Virginia Peninsula Chamber Partnership: The 2017 Youth Career Expo (YCE)
The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, the Peninsula Council for Workforce Development, and the Greater Virginia Peninsula School Divisions* work together to produce the Youth Career Expo (YCE). It is our belief that by creating career ready graduates, we are paving the way for our youth to contribute to the economic sustainability of our region. The goal of the Expo is to educate students about the variety of career opportunities in the region and the skills needed to acquire those jobs.
If you are a business owner, you understand the need to plan ahead, and to compete for the future workforce. The Youth Career Expo is a great opportunity for businesses, like yours, to connect with the future workforce and to encourage them now, to acquire the skills they will need to be successful in your industry, later.
Working with high school students nearing graduation provides you an opportunity to help sustain future economic stability, while giving students the chance to explore career choices available in our region.

Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber sees great things in 2017
There are many things to look back upon and be thankful for alongside the many things to look forward to in the eyes of Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jeff Emsweller.
2016 included many changes for the Chamber, including welcoming numerous new local businesses into the Chamber and relocating their offices to Greensburg City Hall.
Emsweller looked back on the move and its impact on the Chamber this year and moving forward.
“The Chamber relocated our office to Greensburg City Hall, which at one time was an elementary school,” Emsweller said. “We renovated one of the old classrooms, making it very modern and functional. We now have an extremely nice conference room, sponsored by Duke Energy, and this conference room allows us to hold meetings on site as well as a great facility for training purposes. It includes a 60-inch TV which can be used for PowerPoint presentations or accessing the Internet for training modules. This room is available to our members at no charge and with us being in City Hall, there is plenty of parking and this building is extremely nice and welcoming.”
Emsweller says the move this year is expected to be the last for the Chamber for the foreseeable future.
“The move to City Hall also gives the Chamber what is expected to be a long-term location,” Emsweller said. “The Chamber has had to move so many times over the past couple of decades that we still have people thinking we are on Lincoln Street, which was way back in the early 2000s.” Read more: Greensburg Daily News

Arias recognized as one of the top CEO’s in Mississippi for her work for Picayune
Nuria Arias, executive director of the Greater Picayune Area Chamber of Commerce, was recognized by the Mississippi Business Journal as one of the 2017 Top CEOs in Mississippi for her contributions to the city of Picayune.
The Mississippi Business Journal recognizes leaders around the state each year. These people demonstrate excellence amid top executives in their field and achieve growth as well as success for their companies while making a profound impact in their community, the Mississippi Business Journal states.
“In the past, I have received other awards, but this one means a lot,” Arias said. “I have done lots of things in Louisiana and other places while working former jobs, but not for the beautiful city of Picayune, so being recognized for the work I do for the city I live in is really special.”
Arias has lived in Picayune with her husband Oscar Arias and two daughters—Marycruz and Camila—since 2002 and is proud to call Picayune home, she said.
Nuria Arias said she sees this recognition as an extension of the support, work and leadership of her past and current Board of Directors and is hopeful that the award will highlight the caliber of professionals Picayune possesses.
“It feels good knowing I am making a difference in the city I live in. I don’t see winning this award as a professional achievement, but more as a personal achievement because I am helping out my community and doing what I love,” she said.
Nuria Arias said her goal for 2017 as executive director of the Chamber is to work with city, community and business leaders in an effort to help Picayune grow.
Recipients will be honored on Thursday January 26, 2017 at The Old Capitol Hill Inn in Jackson from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. Read more: Picayune Item

Kyndle legislative preview breakfast set for Jan. 9
As a Kentucky General Assembly prepares to meet, Kyndle's area legislators will share their views and expectations at the Kyndle 2017 Legislative Preview Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 9.
For the first time in Kentucky’s 225-year history, Republicans control both the state House of Representatives and Senate. Also on the horizon are tax, public pension and criminal justice reform, among other initiatives.
All of the legislators who represent portions of the four Kyndle counties — Henderson, McLean, Union and Webster — have been invited to speak at the breakfast. They include state Sens. Dorsey Ridley and Joe Bowen as well as state Reps. Robby Mills, Suzanne Miles and Jim Gooch.
The Kyndle breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, in the Big Rivers Electric Corp. Training Center, located adjacent to the Big Rivers parking lot at Third and Main streets. Comcast completes latest expansion of fiber network in southeast Michigan
Comcast Business has completed a two-year, $8.3 million expansion of its fiber-based network in Michigan that adds more than 70 miles of fiber to 1,260 buildings housing 2,260 business tenants across southeast Michigan (including Midtown Detroit), Grand Rapids and Lansing. This supplemental network investment complements the company’s average $240 million capital expenditure spent per year in Michigan over the past three years.
Capable of delivering speeds up to 100 gigabits-per-second (Gbps), this network build-out provides more businesses with access to a comprehensive portfolio of high-performance Ethernet, Internet and advanced voice solutions that will help meet the day-to-day demands of organizations requiring large amounts of bandwidth, looking to link multiple sites or branch locations or planning to connect their offices to a third-party data center.
“These network investments will provide a great business advantage to companies of all sizes and industries,” said Tim Collins, senior vice president of Comcast in Michigan. “Our customers’ bandwidth needs typically double every three years. By putting fiber in the ground now, we’ll be ready to meet their growing demands for speed and bandwidth, particularly as more customers move to cloud-based applications and require the fast download and upload speeds that we provide.”
“Investments, like Comcast Business’ fiber build, are good for Michigan’s overall economic development,” said Rich Studley, president and CEO, Michigan Chamber of Commerce. “Knowing office space is already primed for high-speed broadband service is helping local municipalities attract new businesses to their communities.” Read more: Hometown Life
