stars” for a $100 or more donation. Northern Kentucky Chamber and Catalytic Fund announce new public art and wayfinding project

The Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce (NKY Chamber) and the Catalytic Fund have partnered for the NKY Bourbon Barrel Project to combine public art and wayfinding and celebrate Kentucky’s Edge Bourbon Festival and BLINK.

This effort will match the business community with local artists to create custom painted bourbon barrels, each with a solar lighting feature.

When complete, the barrels will be lined up along the streets of Northern Kentucky’s entertainment districts, serving as both wayfinding and public art.

The Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce is the leading business organization in Northern Kentucky.

NKY Chamber President Brent Cooper is excited to spearhead the Bourbon Barrel Project.

“Bourbon is part of Kentucky’s culture and this is a fun way of telling our story while highlighting all the cool businesses and community venues we have,” Cooper said. “The barrels will also provide wayfinding for visitors and will be another exciting art attraction in our region. The barrels will be prominently featured during Kentucky’s Edge Bourbon Conference and Festival October 4-5, as well as during BLINK the very next weekend.”

Cooper also believes that the barrel project will help emphasize the connection between our cities and counties and better positioning ourselves in Frankfort, and beyond, as a connected region.

“NKY is stronger when we work together,” said Cooper. “I predict the NKY Bourbon Barrel Project will not only be embraced by businesses and organizations in our river cities but by everyone throughout the entire Northern Kentucky region. Everyone is going to want one.”

The Catalytic Development Funding Corp. of Northern Kentucky (the Catalytic Fund) is a private sector, not-for-profit organization. It provides financing assistance and related services for developers of quality residential and commercial real estate projects in Northern Kentucky’s urban cities of Ludlow, Covington, Newport, Bellevue, and Dayton.

Its mission is to accelerate Northern Kentucky’s urban renaissance through with a three-pronged strategy: financial investment, development services and vibrancy initiatives.

Jill Morenz, the Catalytic Fund’s Director of Community Initiatives and Communications, is managing the project.

“I’m looking forward to working directly with the businesses and the artists to facilitate these amazing public art pieces tied to our region’s bourbon heritage,” Morenz said.

Morenz also leads the Public Arts Network of Northern Kentucky, which provides connections and resources for artists, art organizations and economic development professionals who see the strong link between the arts and vibrant communities.

“Everyone in the Network is eager to help make this project a huge success,” she said.

The project will work like this:

* A business or organization will sponsor a barrel for $1,200; NKY Chamber members will receive a $200 discount off the price.

* The sponsorship will include a barrel, along with fees and materials for an artist to paint it.

* The project will end with the completed barrels being debuted at an Unveiling Party and Bourbon Toast.

* After the party, barrels will be placed in key areas in northern Kentucky, such as MainStrasse Village and Madison Ave. in Covington and Monmouth St. and Newport on the Levee in Newport.

The barrels will remain in place for at least one year, literally lighting up the streets with artistic wayfinding, while connecting the region in a unique way.

“At the end of the day, visitors will be able to see the connections we have through these pieces of art,” said Cooper.

Indiana Chamber visits South Bend

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce was in South Bend Thursday morning on the first stop of its statewide tour, releasing the results of an annual report card.

The Indiana Vision 2025 Report Card ranks Indiana nationally in 65 key economic measurements. This year, Indiana ranked among the Top 15 states for the national assessment of educational progress, which tests fourth- and fifth-graders in reading, math and science.

The postsecondary completion rates are improving but are still low compared to other states, with 43 percent of Hoosiers completing a postsecondary degree.

The report also showed health is a main concern statewide. The rate of smoking in Indiana is 50 percent higher than the national average.

"We use these scores, the raw scores and the rankings, to generate public policy initiatives, to shore up the areas where we're not doing as well, as well as try to enhance the areas where we're doing comparatively very well," Indiana Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kevin Brinegar said. "So, it helps drive our public policy advocacy."

