Crowdfunding campaign launched for Janet Jopke Tennis Park in Bay City

$50,000 goal to win matching grant through MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places initiative

Bay City will soon have a new outdoor recreation facility through a crowdfunding campaign, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Bay Community Tennis Association announced today. The campaign is being offered through Michigan-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity.

If the campaign reaches its crowdfunding goal of $50,000 by June 3, 2019, the project will win a matching grant with funds made possible by MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places program. For project details and to donate, please visit: patronicity.com/bctennis.

“This tennis park and greenspace is creating new opportunities for engagement in the Bay City community,” said MEDC Senior Vice President of Community Development Katharine Czarnecki. “We are pleased to provide resources for this effort through our Public Spaces Community Places program.”

The Janet Jopke Tennis Park has been years in the making, born from a communal demand for usable tennis courts following the decay of decades-old courts. At one time there were nearly 50 tennis courts in Bay City – now very few are usable. This campaign will complete the park to include a greenspace, eight handicap accessible tennis courts, a building with a storage room and two ADA compliant restrooms, two parking lots, lots of shade trees and space for outdoor activities like yoga, dance and more. The tennis park’s facilities and accessibility will establish the space as a gathering area for public events, allowing the site to be used for far more than just tennis.

"The MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places program added legitimacy to our project through the professionalism it provided. In addition, it heightened awareness of our efforts by boosting local outreach,” said Joe Ricard, president of the Bay Community Tennis Association. “We wish we had been aware of the PSCP program years ago."

Public Spaces Community Places is a collaborative effort of the MEDC, the Michigan Municipal League, and Patronicity, in which local residents can use crowdfunding to be part of the development of strategic projects in their communities and be backed with a matching grant from MEDC. Communities, nonprofits and other business entities can apply at https://patronicity.com/puremichigan.

“Providing engaging and accessible parks is key to great placemaking,” said Dan Gilmartin, CEO and executive director of the Michigan Municipal League. “This multi-use tennis park will enhance the community’s options for recreation as well as public event space.”

The Public Spaces Community Places initiative started in 2014 with MEDC providing matched funding of up to $50,000 for community improvement projects throughout Michigan. As of April 2019, MEDC has provided $6,269,44 1in matching grants. Since the launch of the program, 203 projects have been successful in reaching their goal, with more than $7 million raised from 38,945 individual donors.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation is the state’s marketing arm and lead advocate for business development, job awareness and community development with the focus on growing Michigan’s economy. General Motors to add second shift and more than 400 hourly jobs in Bowling Green

General Motors announced Thursday they will be adding a second shift and more than 400 hourly jobs at its Bowling Green, Ky. assembly plant to support production of the Next Generation Corvette, which will be revealed on July 18.

“The Corvette’s iconic status owes so much to the men and women of Bowling Green, where it has been built exclusively for almost 40 years,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “This is the workforce that can deliver a next generation Corvette worthy of both its historic past and an equally exciting future, and today’s announcement gets us one step closer to its reveal on July 18.”

The new jobs will push the plant’s total employment beyond 1,300.

“What a great day for Kentucky. I often speak about how we are the engineering and manufacturing hub of America. Today, we’re wearing that title more boldly than ever,” Gov. Matt Bevin said. “These new workers, together the plant’s current employees, will not only build the iconic Corvette and carry forward the nearly 40-year marriage between Corvette and Kentucky, but will also be members of the team that launches the technical tour-de-force, eighth-generation car off the production line and onto the global stage. Our commonwealth is incredibly proud to be the home of the Corvette. We are grateful to Mary Barra and GM for the relationship we share, and for this strong vote of confidence in Kentucky’s future.”

Since 2011, GM has invested more than $900 million in Bowling Green. This includes investments towards a new body shop, increased engine capacity, new paint shop, a new Performance Build Center and additional plant upgrades.

“The General Motors Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green is a tremendous asset to the region,” said Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ron Bunch. “They are an integral part of our commonwealth’s thriving economy, we are excited about the job growth and look forward to their many more years of success in our community.” Read more: Lane Report

Indy Chamber reveals videos from city's Amazon HQ2 bid package

Indianapolis fell short in its bid to land Amazon's second headquarters, but the Amazon team apparently was impressed enough with the city’s HQ2 bid package that it was given to CEO Jeff Bezos to review personally.
That’s according to Indy Chamber President Michael Huber, whose group led the effort to put the proposal together on behalf of the central Indiana region in 2017.
Huber said his group has since learned from “multiple sources” that the local bid was “one of two that were personally handed to Jeff Bezos” by the Amazon team.
Huber shared that tidbit—along with video elements of the region’s Amazon bid—at the chamber’s “state of the region” event Wednesday. Information about financial incentives offered to the tech behemoth remain under wraps.
“We were in a sprint to try to put something together” for Amazon, Huber said of the fall of 2017, when Indianapolis joined more than 230 other cities or regions in applying to be the host site of the massive economic development project. Indianapolis was eventually named a top 20 finalist before northern Virginia and New York City won the bid. New York City was later dropped.
Huber said now that the process is over, the chamber is repurposing some of the materials it produced for Amazon to show other companies, and to use in general talent-attraction efforts.

The video elements were accessible to Amazon officials on a website built for the bid, as well as on an iPad that was sent to the officials in a custom leather box, which also contained summary information about the bid, according to chamber spokesman Joe Pellman. The Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance and the Center for Advanced Engineering and Research to Join Together to Promote Technology Based Economic Development for the Lynchburg Region

The Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance (the Alliance) and the Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER) today announced an agreement to work together in a joint effort to develop a technology based economic development plan for the region. One of the goals in the LRBA’s 2019 strategic plan is to create and implement an innovation and tech based economic development plan. Research on successful technology clusters points to several elements that are critical to building a technology-based economy. These elements include sources of knowledge creation (R&D), spillovers of knowledge (technology commercialization), physical infrastructure such as broadband, a technically skilled workforce, access to capital and an entrepreneurial culture.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two organizations, the Alliance and the CAER will work together to jointly develop and implement a plan that leads to increased levels of innovation-based activities, an increase in the size and quality of the support network providing technical solutions for science, engineering and technology companies in the region and the state, and improvement in the quality of the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workforce in the region and Virginia.

“This joint effort will combine the technical resources of the CAER with the economic development resources of the Alliance to drive the economic growth of existing and prospective technology-based employers in the region and Virginia” states Megan Lucas, Chief Executive Officer of the Alliance. “This plan supports the Alliance’s business expansion, retention and new job creation initiatives while connecting people and businesses. Growing and sustaining a dynamic regional economy is at our core.” she added.

The Agreement includes a more detailed statement of work that addresses not only the development of the work plan, but also specific projects and programs needed to support this plan, fostering innovative partnerships and relationships in the region and the Commonwealth among public institutions of higher education, private companies, federal laboratories, and not-for-profit organizations, and assisting the Commonwealth’s Economic Development programs to bring science, engineering and technology businesses into the Lynchburg region.

Bill Guzek, President of the CAER board states that “we are excited to team with the Alliance as part of this agreement. We believe together we can enhance the value of both organizations for supporting technology growth in this region.”

“The idea of building out initiatives that lead to increased innovation such as new product development, technology commercialization, technology transfer, technology business start-ups and growth, along with the supporting applied research and development is exciting” added Bob Bailey, Executive Director of the CAER. “The potential for this region has always been high.”
