Chamber Executive Ongoing Education: Kyle Sexton: REMEMBERSHIP - New Strategies for Remarkable Membership Organizations

In the five years since first publishing REMEMBERSHIP, I've been working with chambers and associations across North America, implementing effective new tools and strategies that help boards and executives make better decisions about their future.

The second edition is shipping now. The ideas in this book are important for membership organizations, membership development professionals, and their board members. The tools I've added in this edition are critical to the strategic direction of your team.

In 2014, I launched a new tool, and it's big: six feet by four feet, to be exact. It's a giant interactive canvas to help you understand your organization better. It's a result of all the membership workshops I've done at annual board retreats. I can't wait to share it with you.

Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce priority: 'Workplace ready' designation sought for Sangamon County

A newly created workforce development program for Sangamon County aims to have 4,000 workers -- primarily students and the unemployed -- certified as "workplace ready" by the end of 2017.
The county would be among the first in Illinois certified through the ACT Work Ready Communities program, which certifies students and workers as ready for a job in areas of applied math, locating information and reading. Approximately 3,100 have been certified since testing began in the summer of 2015 at local high schools and Lincoln Land Community College, said Sarah Graham, director of workforce development at The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce.
Nearly 30 employers are participating. The goal is another 100 in 2017.
"Individuals take this test to certify their readiness for the workplace," said Graham. "High school students are the emerging employees. Then there are unemployed individuals, and there are current workers."
ACT developed the program in the 1980s as part of the company's college- and career-readiness testing for high school students, said Graham. Individuals who successfully complete the test receive a bronze, silver, gold or platinum "National Career Readiness Certificate" that can be shared with potential employers. The certificate, said Graham, is intended to supplement high school and college studies.
The emphasis, Graham added, is on the unemployed for the remainder of the year. There is a cost for taking the test, though she said local educational institutions work with students. Tests are customized to specific fields, from accounting to auto mechanics.
"It's going to let an individual know whether they need to do some work, whether it's educationally, whether it's applied math skills or critical thinking skills," said Graham. State-Journal Register

Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce Begins Search for its New Director

The Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce (GBCC) is starting its search for a new director, and a job description of the full-time position has been posted online, according to interim director Aimee Thurner.
The description for the position was drafted in late December, and a director could be in place ahead of the chamber’s annual banquet on March 7. The new director would be responsible for handling membership recruitment, all chamber programming and hiring individuals for future chamber positions. The new director also would manage the chamber’s existing member core of 375 businesses.
“It’s the first puzzle piece before everything else can fall into place for the chamber,” Thurner said. “It will be great to build our staff in the upcoming year.”
The director search comes amid the chamber preparing to announce its new board of directors president, Mary Marino of Beloit Health System, next month.
The job description states the new director must manage the chamber’s $200,000 annual budget, while organizing workshops to benefit chamber members. The new leader would need to implement a plan for future event programming, Thurner said.
Thurner, who has worked with the chamber for over 13 years, said she will stay on after a new director is hired. Read more: Beloit Daily News

Chamber interest: Brookhaven could be called Car Seekers Paradise

Car buyers looking for a bang for their buck find all roads lead to Brookhaven.
Area auto dealers say it’s the great location and their customer service that brings shoppers to Lincoln County for vehicle purchases. And those shoppers already living here don’t have to travel far for good deals.
“People from Brookhaven and surrounding areas come here for the wide selection available and lack of franchises in neighboring counties and towns,” said Lavelle Sullivan of Sullivan Ford.
Brookhaven, with a total population of about 12,500 people, is home to more than a dozen auto sellers, with six dealerships specializing in the sale of new vehicles. They’re mostly scattered along Brookway Boulevard and Hwy. 51, and all near I-55, which makes it convenient for shoppers traveling from outside the area.
Garrick Combs, executive director of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, remembers car shopping with his mom and dad when he was younger.
“Growing up in western Franklin County as a child, my parents drove to Brookhaven to buy all of their vehicles. The rest of my family and friends did the same,” he said.
It seems like that’s the trend.

Some of those profits go back into the facilities to benefit the customers and into the community that directly supports them. Read more: Daily Leader