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce will visit about 10 Hoosier cities throughout the months of June and July. Read more: WNDU

Chamber Executive Illinois Digest
June, 2019

An Illinois Chamber Executive Legend is on the Move...

Joseph Henning named new president, CEO of Henry Chamber of Commerce

Joseph Henning has been named the new president and chief executive officer of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce.
Henning is currently the president and chief executive officer of the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce in Aurora, Ill., in suburban Chicago. He has held that position since 2005.
Henning will replace David Gill, who has led the Henry County Chamber of Commerce since 2012. He announced his retirement several months ago and will work with Henning through the transition process.
“The Henry County Chamber position is a great opportunity for me to put my skill sets to work in a very fast-paced, growing area,” Henning said in a press release. “Georgia is known for its progressive business climate, and I look forward to working with the leaders in Henry County, the region and state to build an even stronger chamber.”
Henning said he feels his experiences in Aurora will match the needs of Henry County.
“I look forward to becoming a part of the leadership team in the community,” Henning said.
Sharon Ponder, the 2019 chair of the Chamber and the vice president of finance for Bennett International Group, said Henning is the right person for the job.
“Joe’s expertise and understanding of the important role a Chamber plays in the growth and development of a community in terms of leadership, infrastructure and creating an inclusive, pro-business environment are the key reasons the search committee identified him as the right leader for Henry County,” Ponder said in a press release. “The Chamber has a solid foundation that Davis, the internal team and our membership have established over the years.”
Henning also served as the chair of the National Board of Trustees for the U.S. Chamber Institute for Organization Management in 2016-17 and continues as an instructor for classes throughout the country.

Effingham County Chamber named finalist for industry award

The Effingham County Chamber of Commerce has been named a finalist for the 2019 Chamber of the Year award, presented by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. The award is the most prestigious and competitive recognition presented annually by ACCE, an association of more than 8,000 professionals from 1,300 chambers of commerce, including 93 of the top 100 U.S. metro areas.

The Chamber of the Year award recognizes the leadership role chambers have in their communities. Those recognized have demonstrated organizational strength and made an impact on key community priorities, such as education, transportation, business development and quality of life.

Qualifying for Chamber of the Year is a rigorous process. Chambers compete based on meeting key performance criteria on the ACCE Annual Operations Survey and must meet at least three of five key performance areas, including net revenue and assets, membership account retention, and membership dollar retention.

Qualifying chambers enter the competition with a written application addressing all aspects of organizational operation and programmatic work. Applications are scored by peer chamber executives to determine finalists. Winners are selected from among finalists based on an in-person interview before a panel of experienced chamber professionals.

ACCE announced the 12 finalists for 2019 on May 7.

The Effingham County Chamber has qualified in Category 1 along with Murray-Calloway Chamber of Commerce in Murray, Kentucky and the Wooster Area Chamber of Commerce in Wooster, Ohio.

“Qualifying for this award is due to the dedication and work of our Board of Directors, volunteer teams and Chamber professional staff to make sure the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce meets the needs of our membership as well as building and strengthening relationships that stimulate the regional economy. We are honored to be among this prestigious group of chambers and look forward to the next step in the selection process,” said Norma Lansing, Chamber President & CEO.

Chamber of the Year winners will be announced July 15 at the 2019 ACCE Annual Convention in Long Beach, Calif.

#BestChamber Practices: Chamber newsletter: April NEWS from Mt. Zion Chamber President Wendy Kernan

