Chamber delight: Safety group tabs Waterloo as Illinois’ safest
A metro-east community has been named the safest city in Illinois by the National Council for Home Safety and Security.
The organization deemed the Monroe County town of Waterloo as the Land of Lincoln’s safest place. Waterloo, a community of 10,224 people, had just one violent crime and 29 property crimes reported in the latest group of FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics. The council said it reviewed the most recent FBI statistics along with population data and internal research to make its determinations.
Also making the list at No. 11 was Mascoutah. Other southern Illinois towns among the top 50 were Pinckneyville (No. 22) and Greenville (No. 32).

Chamber initiative: Young professionals to showcase city of Portage next week
Portage is about to find out what happens when a group of young professionals get together in an effort to showcase their city.
“Launch Portage” beginning Tuesday will offer a week of community events as part of Young Professionals Week (YPWeek) Wisconsin, a statewide initiative. Launch Portage, recently created by the Portage Area Chamber of Commerce, currently involves 10 young professionals from the city whose ultimate goal is to “create a culture of community involvement in Portage,” the Chamber’s executive director, Marianne Hanson, said.
The kick-off event, “Blitz the VFW,” will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Portage Veterans of Foreign Wars and will feature Portage native Jamie Baerstch, the first female brewmaster in Wisconsin, who will speak about the path she took to her profession. Attendees can sample three different beers Baerstch has developed at Wisconsin Dells Brewing Company. Tickets to the event are $15, available in the Chamber office or at the door on the day of the event.
“Blitz” will also feature food samples from local businesses, prizes and live music.
The second event is a community cleanup project at Sunset Park and the boat launch area on the Wisconsin River, which will take place at 5 p.m. Wednesday. People of all ages are encouraged to help clean up the area. Daily Register
Chamber to bring national pitch program for entrepreneurs to Indy
The Indy Chamber is bringing a national program for entrepreneurs to Indianapolis, featuring weekly events with elements of pitch contests that the group hopes will be a forum for small business owners of different stripes to share stories and collaborate.
The program is called 1 Million Cups. It was started by the Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City in 2012 but is now in more than 100 cities. The Indianapolis chapter, coordinated by the Chamber, will debut Wednesday morning at The Speak Easy south of Broad Ripple at 5255 Winthrop Ave.
Two companies—graphic T-shirt operation Brand of Sisters Society and water-testing startup 120WaterAudit—will be pitching at the hour-long event.
The Indy area plays host to a handful of regular pitch events, including Verge and PitchFeast, in which entrepreneurs float their business ideas and field questions. Chamber officials expect to see some pitcher overlap with those events, but 1 Million Cups will offer a slightly different experience: It's free, it's open to firms of all phases of development, and the purpose goes beyond simply pitching one's company.
"It's not competitive," said Susanna Taft, economic development program coordinator for the Chamber, who's overseeing the program. "It's supportive and inclusive and our focus is on education. It's a time when entrepreneurs can be really candid and get up there and say, 'This is what I'm struggling with.'" Read more : Indianapolis Business Journal

Harlan County Chamber of Commerce talks tourism
The Harlan County Chamber of Commerce heard from the executive director of the Bell County Historical Society, who spoke to the group about a variety of topics during a meeting on Wednesday.
Chamber President Flora Asher turned the floor over to Bell County Historical Society Executive Director William Tribell shortly after calling the meeting to order.
Tribell stressed the importance of working together with other cities and counties in the area.
"I’m in Bell County, Harlan County is my neighbor and across the way in Tennessee, Cumberland Gap and Harrogate, we all share history,” Tribell said.
He explained The Cumberland Gap Regional Tourism Association links all these places together to pursue a common goal.
“We have representation in 10 counties in three states,” Tribell said. “I think we all share that idea.”
Tribell said there has not been enough collaboration in the past.
“We share these borders, we share this traffic…highways pass through these communities and we’re not losing money to point down the road,” Tribell said. “If somebody comes to my area researching coal mines…I share with them what I can, and I tell them to come down here and visit the Coal Museum.”
Tribell also talked about how adventure tourism is impacting the region.
“The new thing is adventure tourism, bringing people into our communities to enjoy what we have around us,” he said. Read more: Harlan Daily Enterprise
