Indiana Chamber to push for expanded civil rights law
The Indiana Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors announced Thursday that its board of directors has voted "overwhelmingly" to support expanding the state’s civil rights law to include protection for sexual orientation and gender identity.
The board is comprised of more than 100 business executives and civic leaders from throughout the state.
“We believe this expansion is a necessary action for the General Assembly to take,” Indiana Chamber President and CEO Kevin Brinegar said in a written statement. “After the negative perception of our state generated by the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in the spring, we need to get this right in order to secure the reputation of Indiana as a hospitable and welcoming place."
The vote took place at the group's annual fall meeting, where the group establishes public policy positions it will support during the upcoming General Assembly.
"The time has come for Indiana to expand protections against potential discrimination," Brinegar said. "This action will increase the state’s future business competitiveness in the recruitment, attraction and retention of talent, as well as enhance respect for all employers and employees." MMAC initiative: It's time for a lakefront cultural campus - Opinion
If we could snap our fingers and create a single destination for many of Milwaukee's major cultural and educational attractions, would we? Imagine having the ability to move freely by foot among a natural history museum, a children's museum, a science and technology center and an art museum on Milwaukee's lakefront.
It will take more than a snap of our fingers, but after more than $200 million in mainly private investment at the Milwaukee Art Museum and Discovery World, critical pieces are in place to breathe life into such a campus, and our community should engage in meaningful dialogue about the resources it would take and the work that can be done to establish a destination that will provide important access to cultural assets and benefit the region's kids and families for generations to come.
The Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce recently announced its intention to push for a dedicated funding source for local cultural institutions. At this stage, it has pinpointed only the county-funded institutions such as the Milwaukee County Zoo, the Milwaukee Public Museum and the Milwaukee Art Museum for these resources. Business Ledger expo serves up suburban hospitality to record crowd
A record crowd of business people got a taste of the Northwest suburbs' hospitality industry Thursday during the Daily Herald Business Ledger Hospitality Expo -- Chicago Northwest.
More than 900 people wandered the Stonegate Banquet and Conference Centre in Hoffman Estates to check out more than 70 vendors showing off their specialties. Businesses from hotels and meeting sites to restaurants and caterers, as well entertainers such as magicians and casino night operators, were represented.
The event drew the largest crowd in the history of the Business Ledger's annual event, according to Chris Craven, advertising team leader and coordinator of the Business Ledger's three yearly Hospitality Expos.
"It really shows the need for events like these that bring people from the industry together to network and to generate new business," Craven said.
For many of the vendors, the event was not only a way to drum up business but also to network with others in the industry in a relaxed format. Jasmine Carlson and Lauren Rullo of Weber Grill Restaurant in Schaumburg noted the atmosphere at the Thursday event was different from other events they've attended. Read more: Daily Herald

Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce working to fill jobs in South Central Kentucky
In 2013, the Bowling Green Area Chamber released the Urgent Call to Action Study which noted that in manufacturing alone, South Central Kentucky will have 4,500 open positions by 2016, representing $3 billion in gross domestic product in the 10 county South Central Kentucky region. The job openings will double to 9,000 by 2020. At the same time, Bowling Green's economy continues to grow with 14 announcements in 2015 alone, bringing a total capital investment of $824,257,235 and the creation of 813 new jobs. In order to support that growth, South Central Kentucky must have a strong talent pipeline.
In response, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce is implementing several initiatives to ensure that pipeline is in place for our businesses. From a $1.4 million private sector investment for The Leader in Me in our schools to the development of career academies in our high schools to the development of a Preferred Employer Network that ensures companies receive candidates that possess desired credentials, the Chamber offers a full slate of solutions to ensure that our companies have thetalent they need.
The Chamber is also increasing outreach outside our region to attract the highest quality candidates for our businesses. Thanks to the efforts of Speaker Pro Tem Jody Richards, the Chamber partnered with the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program (EKCEP) earlier this fall to bring South Central Kentucky businesses to their 2nd Annual Mega Job Fair for workers affected by the recent downturn in the coal economy - a partnership that has already proven to be successful.