I was sitting through a presentation at a recent conference I attended and the speaker said for
every minute an associate spends outside their circle of what they can control you lose $1 off
your bottom line. Think about that for a minute … that can add up to quite a bit in a month not
to mention year. So, what happens when an associate does focus on the uncontrollable? They
begin to blame others and the company, they get frustrated, production/sales slow and they
may leave your company. Hence, $$ off the bottom line not to mention who else they infected.
So, as a manager, leader, business owner the real question is how do I keep my associates not
only focused on the controllable but how can the associate dominate the controllable? What
does that associate’s Attitude, Passion, and Purpose look like?
At this point, you might and should be asking as their leader what can I do to get them to dominate?
Here are some ideas to help get you started.
• Have a session where your team lists everything that stands in their way, doesn’t matter
what it is, everything is game. From there take 2 sheets of paper one labelled controllable
and one uncontrollable. Start going through their list putting each item on one of the lists.
At the end, take the uncontrollable sheet, wad it up and throw it away. Tell your team we
are not going to worry about what we can control any more. Then spend some time or set
a follow up meeting to go through what was on the controllable list.
• Have your associates own their Why. Have each person consider why they do what they do
and what good comes from what they do. To help them, have them list their answer to “I
do what I do so that …...” 5 times with 5 different reasons right.
• Help your team master their thoughts and step on their “ANTs” (Automatic Negative
Thoughts). Have them think and answer how they can Catch their ANT (notice it), Address
it (Acknowledge it and then let it go) and Refocus themselves (what can they control). This
is great for a one on one session.
Hopefully, this helps you get started and check ourselves as well. What ANTs do we need to
stomp on to dominate our controllable and dominate our business?

“Life is simple. Everything happens for you, not to you. Everything happens at exactly the
right moment, neither too soon nor too late.” Byron Katie

Thank you for being a part of the Mt. Zion Chamber and allowing me to serve you.

Sincerely,
Your Chamber President

Wendy J Kernan

Lauren Petty to Serve as Emcee at the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce Regional 30 Under 40 Local Reporter Recognizes Young Leaders Making an Impact Hodgkins, Illinois - The West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WSCCI) is excited to announce that Lauren Petty, NBC5 reporter and local resident, will once again serve as emcee at the Regional 30 Under 40 celebration on May 16, 2019 at the Brookfield Zoo. This event started last year and was a “wild” success. We honor and recognize 30 individuals under the age of 40 who have passion for their company’s mission and culture, exhibit leadership qualities and demonstrate significant contributions to the region. Petty joined NBC5 News as a reporter in 2012, with previous news experience in Hartford, Connecticut, Champaign, Illinois and London. She grew up in Burr Ridge and went to Lyons Township High School. She holds a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University, and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “Our attendees loved Lauren Petty last year,” said WSCCI President & CEO Suzi Wirtz, IOM. “She was the perfect emcee, both entertaining and well-spoken. Lauren consistently lends a hand to businesses and local events to give back to the region and we’re grateful she is our emcee again this year. This important initiative serves to not only identify young leaders, but to engage them in their communities and the Chamber and keep them connected year after year. ” Last year’s winners have gone on to become WSCCI board members, committee members, village trustees, volunteers at local nonprofits and more. Mayor, Chamber Of Commerce Push For Rockford Casino

Mayor Tom McNamara will travel to Springfield this week to further the city’s push for a casino license.
McNamara, along with Rockford Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Einar Forsman, addressed media Monday to expound on a letter they penned that was published in the Chicago-Sun Times and Chicago Tribune. The letter congratulates the Mayor-Elect Lori Lightfoot on her recent win and offers support for Chicago’s efforts to obtain a license.
The chamber will also run print and digital ads in the Springfield Journal Register to urge Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the General Assembly to approve casino licenses in Chicago and Rockford.
“Now is the time to act for the city of Rockford to get a casino,” Mayor Tom McNamara said. “We’ve talked about this literally before I could drive. It’s been well over 20 years since our community has wanted and has been working towards a casino.”
McNamara said a casino in Rockford could mean 800 to 1,100 jobs and has the potential for the city to collect between This is $6 million to $8 million in revenue.
“We need the state legislature to act and bring the city of Rockford a casino,” McNamara said. “This is incredibly important to the city of Rockford. There’s always been a sense of urgency, but I believe that the sense of urgency has stepped up as we see Beloit moving further and further down the road to having their own casino. We have enough of the state of Illinois taxes leaving Illinois and going to other states like Wisconsin and Indiana. Now is the time to stop that flow of our money going outside of our state and keep it right here in the city of Rockford.”  Read more: Rock River Times
